The Dress Code Do the clothes students wear affect how they learn? Does it affect how people treat them? Can it affect the safety of students at school? These are just a few of many questions asked daily by many people here at MHS about the school 's dress code. At first glance, the clothes students wear seem to have little to do with learning. Yet as many people say; your clothes are what make you. This is true especially for a environment with education. Focusing on education and not fashion will help one succeed more. One may see students who get bullied for the type of clothing they wear. Even more if their clothes aren’t “in style” or what the “cool kids” are wearing. Many …show more content…
It will raise the learning levels in students. Uniforms will reduce the bullying. The safety of our school will improve. The first step to install this solution would be to do one’s research. Finding other school who installed school uniforms and how it benefited their school. Gathering data, charts, and studies. The studies show how student behavior has improved after school uniforms came into effect. Taking time to learn about students behaviors with and without a uniform dress code. The point of studying both is to show how one can be open to more solutions. After finding studies one must find where the uniforms are coming from, if a specific store will offer uniforms to MHS. Concluding ones first step by having an organized plan and data to show to the …show more content…
Now that everyone is wearing the same thing students are less worried about fitting in. They are more focused on their education and aren’t being bullied. There are many other things that can change if having a school uniform. It can save parents tons of money! Having uniforms parents cut down on buying many outfits, and instead buy one. Without uniforms parents may feel pressured to compete with other families. They buy the most fashionable and expensive clothes. Uniforms can result in declining in truancy and increase attendance. It was reported by Darra a researcher at Youngstown State University. School uniforms have increased attendance records and graduation rates in schools. She concludes “School uniforms are effective in improving school attendance, increasing graduation rates and decreasing suspension
... students in various ways, such as to learn how to ‘cooperate’ with their friends and work out the problem.” (Mr. Knight). Uniforms are not just for schools it's also for jobs or teams you play on, so you just have to sit down and think about how school uniforms can change and the rest of your priors for the good or better, uniforms can make your school a safe place, bully and gang violence free zone. Even the statistics show schools that have uniforms have a decrease bullying, gang violence and other crimes. Putnam City Schools should adopt school uniforms next year.
Henry Ford once said, "Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success." In other words, having a school uniform would be a success if public schools adopted the policy. Many good things will come because of how effective it can lead in public schools. In 1987, the first public school to adopt the uniform policy would be Cherry Hill Elementary in Baltimore, MD. Then decades and centuries later, many of the United States began following that policy. Over millions of dollars were being used to purchase uniforms and are still today. Because school uniforms are a better way to improve schooling, better manage-ments, and reduce ways to hurt one another, it is a way to bring the school as well as the com-munity to be closer together.
Having some sameness can create a safe environment in schools. Having school uniforms can help decrease in-school violence, theft rates and gang colors. School uniforms can also eliminate distraction that clothes can cause. According to a study done at a Long Beach middle school overall school crime decreased by 36% when they enforced a mandatory program. If people did not have to wear school uniforms gang rates may go up, theft rate would be higher and it would help the school see who belongs at school and who doesn’t. You need school uniforms to have a safe environment for people to teach and learn.
America’s school systems seem to have many issues concerning students receiving a quality education without distraction. A current debate argues weather a dress code policy is efficient or takes away from student’s expression. Administrators at schools should regulate a dress code policy because the system improves discipline and student’s attention, reduces social conflict and peer pressure related to appearance, and dress code provides a more serious learning environment.
It is a great idea for schools to implement a policy on school uniforms because statistics show that students who wear uniforms make better grades, the male students are not going to be distracted by what the female students are (or aren't) wearing, and students feel a sense of fairness with one another as they are all wearing the same things and when students are at one with one another their confidence soars, which leads to doing better at school. Student uniforms helps with reducing the amount of bullying therefore the students who would normally be bullied now have a much better disposition while at school, which will lead to a healthier safer learning environment. When students feel less threatened at school, they can concentrate better which leads to better grades. The schools which have an enforced uniform policy have properly dressed students. When teenage girls, want to impress teenage boys dress inappropriately it causes a lot of distractions and trouble. The girls are also envious of on one another so unrest is caused in the classroom throughout the day, not only with the boys who are looking at the girls, but also at the girls who are jealous of the ones getting the attention.
Today, school uniforms and dress codes are controversial. School uniforms for high school students have numerous positive effects, but at the same time, they have a variety of unknown negative effects too. School uniforms positive effects are shown through attendance records, academics, and behavior; but its negative effects violates ones individuality and increases the amount of money spent on clothes.
