In Montgomery County, it is required that students must earn 75 hours of community service in order to graduate high school. Most students are not in favor of volunteer hours being mandatory because students believe 75 hours is too many to earn before graduation. I am in favor of mandatory community service hours. Community service allow students to gain experience with the outside world and learn the true meaning of giving to the community. It also helps students find their true passion in what they want to do for the future. Community service can help students find their passion for their future job. In “ Volunteer Work Opends Teen’s Eyes to Nursing” The Detroit News states that Prueter, a thirteen-year-old boy, “hopes …show more content…
Studies also state that it can only negatively affect students if the requirements were strict. For example, if a school required a certain amount of hours in only tutoring other kids or feeding the homeless and kids do not have a choice, then that is when students start to dislike volunteering their time to the community. It is more likely for students wanting to volunteer if there are activities they are interested in. For example, one might like sports so it would be best if the student is involved with an activity to do with sports and later on it can help them figure out what they want to do for the future; they might gain a passion for coaching. If students had a choice in what they want to volunteer in then the requirements they need to meet should not be the problem because they will be doing something they enjoy. Another problem students may have with mandatory requirements is that there is not enough time to complete the 75 hours. Of course high school students have busy lives with friends, homework, sports, clubs, and much more, but students can start earning hours when they get into 6th grade; students have 7 years to complete 75 hours of community service. It is not that students do not have time to complete the hours they are simply not using their time wisely, until they wait to enter junior or senior year to get it
Imagine a typical teen, they have a job, homework, sports, and other extracurriculars. They don’t get home till late at night and they are exhausted. This teen can take much more and thankfully they are about to graduate, but wait the school wants them to fit in one hundred of community service into that schedule in order to graduate. How on earth is this busey teen suppose to do that with all that they have going on? Students should not have to do one hundred hours of community service to graduate high school.
This school should not require 100 hours of community service as a graduation requirement because of the busy lives of teenagers, the pressure of graduation, and loss of enthusiasm for community service. Schools should encourage community service but this is not the way to do it.
Welcome ladies and gentlemen , my name is Gary Gidhay. I am here today to convince you that the minimum requirement of 40 volunteer hours is not only helpful to your community, but it is also essential to the development and health of the average teen. Now the average teen is bombarded with distractions, some of these being social networks, friends, family affairs/problems,video games, and even relationships in general. Some adults may think that these can be easily avoided , however those people are incredibly wrong. Being a teen in this generation is like nothing anyone will ever experience , we have everything at our fingertips , we have so many things to do it is almost impossible to get anything productive done. This is just one reason why the 40 mandatory community service hours are incredibly important to teens. These hours teach us things that if we were not forced to do , we would never learn and would make it very hard for us to strive in a typical work environment. We learn skills that we will use for the rest of our...
Community service hours are a significant issue to all students around the globe, as they are taking a substantial amount of time away from their lives scouring for some kind of work to do. This is especially a problem for those who do not live near any public organizations, and do not have the schedule to do any work for them. Most students go searching around their neighborhood asking if their neighbors have any work for them, which does not help anyone academically. Thus, most community service hours that are done don’t relate to their academic classes or technical area.
Sortal, Nick. "Community Service Hours: What High School Students Need to Know: Caring for Animals, Tutoring Kids, Helping Seniors: Volunteer Hours Are More than a Graduation Must, They Are Life Lessons." South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Sept. 2009. Web. 25 Apr. 2014.
Community service is a common service for people to take care of each other and volunteer. People apply to different community services: soup kitchen, taking care of children and homeless people, clinics, churches, schools, neighbor's house and many countless places to volunteer. Some people really enjoy to work at community services while others do not. These community services can be a punishment for criminals because a court assigns them to do so. However, some people do not agree with community service supporters. While some people believe that there should be a community service requirement for high school and college graduation because students need to learn and have experiences there, they are right; on the other hand, a community service requirement should be allowed for two reasons and not be allowed for another three reasons.
Community Service is a service that is performed for the benefit of the public or its institutions. There are two groups who perform community service, and those are criminals and the rest of us. This means that, for the majority of us, performing community service is completely voluntary. It is for this reasons li that I believe that community service should not be mandatory in high school for graduation. The supporters of this act think of it as an ideal society’s noble concept, but it is rather a noble concept trying to force an ideal society. When you look at it from this perspective you realize it is ironic.
Education is a tool that can be used for various purposes. Such an experience ought not to be restricted to a structural, schoolroom environment. Undoubtedly, academics are an indispensable element of the evolutionary experience of gaining knowledge; however, the formation of empathy and both communication and self-reflection skills is equally essential.
No matter who you are, it is safe to assume that everyone would agree helping their community is an important thing. Society does not run without people who are willing to help one another and put other people before themselves. However, a big factor of volunteer work is that it should be, in fact, voluntary. The idea of this school adopting a policy that would require all students to complete 100 hours of community service before graduation sounds like a good idea at first glance, but careful thought reveals that this may not be the best way to get high school students involved in their community. Forcing students to complete community service hours is not a good idea because it can negatively impact their health, it creates a pattern of episodic
In an article written by Linda Saslow titled High School Mandating Community Service for Graduation, she mentions the many pros to mandatory community service. Saslow mentions school districts like Roslyn and Hewlett-Woodmere (1994, para 3) that have started requiring high school students to complete a certain number of community service hours in order to graduate high school. Their goal is to give “kids the opportunity for new experiences” (Saslow, 1994, para 4). Through research conducted by the school districts, they have come to the conclusion that students who would’ve been “too shy to volunteer have admitted that they were glad they had been forced”. This is good because it’s bringing students together and really opening them up to new
All Americans should volunteer their services in their community. High School students are required to volunteer so many hours before they are eligable to graduate. Most High Schools now have a minimum of fifty hours that they make their students do before they allow them to walk across that stage and get their deploma. Volunteering your help or service for someone else's benifit makes you a better person in the long run. Not everything should be about what you get out of the situation.
The idea that students should be required to perform community service hours before graduating may not seem like an idea you’d want to agree with but it’s actually a lot more helpful than you think. Not only does it help to show that you are involved in the community but it also shows that you can schedule your time and multitask, can be very social and outgoing, and that you have responsibility. To begin with students should be required to perform community service hours before graduating because it shows that they can schedule their time and multitask. Let’s be honest, most teens at this age do not know how to schedule their time and tend to constantly fall off track, which can be a contributing factor to why many do not end up graduating.
Mandatory service for high school graduates can create a lot of controversy. There are places that depend on volunteer service and that need people to help out, but no one is coming to help. This is bringing up the idea of requiring all high school graduates to spend one year in service before attending college. There are many reasons as to why people think this is a good idea, but there is also many opposing this.
Community service in Massachusetts should not be required to graduate and get into college. I believe that students should be able to graduate from high school without performing community service because students have other classwork and out of school activities, it takes away from the true purpose of community service, and most students won’t do it because they are made to. Ridding of community service would be most beneficial to the students, their already busy schedules, and the community.
Community Service: The Benefits. Volunteering: A great experience no one can afford to lose. Opposers say, mandatory community service can have several negative effects on students. “Community service hours are impressive additions to college applications and can provide a student with a great sense of accomplishment; however, the mandatory hours will have many negative consequences” (Cydney Hayes, 2012).
