Is clothing really the only way you can express yourself? No, in fact it’s only an allocation of our uniqueness as humans. There are numerous ways to express who you are, especially in school. In today’s society, kids try to emulate celebrities in the way they dress and act. Useless distractions like these are detrimental to a student’s education. Dress codes allow students to set themselves apart from others by their actions not their appearance and acknowledge more student equality. They not only create a better learning environment, but also ensure that students will be prepared for their futures. Youths nowadays are influenced greatly by the teen magazines they read, every youth oriented TV show, or the most popular music videos. Inappropriate clothing such as short skirts, revealing tops, and sagging pants can be very distracting to students who are trying to learn and gain some knowledge. Shirts with risky images and profanity may be offensive to others as well. I feel as if students should learn to express themselves through creativity and their imaginations rather than what they wear. Dress codes allow for fewer distractions in the classroom, which allows students to concentrate on what they are learning and further benefit them in the future. Secondly, a dress code promotes student equality and acceptance. Now a day high school students worry about how they look and feel obligated to fit in. With a dress code, students will be able to take their minds off of their appearance and focus on what actually matters, their education. Peer pressure is increasing throughout schools across the nation and students feel more vulnerable when they don’t fit in or wear the “right” type of clothing.
