In the first film we watched “Fed Up” I did not really enjoy watching it. The film focuses on the causes of obesity in the U.S. It presents evidence showing that the large quantities of sugar in processed foods are an overlooked root of the problem of America. “Big Sugar” is looking at attempts to enact effective policies to address the issue. In choosing your food do you really want to consume all of this sugar.

May 2010 they would lower the calorie counts of their products by 1.5 trillion” (CBS 14). I got this source from CBS news over the “Fed Up” documentary. These efforts did not work that well when put into place, but I guess it is good to start somewhere so it is something to get started. This is big factor in choosing your food, the companies that made the calorie counts go down had to do it somehow. In fact, the companies injected chemicals into the food, so in choosing one’s food keep in mind the chemicals put into them. In the Ted Talk called “Teach Every Child About Food,” Jamie Oliver shares powerful stories from his anti-obesity project in West Virginia. Jamie makes his case for an all-out assault on our ignorance of food. People do not realize how much sugar they are eating and how bad it is for their body. Jamie does a really good job in showing us the shocking amount of sugar we consume. It is quite gross that Americans eat this much sugar, therefore it is definitely something to keep in mind when choosing your food. I really liked the Ted Talk a lot better than the film Fed Up. The Ted talk used a lot more real life situations like the wheelbarrow full of sugar cubes and I felt like I could actually relate to it. On the other hand, Fed Up was just a bunch of people sobbing about their obese lives. Another reason I liked the Ted Talk more is because it was short, sweet, and to the point. The Ted Talk only took like one class period and it kept me drawn in the whole time. Fed Up took like four class periods and it was very boring and annoying to watch. These videos good and bad still make me want to stop and think about what I am eating before I eat it.
The United States of America has long been considered a “big nation”, whether is has the biggest cities, houses, and on a negative note, biggest people. In 2003, Morgan Spurlock, a healthy-bodied film director, set on a quest to show America the detrimental effects of the fast food industry and raise awareness on the controversial issue. He produced the documentary “Supersize Me”, where McDonald’s meals were consumed for every meal of the day for thirty days. His film was released to movie theatres so that people could understand the devastating effects of McDonald’s on his body in a very short time span. At the end of his experiment, Morgan gained twenty-five pounds, developed a thirteen percent body mass increase, cholesterol skyrocketed immensely, and fat accumulation in his liver rose to. He became depressed and he only felt happy and in no pain when he was eating the fast food. By using ethos, logos, and pathos, “Supersize Me” became one of the most watched documentaries in the United States. Without these appeals, this documentary would not have developed the effect that it did.
The film Fed Up uses its platform to emphasize the issues in the American diet and reason for the change in health. Lobbying efforts seem to be solely to blame, because it is the advertisement that links the new change in poor diet. Soechtig utilizes a number of rhetorical appeals to drive her argument; a few include factual data and statistics, informed opinions, and comparisons. The exigence for the film is the increased amount of issues and expected issues to come for American’s if our normal diet continues. We have become so accustomed to fast food and easy, unhealthy, diet choices that diseases like diabetes has become very prevalent and on the rise. One in every three Americans born after 2000 will contract early onset diabetes. In the film “Food Inc.” takes a look into a typical grocery store and reveals the illusion of variety. Most of the food in the industry leads back to corn. High fructose corn syrup, a sweetener made from corn starch, is found in many of the foods and beverages that we consume. Fed Up (2014), directed by Stephanie Soechtig and narrated by Katie Couric, attempts to tackle to feat of exposing the big secret about why America is so overweight. The film opens with disturbing images and clips of obese people and unhealthy habits in action. The film really focuses on advertisement as a main culprit for childhood and adult obesity. Fed Up attempts to appeal to adults and young adults in order to educate them on the obesity epidemic. More specifically, it attempts to reveal the improbable cause for our weight problem. Sugar.
The consequences of obesity are clear: various metabolic problems, high cholesterol, insulin resistance and high blood pressure. Risk of heart diseases more as we gain more fat. Sleep apnea can also result, as well as joint problems. Obesity is not only a result of lack of exercise, but of the kind of food people consume. The film “Fed Up” does not address whether “real food” as solution to this endemic is feasible, assumes that people have the time, money and energy to control their health by buying, preparing and cooking real food, and leaves the audience wondering whether their laziness that prevents them from investing time, energy and money to cook and consume slow food at home. In the documentary “Fed Up,” sugar is responsible for Americas rising obesity rate, which is happening even with the great stress that is set on exercise and portion control for those who are overweight. Fed Up is a film directed by Stephanie Soechtig, with Executive Producers Katie Couric and Laurie David. The filmmaker’s intent is mainly to inform people of the dangers of too much sugar, but it also talks about the fat’s in our diets and the food corporation shadiness. The filmmaker wants to educate the country on the effects of a poor diet and to open eyes to the obesity catastrophe in the United States. The main debate used is that sugar is the direct matter of obesity. Overall, I don’t believe the filmmaker’s debate was successful.

