Rhetorical Analysis #1 The American diet is becoming extremely harmful to the health of especially children. The new generation has different trends in regard to health compared to those of perhaps their parents. In the documentary Fed Up, Soechtig uses data and statistics, as well as narratives of emotional events to highlight the long run issues with American’s poor diet and also to criticize the food industry. By doing this, the director hopes to spark a change in diet. Soechtig uses factual data and statistics to further prove the argument of the increasing rate in poor diet among most Americans. The data used puts into view of how large an issue American’s have on their hands. She provides an example of how much damage one drink can have on your body. She expresses that one soda increases the risk of obesity by 20% (Soechtig, 2014). By using this statistic, Soechtig demonstrates the impact sugar has on one’s health. The statistic challenges the people in the audience who believe the idea that “one won’t hurt.” The director is not criticizing those who drink soda, but does hope to encourage and persuade them to make a switch. The film Fed Up uses its platform to emphasize the issues in the American diet and reason for the change in health. Lobbying efforts seem to be solely to blame, because it is the advertisement that links the new change in poor diet. Soechtig utilizes a number of rhetorical appeals to drive her argument; a few include factual data and statistics, informed opinions, and comparisons. The exigence for the film is the increased amount of issues and expected issues to come for American’s if our normal diet continues. The director is attempting to persuade a healthy change in food consumption by explaining the issues with advertisement, health programs, and the food industry
