Self-awareness is not about reading a book or attending a course. Self-awareness is a journey, and it takes practice. It’s like a muscle that becomes more effective with time and effort. It gives us mental strength as opposed to physical strength. We are constantly changing and adapting to the multiple external forces around us and to our individual experiences. The more we learn to be aware of, and understand, our reactions, thoughts, and emotions, while also keeping in mind our values, the more we can become the best we can be and the more successful we can become.

There really is nothing wrong with us. The next question is: “I don’t feel fine. Why do I feel so unhappy, angry, sad, etc.?” This is because the emotions we feel are created as reactions to beliefs we have and our beliefs may be negative therefore our emotions react accordingly. Our emotions are responding to what is going on in our mind. The problem is that we have negative thoughts in our mind and we believe them. How we feel emotionally is just a response to those beliefs. The important thing to understand is that we’re not the issue. Self-awareness is the first step in doing this. Where we apply our focus, emotions, reactions, personality, and behaviour determines our direction in life. If we’re self-aware, we can see where our thoughts and emotions are taking us and apply some control allowing us to change them as we go. Until we’re self-aware, we’ll struggle to make positive changes in the direction of our life. When we become self-aware, we understand all the judgments, opinions, thoughts, and beliefs that our mind deals with. We can then see how much this influences our emotions, though not always in a positive way. These emotional reactions are the things we can most easily change.
