Mandatory service for high school graduates can create a lot of controversy. There are places that depend on volunteer service and that need people to help out, but no one is coming to help. This is bringing up the idea of requiring all high school graduates to spend one year in service before attending college. There are many reasons as to why people think this is a good idea, but there is also many opposing this. An enthusiast of this may think that it is a good opportunity for high school graduates to help serve our country when we need it. It will give them a chance to see if they like being in service while also helping out our country. Services that depend on volunteers aren’t getting enough help and requiring high school graduates to …show more content…
Requiring every high school graduate to serve will make it evenly distributed between everyone so not every will carry the weight on them and make it feel fair between society. By having this sense of fair distribution it’ll make everyone feel better about doing it so they don’t have to feel like they’re the only one that has to serve the country when we all share the country together. First, from an opposing viewpoint, this requirement might seem to demoralize the quality of the services. This does so by letting just anyone join the services needed and they may not know what they’re doing or they don’t want to so they rebel. This undermines the quality because anyone will be able to abuse the power they were given in the service and can ruin it or damage it. Whether it’s military service or civic-minded organizations, they all play a role and one person can ruin it. Then, it could build social antipathy. Some individuals have strong feeling towards services such as the military and do not care to partake in it. Some may think that the government is punishing the youth and graduates by forcing them to serve their country before they can attend college. This can stir up conflict within they society about why congress would do this and how they can change it or how they can refuse to
Ever since the first war involving America started, there have been countless discussions on who should fight for our country. There are talks of age, gender, and if the service should be voluntary or not. In America, serving is voluntary, although, in other countries, it is not. The service should stay voluntary in America because if not, it would go against freedom and it would be a source of newfound problems within our country. Also, if youth took off two years of their lives to serve, they would not gain experience to work in the fields that need more work force.
High school students should not have to serve one hundred hours of community to graduate because they already have enough on our plates as it is. Most teens already have multiple things going on in there lives. Adding on one more extra requirement onto the hectic schedules of these teens will cause an overload. The school piles kids down with homework and also expects students to study in order to get good grades, which it should be expected, but that is the limit for most. For example, lets say and average teenager who has to pay for their own care and gas and also other e...
If schools wanted to encourage community service then they shouldn’t force students to do it. Schools should let students know about volunteering opportunities and possibly let them sign up for the school so that it is easier for them to do so if they want
The best way to help others be better citizens is to be a better citizen yourself. Most of the teenagers in this generation have trouble serving others because it is too much work for them. In situations like those, JROTC is really helpful for the teenagers. When cadets clean up the trash from a creek, a river or a stream, we help lessen contamination and make the community better. Volunteering helps us cadets give back to the community. For me, volunteering seems one of the most rewarding opportunity. It also makes me consider the experience of the situation. It helps me work with others and be
Why put people together who do not want to be there? If you have a group project that consist of five unwilling people and another five who volunteer to do it, which is going to do a better job on the project? The people who want to do it. Forced People cannot perform a task to the highest level that is achievable. If the government reinstates the draft, and there are 200 soldiers and half of them are not willing can rebel against the others; more of a conflict starts. A better army consists of more willing and capable volunteers. They all share the same army values because they all share the same ideas, Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage, everything a soldier should live by. (Duty, serve and protect the United States of America by all means). Selfless Service, put a person on the line for the protection of others. Most important; unwilling soldiers would not want to do something would want to put them in that situation. As well if they only deploy recruits they need to score a certain grade on the ASVAB, Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. A test to see exactly what type of job people qualify for, or their MOS, Military Occupation Specialty, better score gets a better job. “Additionally, Brighter Soldiers could handle the technical materials in the advanced individual training courses, which enabled the Army to upgrade its entry-level training” (Oi
Lastly, graduation is a big part of anyone’s life, and disallowing it can be devastating, especially for a very small problem. If a student works countless hours getting straight A’s every year, they should not be denied graduation because they didn’t work service hours at their local laundromat. Forcing community service hours is completely redefining what graduation is, since it used to be that the student excelled enough in each subject to get the passing grades, which isn’t the case when students are concurrently forced to do worthless
Finally, when the average American high school graduate steps into the real world and wonders what to do with his life, wondering if going to college is the best choice or wanting to jump into the white/blue collar world. Unfortunately, most don’t have the sufficient funds or the essential experience. That’s why I would recommend them to join the army, because after the completion of
Community service is a common service for people to take care of each other and volunteer. People apply to different community services: soup kitchen, taking care of children and homeless people, clinics, churches, schools, neighbor's house and many countless places to volunteer. Some people really enjoy to work at community services while others do not. These community services can be a punishment for criminals because a court assigns them to do so. However, some people do not agree with community service supporters. While some people believe that there should be a community service requirement for high school and college graduation because students need to learn and have experiences there, they are right; on the other hand, a community service requirement should be allowed for two reasons and not be allowed for another three reasons.
Community Service is a service that is performed for the benefit of the public or its institutions. There are two groups who perform community service, and those are criminals and the rest of us. This means that, for the majority of us, performing community service is completely voluntary. It is for this reasons li that I believe that community service should not be mandatory in high school for graduation. The supporters of this act think of it as an ideal society’s noble concept, but it is rather a noble concept trying to force an ideal society. When you look at it from this perspective you realize it is ironic.
More than two decades ago, President Nixon ended the military draft. Now a new and more menacing form of enlistment is threatening our school systems. This enlistment I am speaking of is that we are forcing "community service" to be a requirement for high school graduation.
Another good use for technology is extra jobs. People can easily get online and put applications in. This is good in case they’re not physically able to get to the place they want to apply for. If they’re able to get to the place and put a good impression in on the boss, they can just search for jobs online then go in and put an application in.
In an article written by Linda Saslow titled High School Mandating Community Service for Graduation, she mentions the many pros to mandatory community service. Saslow mentions school districts like Roslyn and Hewlett-Woodmere (1994, para 3) that have started requiring high school students to complete a certain number of community service hours in order to graduate high school. Their goal is to give “kids the opportunity for new experiences” (Saslow, 1994, para 4). Through research conducted by the school districts, they have come to the conclusion that students who would’ve been “too shy to volunteer have admitted that they were glad they had been forced”. This is good because it’s bringing students together and really opening them up to new
There are certain countries where once you reach a certain age you are obligated to participate in at least two years of military service. I believe that joining the military should not be mandatory, but instead people should join the military on their own terms. The only time that people be forced to join the military is if they are drafted during a war. That is when people are vital and if more people did not join, then it would be catastrophic. It is wrong for people to be forced to join the military; instead they should join on their own.
It is a very selfless act to volunteer for any one of these positions. Performing a year of national or community service could open the minds of many young people. It could have the potential to show them new meanings of life, how others live their life, how we should never take things for granted and many more. No, I don't think that eighteen year-olds should be forced to do services, but I do believe they should definitely be supported. There are many types of civil service programs.
Volunteering: The great experience no one can afford to lose. Opposers say, mandatory community service can have several negative effects on students. “Community service hours are impressive additions to college applications and can provide a student with a great sense of accomplishment; however, the mandatory hours will have many negative consequences” (Cydney Hayes, 2012). Many students are barely even passing the regular school curriculum, and opposers believe that adding the additional load of mandatory service hours will discourage teens from even wanting to graduate. Also mandatory service is usually assigned by a court as punishment to delinquents. “In a small number of cases, community service is required by the court system as restitution for delinquent offenses” (Planty and Bozick, 2006).