Mentioned in Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “When children wear their own clothes into school, this then becomes a time for them to judge each other, so it prevents competition and teasing” (Pros and Cons of School Uniforms). When you have school uniforms you won’t be wearing different things so you will become more equal. If the students are equal, it then reduces judgement and bullying between the students and makes the school a better place. Another positive statement on how school uniforms are beneficial comes from, Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “Many educators believe that students who wear school uniforms perform better academically in school, and a study done in 1988 by Notre Dame shows a slight statistical evaluation in student performances among students who wear uniforms” (LoveToKnow). School uniforms will remove the clothing distraction and increase the amount of time given to the academics. Some students take time in the morning to get ready for school, uniforms will allow that time for sleep and studies. According to Procon.org, “Parents can reduce their financial burden when their children are limited to wearing one outfit everyday” (ProConorg Headlines). You won’t feel the pressure to buy clothes that are in style, or expensive and trendy. Uniforms are easier to maintain. They tend to last longer and can be washed easier than other clothes. Wearing school uniforms create a community of higher educated students and equality to
Since the 1990 's schools have reported amazing results by mandating a school uniform policy. Konheim-Kalkstein, Y. L (2006) write: “ School uniforms, proponents have said, can lead to improved discipline and classroom behavior, increased school attendance, respect for teachers, better school performance, higher student self-esteem and confidence, lower
School uniforms should be part of the school systems, because statistics had shown that students who wear uniforms are doing better than dress codes. More students also feel a sense of equality among each other and there are fewer judgments of others. It allows teacher quickly to identify people who do not belong in the building and limit the ways that gangs can identify themselves. School outfit provides students identity, individual spirit, and pride. Uniforms are increasing throughout different schools. School uniforms make students look more formal, and progressively affects student’s self-esteem, discipline, and safety, and develops students be more confident of what they can achieve in life.
In society today, school-age children are under tremendous pressure to fit in with their peers and still perform well academically. I believe that school uniforms in pre-K through high school levels is an excellent way to help children succeed not only in school, but to prepare them for college and the “real world.” Three reasons why I believe school uniforms should be used in all schools is first, they are economic, next, they reduce distractions and finally, they help with social equality.
By requiring school uniforms in public schools, education will be improved. A dress code will enforce discipline toward learning. Uniforms improve a person’s outlook toward success. Students generally act the way they are dressed. With fewer distractions, students see the school as a workplace for teaching and learning. Students also have less stress in their lives because they are not in a fashion competition. Dress codes also lead to a change in grades. Mainly this happens because the student’s attendance comes up. There is also a change in grades because it is easier to focus when everyone looks alike.
School Uniforms School uniforms are increasingly popular across the nation. In fact, it is a huge controversial argument of communities rejecting these mandated school uniforms in their schools. However, school uniforms are not meant to be a negative thing; in fact, they can be positive in many ways by: eliminating cliques, saving money for parents, and taking away the bullying from students less fortunate. Meanwhile, on the other side of the argument, people believe that school uniforms will violate students’ freedom of expression, create a financial burden on families, and uniforms will not alleviate problems. However, with a solution that would benefit both parties, the public school systems in Oklahoma City district would benefit greatly if this policy were adopted in all the schools; since, the district only has 74 public schools in uniforms, while 17 schools are not.
Parents have to locate the right pants, socks, and shirts. Parents have to work extra hard on getting stains out of the uniforms. Uniforms can be costlier than other clothing. Children have to find other ways to express themselves. For instance backpacks, accessories, and other aspects become more important. This can be a challenge if their children is already struggling to find away to express themselves. On the other hand uniforms can be a great opportunity to get your children involved in something new. Your children will not have to think about what they are going to wear when they get up in the mornings. Parents you will not have to tell your daughter that she is showing cleavage or her shorts are too shorts. Or even get that phone call to bring your son some extra jeans because the ones he wore today have holes in them. School uniforms can help your child feel like they are a part of a group because all of the students will be wearing them. I believe that there will be less bullying. I also strongly believe that school uniforms is a great idea and offer a lot of positives in comparison to the
Uniforms in public schools are becoming accepted throughout the world. The public school systems would benefit significantly if this policy were to be accepted. Wearing uniforms in public schools result in positive effects.
An article in the Wall Street Journal reports that students are still being ridiculed for wearing the wrong clothes, and in fact, fashion-related bullying appears to be on the rise, according to Dorothy Espelage, a psychology professor at the University of Illinois. This evidence contradicts the opposing team's argument. Additionally, the opposing team claimed that they have never seen bullying based on brands in our school, but this assertion is easily refuted since we wear school uniforms at SIS. Therefore, it is evident that bullying based on clothing, including brands and inexpensive clothing, is still prevalent and increasing in frequency. As bullying is detrimental to a student's well-being, it is crucial to prevent it and promote healthy development by implementing school uniforms globally, particularly in Hong Kong.
