Self-awareness is not about reading a book or attending a course. Self-awareness is a journey, and it takes practice. It’s like a muscle that becomes more effective with time and effort. It gives us mental strength as opposed to physical strength. We are constantly changing and adapting to the multiple external forces around us and to our individual experiences. The more we learn to be aware of, and understand, our reactions, thoughts, and emotions, while also keeping in mind our values, the more we can become the best we can be and the more successful we can become.

There really is nothing wrong with us. The next question is: “I don’t feel fine. Why do I feel so unhappy, angry, sad, etc.?” This is because the emotions we feel are created as reactions to beliefs we have and our beliefs may be negative therefore our emotions react accordingly. Our emotions are responding to what is going on in our mind. The problem is that we have negative thoughts in our mind and we believe them. How we feel emotionally is just a response to those beliefs. The important thing to understand is that we’re not the issue. Self-awareness is the first step in doing this. Where we apply our focus, emotions, reactions, personality, and behaviour determines our direction in life. If we’re self-aware, we can see where our thoughts and emotions are taking us and apply some control allowing us to change them as we go. Until we’re self-aware, we’ll struggle to make positive changes in the direction of our life. When we become self-aware, we understand all the judgments, opinions, thoughts, and beliefs that our mind deals with. We can then see how much this influences our emotions, though not always in a positive way. These emotional reactions are the things we can most easily change. Once we take fear out of the equation, and hence a lot of negative emotional baggage it becomes
How do we know when or how to change ourselves as people? Sometimes, we all need a shove from something or someone to help us better ourselves. The most dominant factors are kindness, fear, and regret. These three things can make us willing to go through the hassle and hard work of breaking out of a habit, whether it be putting your feet on the couch, or your attitude.
By reflecting on this and as I continue throughout my career, I concur with LTC Sewell’s article on self-awareness. As I continue to “understand, refine and often redefine” myself and improve articulating who I am to others, my aim is to improve myself, for the current and future organizations that may have the opportunity to be affiliated.
Since we all come into adulthood with self-defeating behaviors that will hinder our progress, determining to recognize and overcome these behaviors will lead to a more fulfilling

In addition a positive self-awareness gives a sense of continuity, wholeness and consistency to a person. In relation to nursing, self-awareness helps nurses to learn about their strength and weaknesses. “It helps nurses to deliver better client care thus; client gets well soon and builds a trusting relation between the client and the nurse. Self-awareness helps nurses to identify several problems that might be a cause I providing better care”(Nancy Burns, 2005).
One of the few steps that have helped me immensely are step 1, step 5, step 9 and step 17. Each of these steps has their own way changing a person’s perspective. The first step says we are required to observe our behavior; does what we say affect us in a negative or positive way? What we need to analyze is whether or not we are subconsciously insulting someone or are they offended by what we said? We need to think before we speak, and that is a problem for some people, including me, I am a social extrovert and occasionally I may make impulsive responses and won’t realize what I said before I realize someone did not like what I said. However, that is when step 5 comes into place, it talks about reviewing our responses in order to see our thought process and what were some strengths. Another is to practice positive thoughts one thing we need to keep in mind, we need to be assertive with ourselves, at times we can be our worst enemy so being self-motivated can help you in the long run by having confidence and how others with positive conversations. Additionally, with positive reinforcements comes rewards, the last step, says it is important to provide ourselves ongoing support and receive a reward for asserting ourselves this way we can have encouragement at the end of our

I should be aware of myself from my own experiences; so I have to consider all aspects of my life before relating to clients. Developing self-awareness will help me to become authentic and open with patients. Self-awareness development can be an introspection, which determines one’s own perceptional knowledge and self-reflection. In addition, development of self-awareness can relate to the interactive reflection. Thus, it can relate to a patient’s review (Rocque, 2012). My public speaking class has already enhanced my knowledge and my ability to give speeches greatly. I know that with time and experience in public speaking, I will become a more skilled and professional public speaker. I will be sharing my first thoughts about my public speaking class, my strengths and weaknesses as a speaker, the speech I am most proud of so far, the speech that was the most difficult so far, and areas I know I need to improve on in order to be a skilled public speaker. Although I have had previous engagements with public speaking in high and middle school, none can be compared to the nervousness I felt about speaking in college level classes.
As we reviewed the self awareness module this past week, it was very interesting to see how the self assessments provided the class with information about their own personal human behaviors. I was aware of most of the information provided but there were some tendencies I was surprised to find that fitted my character. It was good to be reminded of the things I had forgotten about myself. Learning about my individuality and how I interact and respond to others based on my traits, personality and behavior has been an awakening experience. It is also great to know that I can work on areas that need improvement to become a more balanced person to better assist my subordinates, teams and organizations.
In order to do this, I must be proactive. Being proactive means that in between the stimulus and response, there is a third stage. This stage is the freedom to choose, and it is full of self awareness, imagination, conscience, and independent will. Being proactive means that when I feel an impulse, I am able to make that impulse subordinate to the values I hold inside. I am still influenced by the stimuli, but I am aware of this influence and choose how I react to it. An outside stimulus can only affect me so much as I let it. It is not outside forces that help or hurt me, it is my reaction to those outside forces. My character, my basic identity, can only be impacted if I let it. By understanding that my most difficult experiences become the crucibles that forge my character, I can turn any circumstance in my favor. My basic nature is to act, rather than be acted upon. This is why it is key to take the initiative in every situation. Taking initiative means recognizing my responsibility to make things
It was not too long before I discovered the faults in my erroneous living. I finally realized, and truly not a moment too soon, that if I did not start living for the present, my future would soon become my neglected present. I would have wasted my life doing meaningless things and I would have no experience to share with anyone who may be interested in the uneventful life I had led. After I came to this startling revelation, I grew even more apathetic in my depression. I truly felt that there was nothing I could do to remedy this situation and was at a total loss for solutions. Soon enough, though, I concluded that there was no alternative to hard work to change the current state of affairs in my life. It was then that I truly embarked on the most difficult journey of my life thus far. This being the journey of self-alteration and successfully changing my own behavioral patterns.
“Self-awareness is a psychological state in which people are aware of their traits, feelings and behaviour. Alternatively, it can be defined as the realisation of oneself as an individual entity.” (Crisp & Turner, 2010). In other words, self awareness is recognising one’s personality which includes strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs and emotions.
Self-awareness is the ability to know the internal state of oneself by understanding instincts and inclinations of others. What others feel affects us, makes us feel just as happy or vulnerable. Understanding those feelings is a psychological process which results in a behavioral response. Emotional Intelligence is defined as “one’s ability to know, feel and judge emotions in cooperation with a person’s thinking process for behaving in a proper way, with ultimate realization of happiness in him or others” it’s just a small part of what makes a person intelligent and more important to their personality. I personally don’t think I’m an emotionally intelligent person, I’ll get angry and sad easily and there is no way of controlling my emotions. Although, I motivate myself to do many things like work over forty hours a week, go to the gym and go out, anything that’ll keep my mind and body satisfied. Studies showed that people with higher emotional intelligence end up happier and reach their goals. I am not emotionally intelligence but I believe in success and with everything that happened in my life and the way it affected me makes me work twice as
Mindfulness is defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary as “the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one's thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis.” Many people practice mindfulness to reduce stress, but it has also been shown to reduce rumination, stress, and emotional reactivity.
