Management and leadership are very important functions in getting a job done. In Peter Drucker`s statement “Management is doing things right and leadership is doing the right things”, doing things right means being able to perform well, whilst doing the right things is knowing what exactly what to do inorder to perform well. Management is associated with efficiency, and involves coordinating people's efforts and the allocation of resources to maximize productivity whilst leadership is to effectiveness, which involves directing and inspiring people to achieve set goals (Sterling, 2014). Leadership and management are different but are closely linked functions: each is complimentary to the other and is essential in ensuring change in achieving strategic goals and in boosting team performance (SmallBizConnect, 2012). In this paper, I will explain why knowing yourself and understanding others form the basis for efficient management and effective leadership, and how these concepts can be improved upon. In addition, I would explore how management and leadership complement each other in pragmatic leadership and the great debaters.
Firstly, knowing yourself is an ongoing attention to one’s internal states (Goleman, 1997). It is the ability to see how your emotions and perceptions influence your thinking and behaviour. Self-knowledge is the beginning of self-improvement because it helps build confidence and emotional intelligence, which are skills that can be learned and developed overtime.

My research provided an opportunity to review and identify different elements of leading from previous studies. As I begin my review, I find myself rediscovering essential qualities of successful leadership. The author provides a very interesting case study that depicts the importance of people skills, (Bennis, 2009). In order to be an effective leader you must be able to relate to others through open communication, (Bennis, 2009). A leader needs to be approachable and personable in their actions. The case study provided an example of a leader that lacked people skills. He had been mentored in an environment that was not conducive to team building, (Bennis, 2009). His leadership approach was to be direct and demanding centered on productivity
The emphasis on leaders being not just executives and managers, and that not all executives and managers are leaders, is extremely vital. Anyone can strive to be a leader in whatever organization in which they are involved. Bennis and Nanus claim that leadership is about character, setting the example for how team members treat one other (and in a corporate setting, their clients as well), being truthful and sustaining organizational trust, and encouraging themselves and others to learn. On one hand, it can be easy to see how many people in leadership positions do no match up to these standards of leadership. On the other, it seems a bit like common sense to be truthful to others and to effectively communicate with people who work together everyday. Leaders is an effective tool for summarizing and inspiring leadership not in that it teaches tough strategies and manipulations, but that when looking at an overview of its content, Bennis and Nanus are essentially teaching human relations and human decency. Self-awareness is not about reading a book or attending a course. Self-awareness is a journey, and it takes practice. It’s like a muscle that becomes more effective with time and effort. It gives us mental strength as opposed to physical strength. We are constantly changing and adapting to the multiple external forces around us and to our individual experiences.
