The consciousness of self is one of the most important aspects of Emotionally Intelligent Leadership. The textbook defines the consciousness of self as is about oneself. It elaborates, “Consciousness of self is all about you. Knowing who you are, what you stand for, and how your answers and actions can affect others are all components of consciousness of self” (25-26). In essence, understanding oneself is consciousness of self. It’s something one would assume one would know, but at the same time consciously very hard to define. For instance, breathing, it is something done unconsciously, and when conscious, people feel differently. The realization of the consciousness of self-enlighten one from the conventional view of oneself. In my case, after I read about consciousness of self, consciousness of self means change because I realized the potential that could reach in both professional and private life. The two consciousness of self’s category I feel the most need of improvement are Emotional in Self-perception and Flexibility. The self-perception is about knowing how I feel regularly. “Self-perception as the capacity …show more content…
To be an authentic-self, it is important to have an honest self-understanding because without it one can’t determine authentic self. Therefore, having accurate self-understanding skills are crucial, “Honest self-understanding means that you celebrate and honor your strengths and honor your strengths and talents while acknowledging your limitations. Knowing who you mean accepting the good and bad of your personality, abilities, and ideas” (33). To have the proper examination of how one’s doing and improve, understanding one is the most important aspect of leadership. Improvement of lacking element will energize others because what one perceives could be different from reality. Leaders often overestimate one’s ability, such as how much stress one can handle, have followers suffer because of leader’s overestimation. Similarly, leaders who have the initiative to energize others. A leader without initiative can be devastating because initiative is directly related to achievement, “Initiative is that they have passion for what they are doing. In this respect, initiative links directly to achievement. Emotionally intelligent leaders know that they can make change happen” (70). The leaders should have the initiative to have passion for the task because the achievement from work comes from passion. Passionate leaders satisfy authentic self and energize others. As one

It contains the perceptions, values, and ideals of the individual, organized in a configuration that has the particularity of being fully aware. Within the dynamics of personality, the concept of the self has the function to choose the perceptions of the individual and control the behavior of the individual. Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
The sense of being aware of yourself as an individual is called ‘Self Understanding’ A sense of self is not achieved in a single step…it develops gradually throughout your life.
"To be self aware is to be conscious of one's character, including beliefs, values, qualities, strengths and limitation. It is about knowing oneself" (Burnard 1992).
When I think of effective leaders, I think of leaders with strategies, visions, or powerful ideas. However, this course has taught me different. While strategies and ideas are necessary for being a leader, it takes emotional intelligence for a leader to be successful. Emotional intelligence is essential for social and professional competency in any field, especially in the healthcare field where feelings affect individual as well as institutional health. As an individual going into the healthcare field, I must possess the ability to perceive, use, understand, and manage emotions, as it will se...
Great leadership doesn’t necessarily come from what you do, but instead from how you do it. According to Goleman, Boyatzis, and McKee 's (2013) book, Primal Leadership, this "how" of a great leader comes through the heart or emotions. If leaders fail at driving emotions in the right direction, nothing they do, even if they get everything else just right, will be as successful as it could or should be (p. 3). This goes against many of the preconceptions of good leadership. I have always been shown that "good" leaders keep their emotions at bay and lead through intellect devoid of emotion because emotions can distort reality. However, the emotional task of the leader, according to Goleman et al.,
According to Daniel Goleman (2002), self-awareness is the degree to which you are able to notice your feelings, label them, and connect to their source.
In order to understand how one perceives situations and how they can determine the way one communicates; we first must understand the value of self-concept. Self is easily defined; it is one's beliefs, attitudes, feelings and values. It is who one is and what one stands for. Self-concept, is a relevantly stable set of perceptions and emotional states. It is the way one sees and understands oneself, and contributes to how one perceives oneself and perceives situations. One's self-concept may alter their perception, and either enhance or impede one's communication effectiveness. The way one sees oneself can influence the way they see their social surroundings. Only after one become aware of oneself can they be aware of their physical and social surroundings, which will allow one to perceive situations and people with a truer idea and create a more positive outcome.

According to Bryant (2016), “self-leadership is the process by which you influence yourself to achieve your objectives.” So how do you achieve this, you start with developing your leadership point of view. Developing my leadership point of view forced me to reflect on the leader models in my life. It also forced me to evaluate the key events and experiences from my past and determine how they have impacted me as a leader. This self-reflection process allowed me to discover who I am, what my values and beliefs are and what my true purpose is in life. Thus far, this process has made me more self-aware and self-awareness is key to self-motivation and motivating others.

“Self-awareness is a psychological state in which people are aware of their traits, feelings and behaviour. Alternatively, it can be defined as the realisation of oneself as an individual entity.” (Crisp & Turner, 2010). In other words, self awareness is recognising one’s personality which includes strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs and emotions.
Leaders of the future will be faced with many challenges. As the world changes, we must adapt the ways in which we face these challenges, and in turn grow as leaders. A leader is not merely someone which commands a group or organization. A good leader exhibits the ability to take an average team of individuals and achieve greatness. Leadership is not supervision or leading. It is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the end goal. As Barendsen and Gardner stated (2006), “the best leaders are individuals who, in their work, exhibit three distinct meanings of good: (1) an excellent technical and professional quality and competence, (2) an ethical orientation, and (3) a completely engaged sense of fulfillment and meaningfulness” (p. 266). Good leaders must utilize all of these traits in order to meet the challenges of the future. A few emerging challenges that future
There is perpetual role of self-awareness in any effective leadership approach. A leaders behavior and interaction with his staff is highly dependent on his potencies, faults, class, nature and penchants etc. Being sensitive to the given situation, a manager can determinedly affect the condition and the prospective atmosphere of a unit. Instead, if the leader or manager is not sensitive to a given situation, it could have negative bearing and unthinkable repercussions for an organization (Northouse, 2012).
