Recently closed campus has been an argument at our school lately. Should a student have the choice to leave campus? Yes it’s a great idea but lately the school board has been putting it in our heads that that is a bad idea. Students love an open campus it gives them variety. They hate the idea of eating the same unappealing meal every day. Lunch gives students a moment to blow off steam and have some free time. Open campus gives students the time to learn to be more responsible.
The food is undesirable and tasteless it looks like it was thrown together. My parents can make better things blindfolded and armless. I’d rather my own meal at home then eat school lunch and it’s such a hassle to wait in line. Students can even go to a nice restaurant
and get some respectable food. Students know these facts and still leave campus despite having free food served to them. Students may even be tired of school and the around the clock madness. They have to be here and see the same eyesores every day. Students need this time to be off campus with their friends and help relatives. Just to not be here being supervised like animals at a caged zoo. Students have more fun outside the walls they see every day to do something new. All of this just helps the student body to have more “fun” and come back on task. Lunch time helps a student become more responsible altogether. When going for lunch a student must drive or walk; walking helps you stay healthy and in shape. Driving on the other hand calls for knowledge of the roads and problem solving. These traits help make a student more proficient in driving and help manage their money. All of this plays into a student becoming an adult which gives them the skills to survive in the outside world. So in conclusion, closed campus at HVHS is a horrible idea the food is distasteful. This in turn will make the students happy to go to and participate in school. Also, it will make the students more responsible, manage their time and cash. If campus became closed student won’t care, cause trouble and start fights. Whoever thought closed campus at Hatch Valley High was a good idea think again.
Since the beginning of time, schools were always a place we could trust. A place where we could send our kid(s) off to without worry of what they may be learning, doing, or eating, but perhaps we should be. As the craving of fast food is growing, so is the demand for it. Some schools have taken advantage of this and brought fast food into their schools, providing it for lunch. A high school in California serves McDonald’s, Subway, and even Quiznos to their students for lunch (Lehmann). The school claims the kids are more likely to buy school food when they see brand foods (n.p.). Schools get money from the National School Lunch Program for every meal they serve, but that money from the government only covers so much (n.p.). To pay the rest of the lunch staff, facilities costs, and food, schools turn to the money they make by selling lunches and breakfast to their students (n.p.). Another school in California has even tried to mimic Round Table, a brand name pizza in their area, with healthier ingredients, but was only able to sell 250-300; when they sold Round T...
“Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won't come in.” ("Isaac Asimov." Goodreads. N.p., n.d. Web. 01 May 2016.) This quote by Isaac Asimov perfectly states how I personally feel about assumptions. In any event, it is good to have an open mind, especially when it comes to people's personal experiences and struggles. It is better to be a thoughtful person rather than assuming things about people that may not be true. That being said, Assumptions about community college students are unfair and incorrect. Misled people say that community college students are unable to attend a four-year university. As well as a degree from a community college is not as good as a university degree. I
“Hence you see why “liberal studies” are so called; it is because they are studies worthy of a free- born gentlemen. But there is only one really liberal study – that which gives a man his liberty. It is the study of wisdom”, said Lucius Annaeus Seneca, the Roman Stoic philosopher who lived during the time of Jesus Christ. Historically speaking, learning liberal arts we learn ourselves to be passionate, loyal, brave and what is more important, generous. The word “freedom” has been the fundamental component of any American Dream. Today we celebrate our nation’s independence and allowance to govern ourselves.
Students, you, as well as I, have always felt the strain of limitations brought upon you this and past school years. These past years, the school board has been closing students’ ability to do almost what they please to an oppressive detention in which you cannot even walk the hallways to get a sip of water. How many times have you or heard that someone has been given a detention for just walking around the halls? How many times have you been hassled for trying to go to your car and sent back into the school by a so called “rent-a-cop” and a new enforcer cop? All of these and more are related to the idea of a closed campus. I, on the other hand, am on the behalf of an open campus. An open campus gives the student more freedom and responsibility to make the right decisions. As opposition, the closed campus concept would argue that not all or any of the students should receive such trustworthiness from the school. I think that not all but a select group of students should have the open campus opportunity. Another matter with open campus is money issues in many areas in which I will discuss.
College is thought of as what every parent wants for their child, so they can go off andmake something of themselves. For the most part, this is true. Those who attend college arebetter off than those who do not, on average, earning far more than their undereducatedcounterparts. College is a worthwhile investment and should be pursued by all who have thechance because it helps students further their knowledge, it is a place to find who you are, and itgives them a different perspective of the world.College is worth the cost because if college was available for everybody and collegedegrees were handed out as commonly and at the same rate as high school diplomas then collegewould not be that special. Therefore, college would just be an extension of high school. Ifanyone could get their hands on a degree, how would you be able to get the job you want? It isbetter for college to cost money because if a student really wants to attend college and furthertheir education, they should have already been willing to pay or to find a way to pay for collegeto get the upper hand on the general
“More than 76 percent of schools sell soft drinks and sweetened fruit drinks, but fewer than half offered bottles water. Fewer than 15 percent sell low-fat or nonfat yogurt, and fewer than one third order skim milk. Only 25 percent of schools say they've reduced fats and oils in recipes.”(Spake, 2). Choices at lunch range from greasy to unidentifiable. Most students eat school lunches five days a week. So most of the food they eat throughout the week comes from the school cafeteria. Although, the schools do tend to offer healthy choices such as salads, subs, skim milk, and unlimited fruits and vegetables. “Each week Phoenix students are served a variety of fruits and vegetables from guava to grapes and jicima to red peppers. School officials hope that by exposing children to fruits and vegetable they may develop a taste for them and request their parents to buy them.”(Bailey, 1). Real meat is becoming an issue in schools. “According to reports issued by the Physicians Committee for responsible Medicine (PCRM) the USDA dumps hundreds of millions of pounds of surplus beef, chicken, cheese, and pork on the National School lunch Program.”(Lord, 42). Chicken isn't whole white meat; some of it doesn't even taste like meat! Let’s move on to unhealthy foods. There are unlimited amounts of un...
