A supervisor is a leader who supervises over a person or facility. These supervisors are similar in positon as a director, manager, chief and more. A supervisor handles a wide variety of responsibilities, like helping it subordinates with understanding goals and the facilities targets. Training new, workers on their role and job titles. Assisting with hiring and firing employees. resolving escalations, and many more. Unfortunately some supervisors are not great to work with while others are. Great qualities that make an effective leader would be a supervisor that inspires, motivate, and instill high values in their employees. trait theories. Behavioral theories focus is more so on the supervisor behavior to where he/she is task driven and empathetic toward his or her subordinates. Task driven leaders thrive on a more structure, detail and clear division when it comes to one role and responsibility. The main down about a task driven leader is that some workers enjoy working alone and independently and may feel uncomfortable working with leader who doesn’t give their workers space and independency. Contingency theory states that leaders must select the correct leadership style to match a particular problem. Since leaders have many different responsibilities, they also have many different situations they will face and have to confront. The contingency model of leadership created by Fred Fieldler focused on three factors 1) positon power, 2)structure of task, 3) interpersonal relationship between a leader and his or her followers. Fieldler also created traits that could be used to measure positon power. The ability to reward behavior, possesses official rank and status, has knowledge that of similar to what ever work position is attained, and are aware of the many alternatives that can be explored in order to accomplish the desired goal. The trait theory of leadership expresses that every leader consist of specific characteristics that enables them to be victorious. According to trait theory leader advance and flourish well with definite traits. Traits like the ability to come forth, and present new ideas, accomplish and achieve academic quality, and lastly the ability to work well in a group and with others. These models express that leaders who conserve and cultivates high ethical standards within his or her workers, may be less experienced and there for less respected by subordinates. So a supervisor must be able to cultivate a work environment that fosters high ethical standards. Criminal justice supervisor also face unique threats also within each of the segments of policing, probation, parole and corrections. Starting with threats toward correctional supervisors would be peer culture, which is when supervisor are influence by more experienced supervisors, in which those ideas may create ethical dilemmas for the regular correction officers. So communication between the workers and supervisors are key because communication should provide a more successful environment for both workers. Another threat would be denial of responsibility which could go for all four professions, because a great leader will never look for excuses, when things are not going right. Probation and parole officers both face issues when it comes to managing their staff as well. Issues like probation and parole officers usually have a ton of offenders who have committed more serious crime then in the past. Also the turnover rate, for this particular position is very high. This profession also receives less pay then many police officers also this profession experience high levels of stress due to all the case work paper work and deadlines. Last but not least is policing unique threat supervisor face, is failing to exercise discipline. Workers who see their supervisor is lacking leader ship or low ethical standards start to see their supervisor as weak and easy to manipulate. This lack of respect could lead to ethical problems like enforcing laws, and responding timely to low priority calls. Forensic Scientist A forensic scientist is an individual who assist in investigative crimes by gathering and observing physical evidence. Most technicians specialize in topics such as crimes scene investigations or laboratory analysis. They usually walk around the crime scene’s take a few photos, take notes gather important physical evidence that may be left behind by the possible perpetrator, and also more. Forensic scientist has a unique relationship with law enforcement, prosecutors and defense attorneys. Altho the scientist works in close relation with these other professions it is important the forensic scientist remain impartial and independent. Failure to remain impartial may result in presentation of case in court, the fairness of the findings. The forensic scientist has a professional duty to work first as a scientist. Throughout the working process of scientific observation and analysis the scientist should at all times sustain their self-determination and morality. Another ethical challenge forensic scientist may face is pressure from others. For example these scientist can sometimes feel pressure to create and obtain certain result to testify to specific findings in court. There are substantial public and political pressure to identify a suspect, make an arrest and obtain a conviction. It is important that the scientist don’t view himselve as a crime fighter or become a part of the accessory process but more so just a scientist that analysis the important physical findings. Which is why they says scientist should also remain unbiased and neutral. 257 261 The Mercy Seat While reading The Mercy Row I felt this short story was very interesting and a different side of life to read.
