Homework has been considered a learning aid for years. If students learn in the classroom then taking home the assignments will help even more. Unfortunately studies are showing that homework has little to no benefit. It causes stress, loss of family time, less time for extracurricular activities, and both physical and mental negative side effects. Teachers are also not sticking to the 10 minute rule and giving too much. Homework is not helping to compete with other countries. Grade level is affecting how much the homework helps. First graders should have as much as 10 minutes of homework and seniors should have two hours of homework a night. Both the National Education Association and National Parent Teacher Association support that limit(Weir). Two hours seems like a lot of homework but in recent studies done students are averaging three to four hours of homework a night. With two hours a night students are averaging 10 hours a week, three hours students are averaging 15 hours a week and students with four hours of homework a night have 20 hours of homework a week. Robert Pressman, PhD, and colleagues recently investigated the 10-minute rule among more than 1,100 students, and found that elementary-school kids were receiving up to three times as much homework as recommended(Weir).That is a lot of work and not all of it benefits students. Sadly the opposite is true about homework students are assigned lesser quality homework. In Pope and Galloway's research, only 20 percent to 30 percent of students said they felt their homework was useful or meaningful (Weir). It is completely useless to assign 20 questions when 5 is just or more effective. Some things do need practice to learn like vocabulary or spelling but five minutes of that a night can help a lot more or the same amount as 30 minutes. It is arguable that the more practice the better but in reality quality always wins. To compete with other countries homework needs to be assigned but surprisingly the students in other countries are assigned less homework and get better grades. Students who have more homework have shown to have lower test scores. This is because overworking can cause learning burnout. According to studies done by David Baker and Gerald LeTendre, countries that assign a profusion of homework such as Thailand, Greece, and Iran score low and the US may do just as much or more, but only for the international average, yet countries like Denmark and Japan that assign minimal to no homework have students who score high.That evidence highlights the fact that not just individual schools, but whole countries are finding that when a teacher assigns more and more homework their students won't score as high while teachers who assign little to no homework end up with students who score really high as the majority. Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, homework has begun to be assigned more and more often to students, especially in the United States, as it has begun to fall further and further behind countries like China, Singapore, and Japan. Homework is anything assigned by teachers to be completed by the students either at home, or just on their own time. The workload for students has gotten to the point where more and more parents are starting to notice the load for their kids has gotten to be too much. Many kids in high school, even 9th and 10th graders, can have 3 or even 4 hours of homework every night. In the past couple years, homework has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night (Marzano). In addition, studies have been done to determine the value of homework, but overall, the results are mixed at best (Kohn). Even studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep.
In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Homework sounded like a brilliant idea to the person who created it. They only focused on the good things that it would achieve such as the development of self-discipline and good work habits. They did not think of the harm it could bring to students. Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is a waste and kids and teens should choose whether they want to do their homework for extra credit and practice or not.
I think we should not have homework. Whenever teachers over do it with home work Kids end up sleeping late and can’t focus the next day. One reason why students shouldn’t have homework is because at home students struggle with the work and don’t know how to do it. Students should only have class work because if they are having a hard time doing it they have a teacher there to help them.

Homework has been prevalent and considered vital in education for decades in the United States of America. For all the years it's been around and all of the changes that have occurred around it, it's peculiar that few aspects of homework have altered. With assignments being completed through new computers and tablets, and students learning lessons through the internet, the major focus in advancing homework as only been in increasing it's length, straying it from lessons taught in its preceding classes, and demeaning its value simply to a grade. Year after year the value of homework is a highly disputed topic. With more academic assignments to be completed at home, it is debated whether homework is good or bad. The National PTA (Parent Teachers Association) recommends only 10-20 minutes of homework per night in the first grade and then an extra 10 mins for every grade after that. For middle schoolers, it seems as if math homework would be the only subject a student could truly benefit from. Math homework reinforces the skill taught in class and time would be wasted in class solving similar problems just to practice what is taught.
A MetLife study found that in 2007, 45% of students in 3rd - 12th grade spend over an hour everyday on homework. I feel that doing this much work at home, is a problem. Teachers have so much to teach and go through, students rarely have time to complete the homework in class. If the students were allowed to immediately start homework, (if they didn't need help), then I think this problem will be resolved because it seems like teachers over elaborate on lessons. Teachers should give students a greater amount of work time in class, making sure students get homework done, getting the help they need, and getting better grades.