The go-to-college tsunami has given young students who really don’t know why they are there or where they are going. Students been told that college is their only option and they will land better jobs and earn more money with a college degree. However, College is not always the logical next step of high school graduates. There are plenty of honorable and viable choices for the year after high school. The decision not to go to college should not necessarily be viewed in negative way. Many people could earn money by simply going to work in a field they want to explore. There are numerous non-college choices right out of high school such as military service, hospital aide, doing mission work in Central or South America, becoming a nanny, or cultural
At school we have food that seems appealing to the eye and to our taste. According to Lucy Komisar, The Center for Science in the Public Interest said that, “...sending food to be processed often means lower nutritional value...” (Lucy Komisar. Par.6) What they consider healthy is obviously not as healthy as it could be if food was actually cooked and not processed. All day I see our lunch ladies pulling out different processed food items everyday from those food heaters. We have foods like Chinese food, hamburgers, and chicken sandwiches that are thrown in and out of those food heaters, but how do the lunch ladies know when they are cooked to their full potential? Obviously they do not because many times I have eaten the Chinese food and the rice was uncooked. I have also had many hamburgers and chicken sandwiches that were a pink color because they were not completely done. “The beef and poultry used in schools are held to lower standards than the standards used in fast-food chains like Mcdonald's.”(Amy Kalafa. Par.3) I believe that a lot of that had to do with how these meals are prepared and what they are being prepared in. I feel that if your would not eat the food being served at school at home then it should not be served at all. I think it is best that the government put an end to instant cooking and bring back the classic cooking method into our schools
One reason why i believe having closed campus at HVHS is a good idea because the food here is really good. They make the best food here, especially their nacho's. It's a good idea to stay on campus for lunch because they serve you healthy food. When you go off campus you eat nothing but unhealthy junk food. The cool part lunch is that the food is free, you don't have to go out and waste money for the same amount of food
With the implementation of the “Healthy Kids Hunger-Free Act” schools are not serving as many lunches and participation is decreasing. According to the Government Accountability Office (GOA), “Nationwide, student participation declined by 1.2 million students(or 3.7 percent) from school year 2010-2011 through school year 2012-2013, after having increased steadily for many years”(sec. 1). The school lunches became more distasteful and bland; the combinations of foods did not make sense, and the portion sizes decreased significantly. In order to support the cafeteria
Good evening, Mr.Laub, Board Member, thank you for being here despite your tight schedule giving me a chance to inform the troubles our student are facing now in Avon local school. Because of the absence of school buses year after year, students knowing the danger of traveling on ice, or walking under the unbearable heat during the April and may, they have no choice but to suffer through it.
If you observe students buying lunch in the cafeteria, you don’t often see them buying these kinds, but not limited to, foodstuffs: burritos (which are just beans wrapped in tortillas), “burgers” (meat slapped on two slices of bread), etc. Even the chicken nuggets aren’t very popular. And the price is great! $3.75-$4.75 is not worth such “garbage”, as a teacher would say. Out of the 25 students I surveyed, 56% stated that they would like to see their cafeteria changed.
Riley Whitman 11/11/15 Editorial Free College Many Americans today still debate whether or not out government and country should fully implement free college. Those who are opposed to this idea are concerned with quality and accountability of education for all. For those in favor of the expansion of education, free college represents one of the great hopes for a better world. Even in the poorest nations, people believe and support in the funding of the expansion of universities and other higher learning opportunities are wise investments. Being a college student, I disagree with the idea that the U.S. should implement free college for all U.S. citizens.
Every Week, it is customary in Judaism to celebrate the day of rest, which is called Shabbat. G-d made seven days in a week and on the seventh day you are supposed to rest from anything that requires you to do labor such as working, watching television/computer/phone, cooking etc. My experience with shabbat differs every week because I’m always invited to close friends/families house for shabbat dinners. This past week, I had the privilege to attend Chabad on Campus shabbat dinner with all of the other Jewish college students at University of Delaware. Shabbat is known as a very unique and holy day.
Summer break is awesome, but after a couple months, it’s always time for school again. Walking into the class on the first day and hear, “Pop quiz! Let’s see what you know.” Then you realize that over the summer you have forgotten everything from the previous year. Why should we have to relearn material because of a long summer break? This is why we should have school year-round.