I felt this short story is trying to bring attention to the little things in life we take for granted as well as being thankful for all those little things. If I was Sargent of the particular unit called death row, depending on certain things I would have let Gerald (Bishop) speak with Jethro. If I felt I knew Bishop and felt he was of no harm than I would have let him speak with Jethro because it was Jethro final few days before he was executed. So maybe he did need someone to speak with. At the same time if I was new and did not know much about the inmate and was not sure what he was about, I would not have let Bishop out to speak with Jethro. I would if I was a new correctional officer because I would not now the inmate for even the facility well enough to do so. So I would not feel safe or comfortable to letting that inmate out at all especially with the prison unit being called death row, which are where all of the serious murderers would be in my opinion. As a supervisor I feel the behaviors that are being modeled by the employees are from the supervisor. The supervisor did not seem to be much involved since he short story stated he was taking a nap and will be upset if anyone was to interrupt him. I feel like the supervisor is a poor excuse of a supervisor because he is at work to do a job with is supervisor but yet he is off sleeping. I feel the supervisor is disconnected from his staff, which increases the potential for inmate and staff corruption. He supervisor seems to be failing to provide adequate supervision, which could lead to low ethical standards and cause workers to not follow the rules. I feel if the supervisor was up monitoring the correctional officer’s behavior Bishop would have not been able to speak with
Jethro.

Ted Conover, an investigative journalist decided to investigate the conditions within Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, New York. Taking his investigation to a new level, Conover applied to work as a corrections officer. This decision came after being repeatedly denied the opportunity to chronicle the life of a corrections officer in training by the New York State Department of Corrections. He used this experience to author his book Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing and give a first-hand account of life as a corrections officer. Conover goes on to describe the life of a corrections officer going through his first year of training and adjusting to the conditions within the prison. He further describes the interaction between corrections officer and inmate and how these interactions affected his own life.
I feel that this book gives a rough, inspiring and passionate warning that the rush to imprison offenders hurts the guards as well as the guarded. Conover reminds us that when we treat prisoners like the garbage of society, we are bound to treat prison staff as garbage men -- best out of sight, their own dirt surpassed only by the dirt they handle. Conover says in one part of his book, “Eventually admitting that being in a position of power and danger brings out a side of myself I don’t like.” I feel both prisoners and officers deserve better.
In the case study of whistle-blowing at Corcoran State Prison, two corrections officers were all but shunned for the actions they took to put an end to the mistreatment of prisoners. Officers Richard Caruso and Steve Rigg witnessed their fellow corrections officers abusing their power by placing rival gang members in a small recreation yard in the Security Housing Unit (SHU) to promote fighting. The officers would make bets on the inmates, treated the fighting like a sport and used unnecessary deadly force with a firearm at will (Dryburgh, 2009). Caruso and Rigg, both former marines, had superior comprehension of ethically handling a firearm; the actions of their co-workers became unacceptable so they took action (Dryburgh, 2009).
Newjack is Ted Conover’s personal memoir as a correctional officer in one of New York’s famous maximum security prisons: Sing Sing. The job of a correctional officer consists of long days locking and unlocking cells, moving prisoners to and from various locations while the prisoners beg, aggravate and abuse them. After a short time at the academy and a brief period of on-the-job training, Conover found himself working, often alone and always unarmed, in galleries housing sixty or more inmates. He heard of many stories that happen in prison. Stories include inmates beating inmates and burning their cell house, an inmate who was beaten by correctional officers after striking an officer in the head with a broom handle. Surprisingly, there are even some instances where there are voluntary sexual encounters between female staff and inmates. It is really a welcoming job for the “newjacks” and for the readers. On top of that, supervisors do not mentor or guide new officers and officers on one shift push problems off onto the next. Conover sees and realizes that correctional workers are very flexible characters, neither good nor bad, but must cope with stress and problems in a well-organized manner. As Conover points out, that at Sing Sing is against the possibility of staff getting to know prisoners. It is ridiculous to see that there are problems that prison administrators clearly could have solved but do not, instead, they care more about the inmates and officer’s relationship. In particular, enticements for better supervision and more support for effective staff are clearly needed.
After reading the book I have gained a new understanding of what inmates think about in prison. Working in an institution, I have a certain cynical attitude at times with inmates and their requests. Working in a reception facility, this is a facility where inmates are brought in from the county jails to the state intake facility, we deal with a lot of requests and questions. At times, with the phone ringing off the hook from family members and inmates with their prison request forms, you get a little cynical and tired of answering the same questions over and over. As I read the book I begin to understand some of the reason for the questions. Inmate(s) now realize that the officers and administrative personnel are in control of their lives. They dictate with to get up in the morning, take showers, eat meals, go to classes, the need see people for different reason, when to exercise and when to go to bed. The lost of control over their lives is a new experience for some and they would like to be able to adjust to this new lost of freedom. Upon understanding this and in reading the book, I am not as cynical as I have been and try to be more patient in answering questions. So in a way I have changed some of my thinking and understanding more of prison life.
