Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’s Move!’ campaign was supposed to help solve the issue of childhood obesity, but it actually made it worse due to misleading evidence. She measured that at the time of her election about 40% of the school age children were either overweight or obese at the time. The actual percentage was closer to 20%. By doing incorrect calculations, she provoked a great deal of unnecessary excitement. She has modified the lunches into much less appealing versions of the school food, however, by doing so, she has not only caused many students to not eat their lunches, instead they devour an excessive amount of the unhealthy options that are still allowed in the schools today. The campaign needs to be stopped; by taking away the food that …show more content…
Obama conducted early in her tyrannus reign in the school lunch program was flawed. She went by the ‘fact’ that everyone should be within 45%-55% of their age’s weight average to be considered healthy, no matter how tall you are. If somebody is in the 20% for height and 55% for weight, that person should be considered overweight. If someone is in the 70% for height and 70% for weight, Mrs. Obama sees that as overweight, however, most doctors would see that this person is the perfect weight in relation to their height. Michelle Obama said that 40% of our school children were overweight, although this was extremely wrong according to doctors. As stated by to the majority of doctors; percent of children overweight was only around 20%. Now, in the year 2014, the percent of children overweight has gone up to 31.8%. That means that since her health campaign began, the overweight and obese rates have gone up a shocking 11.8%. This in itself should be reason enough to say that this movement has done more harm than it has done good. The bill that was passed to help get these projects and movements in action should be removed from the laws of the United States. If we can get these bills removed, kids would be more likely to eat the school lunches instead of unhealthy
This documentary takes a look at how our school’s lunch programs and government play a role in the spread of obesity across the nation. The film really attempts to drive home the idea that our children are being immorally brainwashed into wanting unhealthy foods. At some points of the film, it appears that the director uses big companies and school lunches as a scapegoat for our nations crisis. It is a valid point that our nation’s children are being

Childhood obesity proves to still be on the rise in our schools and not enough is being done to stop it. Despite the many reforms
As an average American student walks down the lunch line they might see whole-grain bread or noodles being tossed on their plate. “Who would want to eat this?” A common question asked by the student when they encounter the reduced calorie meal. Believe it or not, the changes, no matter how unappetizing they may be, were made in interest of the health children across the nation. After her husband was elected President of the United States, Michelle Obama took initiative of her own and started a campaign called “Let’s Move!” The campaign was developed to put a stop to childhood obesity through exercise and nutrition. Besides endorsing exercise to the children of America through commercials and advertisements, this movement included new guidelines that schools across the nation had to follow. This caused controversy between the students and schools and the government that will be covered throughout the essay. This paper is about Michelle Obama’s school lunch guidelines and how they are affecting schools and students across the nation.
Palin criticized the proposed limited on junk food in schools in Pennsylvania, which was suppose to help encourage parents to give their children healthy snacks. The governments proposal was poorly prepared based on the fact that private schools would not even be affected. I believe Warner uses this story of Palin because it grabs attention of the audience and emphasizes that the government has lack of knowledge of the obesity problem. In Warner’s discussion of the governments ideas of removing junk food, one controversial issue has been that the government lacks knowledge. On one hand, Warner argues Palin’s twitter account, uses uneducated language. On the other hand, she contends it should be an individual’s right to eat what they choose. Others even maintain that the government should do something about this unhealthy American lifestyle. My own view is that taking away cookies is wrong because Americans will continue to eat junk food at their own will. When the school doesn’t provide them, they can still get it elsewhere. As much as the government continues to stress eating healthy, people will still continue to make their own choices. Personal choices will always come first. I believe the government has the right to take responsibility to educate people about eating habits but that should be it. Parents should step up and change there attitudes as much as they can. This society relies on easy and fast meals. Ultimately, what is at stake is health and people must change attitudes towards fast food for healthy lifestyles to improve. It 'll take time and patience to get all Americans to change attitudes to living a some what healthy
Phillis Wheatley and Elizabeth Freeman’s actions influenced the American Revolution. Wheatley through her literature, which included poems sent to George Washington and a poem written in regards to King George the third, was able to set an example of how African Americans are intelligent and equal human beings of the American colonies. Elizabeth Wheatley went against all odds to obtain her freedom by suing her slave owner and winning the case in court. Phillis Wheatley and Elizabeth Freeman’s actions during the American Revolution affected what liberty rights they would obtain years after the American Revolution ended.
I read a statement not too many years ago “According to the White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity “today’s generation of America children will live sicker, grow fatter, and die younger” (2010). To stop and think about what that really says is beyond disconcert. Two years later, this evidence showing little to nothing has improved, is crippling.
