What are Lunch Ladies Really Doing?
Back in the day the students of America were provided with actual meals that were cooked for lunch. Their lunch ladies actually cooked and prepared their meals before there were food heaters and other food heating appliances. Nowadays our school meals are heated and served to us rather than cooked. I believe it’s time to put an end to these artificial meals. It’s time to have meals actually cooked and served to us.
The government is all about being “healthy,”so that is why we are served fruits and vegetables to be incorporated into our diet. Just because it is a fruit does it mean that it is necessarily fresh and healthy? Everything we eat comes in packages from

At school we have food that seems appealing to the eye and to our taste. According to Lucy Komisar, The Center for Science in the Public Interest said that, “...sending food to be processed often means lower nutritional value...” (Lucy Komisar. Par.6) What they consider healthy is obviously not as healthy as it could be if food was actually cooked and not processed. All day I see our lunch ladies pulling out different processed food items everyday from those food heaters. We have foods like Chinese food, hamburgers, and chicken sandwiches that are thrown in and out of those food heaters, but how do the lunch ladies know when they are cooked to their full potential? Obviously they do not because many times I have eaten the Chinese food and the rice was uncooked. I have also had many hamburgers and chicken sandwiches that were a pink color because they were not completely done. “The beef and poultry used in schools are held to lower standards than the standards used in fast-food chains like Mcdonald's.”(Amy Kalafa. Par.3) I believe that a lot of that had to do with how these meals are prepared and what they are being prepared in. I feel that if your would not eat the food being served at school at home then it should not be served at all. I think it is best that the government put an end to instant cooking and bring back the classic cooking method into our schools
Janet Poppendieck is a professor of sociology at Hunter College in New York, and additionally she is the author of several books including her most recent Free for All: Fixing School Food in America. This book centers on America’s recent interest in whether or not our school lunches are healthy. This issue has been put into the spotlight recently through shows such as Jamie Oliver’s School Food Revolution and in the news because recent changes in the Nation School Lunch Program’s dietary guidelines. Poppendieck’s book looks at the in depth reasons into why school lunches have turned into what they are today, what challenges need to be faced in order to fix school lunches, and ultimately how our the system should be fixed. She accomplishes this by interviewing her current college students about their previous school lunch experiences, working in a school cafeteria, interviewing current school employees, and looking at the history and policies of the National School Lunch Program.
Though proponents of this method argue that it has lowered meal debt and the amount of families failing to pay, Stacy Koltiska refutes this claim by saying: “[The ones making these policies] are suits at a board meeting… They are not the ones facing a child and looking them in the eye and taking their food away.” While it is irrefutable that debt in schools is a problem that must be tackled, it is not a justifiable excuse to take a child’s midday meal out of his or her hands and throw it into a trash can because his or her parents can not put money into their child’s lunch account. There is no excuse for denying a child a hot meal or making them go hungry during the school day for something that is not their fault. Having different food can affect a child health. There are milky ways, cake, cookies, pizza and lets just add some French fries in there and call that lunch. Don’t forget the drink sweet tea, pop and milk that one doesn’t choose to drink it. The students would go back to the class rooms after twenty minutes and be hungry at the end of the da. Garland said, “Instead, we allow school cafeterias to dispense the same junk food that kids could buy in any mall” (621). There has been so much junk food and soft drinks in schools that makes the student health unsafe and a distraction to their education. Garland mentioned that the students are filling up with fat, salt and sugar rather than filling up with fruit, whole grains and vegetables. Schools should be about healthiness, and well balanced diets. With having Students eat healthy can boost up their energy and ability to learn. With that being said when I was in high school it was nothing but junk food for three years. When Michele Obama changed the law on the school lunches my senior lunches have changed. It was nothing but healthy food like whole grain, no sweets, two scoops of fruits and vegetables. At Odessa they had a school store loaded with junk food that would be sold out by forth period. As reported by Cooper, “ The National School Lunch Program needs 8 billion dollars to feed 30 million children a year to serve high quality foods.” However, this price of amount has to be double to serve healthy foods to students because our next generation has to grow up with high quality foods not with low quality foods. Moreover, according to Cooper, the U.S. spends more than 100 million dollars on fast foods portion which the U.S. suppose to spend less amount of money on fast foods to improve the entire food system of the country. If the U.S. government lower the expense of fast food system and raises the amount of money for school lunches, entire schools of the U.S. would get positive results. For example, students could brainstorm very fast as Albert Einstein, and gain more energy to work out on their gym classes. Furthermore, school have to create agriculture class for students to have strong knowledges in foods. Students can literally be ware of what they eat at their lunch times; they will know vegetables grow in the ground and how foods are really fresh. Therefore, schools must provide farming class as in Berkeley; students have rights to know how foods are important to them. As a result, students could get a lot of benefits for changing school
According to a recent study, the meat being supplied by our nation’s schools might not meet the standards by the fast-food industry. Everyday students are sitting down to a processed, unhealthy, fat filled lunch. While many students are educated in the topic, some may be oblivious to the damage the food is doing to their body. Students all around the world are eating processed, genetically modified food, but with a new school program, they will be getting balanced, all natural meals.