With constant life struggles, fast food readily available, and little time for preparation, citizens of the United States are not paying attention to what they’re putting in their child’s mouths. The state of Mississippi has developed the highest percentages of childhood obesity in the United States. Although this percentage has decreased in recent years, the numbers are still astounding. In a society that is facing numerous problems, such as economic devastation, one major problem is often disregarded, growing obesity. As the American society keeps growing, so does growth of the fast food industry and the epidemic of obesity. In order to further investigate the main cause of obesity, Morgan Spurlock, the film director and main character, decides to criticize the fast food industry for its connection with obesity in America. In his documentary Spurlock performs a radical experiment that drives him to eat only from McDonald's and order a super-sized meal whenever he is asked. By including visual and textual techniques, rhetorical appeals, and argumentative evidences, Morgan Spurlock was able to help viewers know the risks of fast food and how it has caused America to be the world's “fattest country”.
As obesity and medical problems due to diet become a larger issue within society, it is imperative to educate humans on the importance of maintaining a healthy diet. This is exactly what Hungry for Change does. One of the key points made in the documentary is that humans no longer eat a natural diet like their ancestors did; when humans first began to inhabit the Earth they lived off a diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, and meats. During these periods famine and disease was rampant, so humans adapted to store nutrition more productively. Now that humans live in a more developed society, they have a (practically) unlimited supply of food. However, much of this food is processed and manipulated to have a better flavour and a longer shelf life, and though this sounds like a positive situation, it has become a huge problem. According to best-selling women’s health author Dr. Christine Northrup, “We’ve lived on Earth for a millennium where there was a food shortage. Babies is a documentary that centers around four diverse infants throughout their first year on Earth. These four babies are born in four different areas of the world. The film demonstrates how people from different parts of the world can grow up completely different than other parts, while still sharing many similarities. Ponijao is an African baby who is born in Opuwo, Namibia. Mari is a young Japanese girl who was born in Tokyo, Japan. Bayar is a baby who was born in Bayanchandmani, Mongolia. The fourth baby’s name is Hattie, born in San Francisco, California. While viewing the documentary, many theories and concepts in psychology are portrayed.
I read a statement not too many years ago “According to the White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity “today’s generation of America children will live sicker, grow fatter, and die younger” (2010). To stop and think about what that really says is beyond disconcert. Two years later, this evidence showing little to nothing has improved, is crippling.

Obesity in children is a growing crisis in our society. It has become an alarming concern for both communities and health care organizations. There are a number of ways to improve eating habits and encourage healthier choices. Making healthier foods accessible in groceries stores is one example. Our First Lady, Michelle Obama used the following quote during her speech in Chicago to call attention to the lack of healthy food stores in some communities in Chicago. She proclaims that it is a community matter and every one must be involve to make changes. Without change in the community individuals will not have opportunities to make healthier food choice .
With this concept in mind, I am going to analyze the Guardian online 2012 article “Why our food is making us fat,” by Jacques Peretti. The article mainly speaks about the rapid rise in obesity and the main contributor to it, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). The article also points out some of the economic and political influences behind HFCS. HFCS is used for almost every food product in the food industry. However, if we look at HFCS from a limited point of view, we just see it as something present in our food and not the health factors behind it.
To start off this documentary, four volunteers that were concerned about their sugar intake and were living in Britain met up with the narrator. To begin, a display of food that the person had eaten in the last week was shown. After they went over when, where and why they might eat this, a platter containing their sugar intake was revealed. The numbers ranged from four to seven times the recommended 6 teaspoons! Because this is a very unhealthy amount to be consuming, the volunteers were challenged to eat no more than the recommended 6 teaspoons a day, basically cutting out theall sweets other than fruit.