“For me, education was power.” Michelle Obama has always been a major advocate for many different causes, such as education, health, and support for military families. Her work to make people’s lives better has influenced many people to join the causes and have healthier lifestyles. Becoming First Lady gave her a large influence and began her support of many causes, which has made her one of the most influential people of this century.
Obesity in children is a growing crisis in our society. It has become an alarming concern for both communities and health care organizations. There are a number of ways to improve eating habits and encourage healthier choices. Making healthier foods accessible in groceries stores is one example. Our First Lady, Michelle Obama used the following quote during her speech in Chicago to call attention to the lack of healthy food stores in some communities in Chicago. She proclaims that it is a community matter and every one must be involve to make changes. Without change in the community individuals will not have opportunities to make healthier food choice .
Although there is a risk of upsetting people who are not worried about the health and wellbeing of today’s youth with selfish reasoning for wanting to keep junk food, ridding schools of junk foods will prove itself to be very beneficial. Children can choose healthier options without being ridiculed by others, wondering if what they are eating is good for them, and/or worrying about negative effects. One’s health cannot be overlooked as it is the livelihood of that person and much more. It is not a subject that can be taken lightly. Action to change the current conditions of America’s population’s
According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years,” meaning that America’s children need to start eating healthier, including healthier school lunches. The National School Lunch Act is a fairly recent addition to American society. For, as the world waged war a second time, the United States began to worry about the strength and health of the country’s soldiers. However, in the beginning, selling excess agricultural goods was more important than building a healthy, well-balanced meal for students. Unfortunately, many children coming from poorer families could not afford well-balanced school lunches, so in order to compensate, the School Lunch Program changed its focus to help these students. This program, however, decreased schools’ lunch budgets, and schools had a hard time keeping up with the amount of free meals they had to provide, so they came up with some extra ways to increase revenue. However, in a small town in Massachusetts, one chef makes a difference in the health of the school lunch students eat each day, and proves that hiring a trained chef to cook real, healthy meals can increase profit. Unfortunately, that is not the case in most schools across the nation. The quality of health of the food being served in school lunches is extremely poor and was allowed to decline even more with a new set of rule changes. However, there are some improvements currently being made to increase the quality of health of the food being served to students, including teaching them all about food and its nutritional information, both good and bad. In order for students to eat healthier lunches at school, the USDA needs to implement healthier ...
Childhood obesity in the United States has become a rather large issue. Michelle Obama, the wife of President Barack Obama, has realized this issue, and realizes the dire need to address childhood obesity. Obama is extremely passionate on the eradication of the issue, and whilst speaking radiates a sense of importance connected to the problematic topic. During the Conference of Mayors, First Lady Michelle Obama relates to the general public and refers to countless mayors and high-ranking officials in order to emphasize the validity of the rapidly expanding problem of childhood obesity. During her speech, Michelle Obama uses numerous ethical and emotional appeals to relate herself to the everyday citizens of America, giving the audience a better
“"Fed Up" also decries government policies for not tackling the problem, and in some ways making it worse. First lady Michelle Obama -- touting her "Let's Move"program to combat childhood obesity -- is shown standing with representatives of food corporations that, in response to the Obama administration's criticisms, announced in
The United States needs to do something to change the amount of childhood obesity in the nation. If the government requires children to take classes that require physical activity, abolishes school vending machines, and teaches children about healthy eating, then the amount of children that are obese in the United States will decrease significantly. Obesity is defined as the increase of body fat over time to the point where it can impact health in a negative manner and decrease life expectancy. Since the 1980’s, obesity has increased dramatically in the United States. Children have been greatly impacted in the increase of obesity. This is a major problem as someday these obese children could possibly turn into obese adults. If the population of obese adults and children keeps increasing, than not only will our country have a lot of severely unhealthy people but the cost of health care will increase dramatically.
...less frequently, their desire and addiction to these unhealthy foods will be reduced. Advertising and media should instead be used to promote healthy eating and lifestyle habits such as Michelle Obama’s Lets move! campaign. This initiative works at taking steps to encourage children to form healthy habits. Michelle Obama created the “MyPlate” icon to educate and help parents make better lifestyle decisions for their kids. Since the launching, (Letsmove.gov) Another one of her programs is called Society would be much healthier if advertisements now used to endorse the fast or processed food industry were instead used to promote improved health choices for audiences. The ultimate goal of society should be to develop and encourage healthy eating habits from a young age by being mindful of what one buys and eats, thus building a healthy and stable relationship with food