The way correction officers are treated in prison is dreadful. “A corrections officer was seriously burned Monday morning in an attack by an inmate at the Green Bay Correctional Institution” (Roberts, 2016). This topic interest me because most of my life my brother has described the working conditions of correction officers in prison. I remember him telling me how one officer had his finger bitten off by an inmate. Correction officers are the guards who work in prison to enforce prisoners, so that inmates do not find themselves constantly in trouble. In addition, the officers ensure inmates’ safety. Despite the fact that the officers want to secure the inmate 's safety, people are unaware of the hardships officers face every day. A great deal of the rigorous challenges guards go through are never mentioned on the news or make it to newspapers. Introduction What does it mean to be an effective supervisor? Before taking this class, I thought that if a supervisor is able get their employees to work effectively, and efficiently, then the person is an effective supervisor. I didn’t realize until taking this class that supervisors do so much more. After learning more about the other tasks supervisors do like planning, being effective listeners, and motivating employees, I have a better understanding of effective supervision. I am aware that I have had supervisory experiences.
When put into the position of complete authority over others people will show their true colors. I think that most people would like to think that they would be fair, ethical superiors. I know I would, but learning about the Stanford Prison Experiment has made me question what would really happen if I was there. Would I be the submissive prisoner, the sadistic guard, or would I stay true to myself? As Phillip Zimbardo gave the guards their whistles and billy clubs they drastically changed without even realizing it. In order to further understand the Stanford Prison experiment I learned how the experiment was conducted, thought about the ethical quality of this experiment, and why I think it panned out how it did.
...ple. Before this experience, I do not think I could have ever said I respected a convicted burglar or any criminal. These were humans who made incredibly bad decisions, but that does not mean they do not deserve a second chance if they are willing to change, some aren’t, but I emphasized for the prisoners who were. Prison is a lot of their second chances. “I am lucky to still be alive, if I were not here (in prison), I most likely wouldn’t be alive,” exclaimed one prisoner. This experience allowed me to be thankful for the life I was given, the home I grew up in, and how my parents raised me. I cannot say I would not walk into a prison frightened and with preconceived thoughts again because I would be lying. I have been taught by society to be scared of these people, but I am thankful I can say I did meet kind, remorseful prisoners waiting for their second chance.
This semester along with participating in LTC over the summer I’ve learned leadership is more than being in charge. It’s about, “utilizing and developing skills to influence a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.” The goal is attained by mutual cooperation and cohesive behavior. A leader infuses a sense of positivity and directs others to reach the specified goal. An individual who stands not only for his cause but takes responsibility and motivates others also. There is a clear difference between being a boss and a leader. A leader is a motivator for others and inspires individuals to aim high and attain that aim. However a boss only supervises over his subordinates. Power naturally comes to a leader but that power is not a tool of leader. Rather if one tries to control the circumstances with power it turns out to be authoritarian or even suppressive in its expression.
It is imperative for supervisors to focus on what is required in order for his/her employees to accomplish their job. They must be supportive of their employees and provide continual feedback on their job performance .Supervisor need to include their employees when making changes that effect they way they perform their jobs or finding new way to do things that were problematic. Supervisors should give their employees more responsibly to make them feel more valued and powerful. There is also a major need for promotion, pay increase and compensation system (educational reimbursement, vacation incentives etc.
Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization. Leadership is leading a group of people or company to reach a result or further and the organization. A leader is supposed to be an example of how all employees are expected to act and what they should be striving for. Good leaders also don’t use their position within a company to take advantage of the company and its employees. A good leader is supposed to be able to perform their job with high standards, efficiency, and honor. However, for every good leader, there are bad leaders and the worse the leader the more detrimental he or she becomes to employees and the company they run. Leadership is the ability of a person to influence other people to perform certain tasks or behave in a certain manner in order to achieve a certain goal. A good leader should thus assess the different situations to determine what approach to get desired things done. Effective leaders are not usually born; they are made. This means no one is automatically a leader even with formal authority; learning how to deal with followers is what makes an effective leader. Any organization or group requires good leadership to succeed in achieving its goals. Leaders play the role of unifying all efforts by different individuals towards a common goal. The ability to make followers willingly forego and drop their personal goals and interests for the attainment of the common organizational goals is a key skill which effective leaders must posses. Effective leadership means getting out the best from the followers.
