As an average American student walks down the lunch line they might see whole-grain bread or noodles being tossed on their plate. “Who would want to eat this?” A common question asked by the student when they encounter the reduced calorie meal. Believe it or not, the changes, no matter how unappetizing they may be, were made in interest of the health children across the nation. After her husband was elected President of the United States, Michelle Obama took initiative of her own and started a campaign called “Let’s Move!” The campaign was developed to put a stop to childhood obesity through exercise and nutrition. Besides endorsing exercise to the children of America through commercials and advertisements, this movement included new guidelines that schools across the nation had to follow. This caused controversy between the students and schools and the government that will be covered throughout the essay. This paper is about Michelle Obama’s school lunch guidelines and how they are affecting schools and students across the nation.
On January 18, 2012 the Obama administration announced a new set of changes to pile on top of the older rules that had already been set in action. Older constraints on the lunches had been put in earlier, but the new ones cut down the so deemed ‘unhealthy’ food even more and was replace with more ‘wholesome’ choices. The last set of rules supplemented more fruits and vegetables to the school meals and decreased the amount of fat and salt (Nixon, 1). Janet Poppendieck is a professor of sociology at Hunter College in New York, and additionally she is the author of several books including her most recent Free for All: Fixing School Food in America. This book centers on America’s recent interest in whether or not our school lunches are healthy. This issue has been put into the spotlight recently through shows such as Jamie Oliver’s School Food Revolution and in the news because recent changes in the Nation School Lunch Program’s dietary guidelines. Poppendieck’s book looks at the in depth reasons into why school lunches have turned into what they are today, what challenges need to be faced in order to fix school lunches, and ultimately how our the system should be fixed. She accomplishes this by interviewing her current college students about their previous school lunch experiences, working in a school cafeteria, interviewing current school employees, and looking at the history and policies of the National School Lunch Program.
Though proponents of this method argue that it has lowered meal debt and the amount of families failing to pay, Stacy Koltiska refutes this claim by saying: “[The ones making these policies] are suits at a board meeting… They are not the ones facing a child and looking them in the eye and taking their food away.” While it is irrefutable that debt in schools is a problem that must be tackled, it is not a justifiable excuse to take a child’s midday meal out of his or her hands and throw it into a trash can because his or her parents can not put money into their child’s lunch account. This is not the first time the U.S. has faced problems with the health of the nation. In 1946, President Harry S. Truman signed the National School Lunch Act. This legislation came in response to claims that many American men were rejected for military service due to diet related health issues. School lunch was established as “a measure of national security, to safeguard the health and well-being of the nation’s children and to encourage the domestic consumption of nutritious agricultural commodities and other food (Gunderson, 2013).”

The National School Lunch Act is a fairly recent addition to American society. For, as the world waged war a second time, the United States began to worry about the strength and health of the country’s soldiers. However, in the beginning, selling excess agricultural goods was more important than building a healthy, well-balanced meal for students. Unfortunately, many children coming from poorer families could not afford well-balanced school lunches, so in order to compensate, the School Lunch Program changed its focus to help these students. Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’s Move!’ campaign was supposed to help solve the issue of childhood obesity, but it actually made it worse due to misleading evidence. She measured that at the time of her election about 40% of the school age children were either overweight or obese at the time. The actual percentage was closer to 20%. By doing incorrect calculations, she provoked a great deal of unnecessary excitement. She has modified the lunches into much less appealing versions of the school food, however, by doing so, she has not only caused many students to not eat their lunches, instead they devour an excessive amount of the unhealthy options that are still allowed in the schools today.
With the implementation of the “Healthy Kids Hunger-Free Act” schools are not serving as many lunches and participation is decreasing. The two texts that I am going to compare are The Times broadsheet article and The Guardians blog post both based on the topic of healthy school meals. These two texts have similar targeted audiences to some extent, like for example both are generally targeting parents who are concerned for their child(ren)’s education and health both of which are affected by school meals. Also, the audiences are expected to be an educated people who can understand complicated texts like the Times newspaper. In that article, the perspective of the writer is quite subtle as the text mostly quotes other people’s research but it still blatantly biased because it’s only consists of quotations from research that support the author’s judgement on Jamie Oliver’s campaign. The Guardian’s blog was also biased but unlike the Times, the perspective was very explicit because there was so much display of the writer’s personal insight into the effects of school meals on her son and other school children at his school.
Obama has new standards for childhood obesity. The new standards are important because kids get most of their nutrition from meals eaten at school. Mrs. Obama said “I’m going to fight until the bitter end to make sure that every kid in this country continues to have the best nutrition that they can have in our schools, because these kids, all of these kids are worth it”. The new standards are now working in schools. A statement was made at a meeting with the USDA stating that “combined with the improvements in school lunches that the schools began implementing this school year, at long last, all foods and beverages sold in schools will need to meet healthy nutrition standards.
