I felt this short story is trying to bring attention to the little things in life we take for granted as well as being thankful for all those little things. If I was Sargent of the particular unit called death row, depending on certain things I would have let Gerald (Bishop) speak with Jethro. If I felt I knew Bishop and felt he was of no harm than I would have let him speak with Jethro because it was Jethro final few days before he was executed. So maybe he did need someone to speak with. At the same time if I was new and did not know much about the inmate and was not sure what he was about, I would not have let Bishop out to speak with Jethro. I would if I was a new correctional officer because I would not now the inmate for even the facility well enough to do so. So I would not feel safe or comfortable to letting that inmate out at all especially with the prison unit being called death row, which are where all of the serious murderers would be in my opinion. I feel like the supervisor is a poor excuse of a supervisor because he is at work to do a job with is supervisor but yet he is off sleeping. I feel the supervisor is disconnected from his staff, which increases the potential for inmate and staff corruption. He supervisor seems to be failing to provide adequate supervision, which could lead to low ethical standards and cause workers to not follow the rules. I feel if the supervisor was up monitoring the correctional officer’s behavior Bishop would have not been able to speak with