In the United States the daily public school lunch consists of pizza, cheese burgers, Chef Boyardee ravioli, fried chicken fingers, French fries and it gets worse. Most American students hate the lunch that their school provides, which means as soon as they are able to drive, they leave school and go to the nearest fast food restaurant. "Critics say that school lunches contribute to the fattening of the United States." (5) The most controversial argument about US school lunches happened when "David Stockman, Reagan's budget director, proposed classifying ketchup as a vegetable to meet dietary requirements while also slashing costs." (5) Honestly, what's next? American school lunches have to meet the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines, which obviously is not good enough considering "30% of individuals calories come from fat, and 10% from saturated fat." (5)
Since the beginning of time, schools were always a place we could trust. A place where we could send our kid(s) off to without worry of what they may be learning, doing, or eating, but perhaps we should be. As the craving of fast food is growing, so is the demand for it. Some schools have taken advantage of this and brought fast food into their schools, providing it for lunch. A high school in California serves McDonald’s, Subway, and even Quiznos to their students for lunch (Lehmann). The school claims the kids are more likely to buy school food when they see brand foods (n.p.). Schools get money from the National School Lunch Program for every meal they serve, but that money from the government only covers so much (n.p.). To pay the rest of the lunch staff, facilities costs, and food, schools turn to the money they make by selling lunches and breakfast to their students (n.p.). Another school in California has even tried to mimic Round Table, a brand name pizza in their area, with healthier ingredients, but was only able to sell 250-300; when they sold Round T...
In other words, parents are making excuses on not to cook an actual dinner because let 's be honest how do we really know for a fact if the employees cooking the meal that kids been looking for to all day is really well done. Unfortunately, ends up making your child sick and comes to find out they have the commonly E.coli. A bacteria that isn 't the nicest but sure can make someone feel physically terrible and most common for fast foods restaurant to be guilty for. Another example is while I was growing up I don 't recall eating much as then a typically American kid would consume. I do remember the traditional culture dishes that my mother would cook every day right before work.
The food is undesirable and tasteless it looks like it was thrown together. My parents can make better things blindfolded and armless. I’d rather my own meal at home then eat school lunch and it’s such a hassle to wait in line. Students can even go to a nice restaurant
As an embarrassed preteen girl sitting with her dad in a booth, I made a vow early on to never voluntarily step foot into such a restaurant that would force a woman to dress and act in such a demeaning way. Little did I know that at age 16 I would apply for my first job as a hostess at Hooters, and two years later be promoted to the infamous Hooters Girl. Just as my disposition as a white, middle-class, female initially sparked my prejudice against the entire establishment, it also largely affected the percentage of tips received based upon the guests and my experience at the restaurant as a whole. Many families in India simply cannot afford to feed their kids. Children are forced to work to help their families pay for everyday essentials, including food. These children don’t have the opportunity to receive a basic education that would enable them to become successful adults. As a result, another generation of uneducated persons is created, and the vicious cycle continues.
First of all, students aren’t motivated to eat unhealthy, not-tasty food. If you observed students buying lunch in the cafeteria, you don’t often see them buying these kinds, but not limited to, foodstuffs: burritos (which are just beans wrapped in tortillas), “burgers” (meat slapped on two slices of bread), etc. Even the chicken nuggets aren’t very popular. And the prices! $3.75-$4.75 is not worth such “garbahge”, as a teacher would say. Out of the twenty five students I surveyed, 56% stated that they would like to see their cafeteria changed. The reasons being were, “The same stuff everyday – it gets boring”, “Tastes like plastic”, ...
Fast food is popular in America. In fact, one of America’s nicknames is “fast food nation,” (“Healthy” par. 1). It is quick and only takes a short amount of time to get the food. There are so many fast food restaurants in the world. Every corner people turn, there is another McDonald’s or a popular fast food restaurant. What people do not know about this easy way of eating is how unhealthy fast food really is. Quick food does not mean nutritious food. However, many Americans debate whether fast food restaurants should be required to show the nutrition in their food.
According to some of my friends, their parents buy more unprocessed and local foods rather than the usual processed foods (Mei, Murray). There could also be children, or teens, whose parents simply don’t allow them to eat at a fast-food restaurant quite often. Unfortunately, according to the table below McDonald’s seems to be the fast-food chain restaurant that is targeting the youth the most (see table 1). Nowadays, many parents tend to take their kids to a fast-food restaurant simply because it’s easier and faster to order food then it is to cook an entire meal (Murray). Not only is eating out, or at least take out, efficient, but it’s also less stressful on the parents. Children can tend to be very picky eaters, well most of them at least. My younger cousin for one refuses to eat anything green, unless it’s a cucumber. As we progress more and more into our culture of industrialized eating, we need to consider what we are risking in the long run. There’s actually many different things that not only college students but the entire population could do to help reduce our risks in the long run. For one, it would be to stop eating so frequently at these fast-food restaurants. I know many of my peers, who I went to high school with, would often go to McDonald’s for breakfast before school started.
