African American Women African American women had a great contribution to the American Revolution even though they were still enslaved after America’s Independence from the British. Through literature and bravery African American Women were able to make a difference in their life. These actions of African American women brought them the freedom they always deserved by not having to be anyone’s slave anymore. During the American Revolution Phillis Wheatley and Elizabeth Freeman’s actions affected what rights they would obtain after the revolution. Phillis Wheatley affected the American Revolution through her literature. She was brought to Boston in 1761 as a slave and learned how to read in 1765. In 1765 she also published her first poem in a New England newspaper in 1765 when she was about twelve years old (Foner 235). Phillis Wheatley was able to show how blacks were truly American and were also intelligent. “My love of freedom,” wrote the black poet Phillis Wheatley in in 1783” (Foner 235). She talked about the freedom African Americans should have and how no one should ever have to be taken from their home land to be made a slave in a foreign land. She also wrote a political poem that was addressed to King George the third. “And may each clime with equal gladness see A monarch’s smile can set his subjects free! (Hoffman 351). Through her political poem, Phillis Wheatley, wanted the American colonies to understand they deserve freedom and should not have to obey King George the third. Then on October 26, 1775 Wheatley wrote a poem to President George Washington. In a part of the poem she expressed that Washington was a great leader and no one else could be compared to his greatness. “Proceed, great chief, with virtue on thy ... ... middle of paper ... ...ing their life” (Mumbett : Court Record). Betts’s bravery of suing her slave owner impacted the aftermath of the American Revolution because it showed that African American were to obtain their freedom if they kept fighting for their rights. Phillis Wheatley and Elizabeth Freeman’s actions both influenced the American Revolution. Wheatley through her literature, which included poems sent to George Washington and a poem written in regards to King George the third, was able to set an example of how African Americas are intelligent and equal human beings of the American colonies. Elizabeth Wheatley went against all odds to obtain her freedom by suing her slave owner and winning the case in court. Phillis Wheatley and Elizabeth Freeman’s actions during the American Revolution affected what liberty rights they would obtain years after the American Revolution ended.
