Have you ever felt that your homework was just to take up your time after school? Almost like the teachers want to give you irrelevant work, that doesn't help with your education whatsoever. In this essay I will tell you why I am against homework and the evidence that supports it.
To start off, homework can have very negative effects on the student that receives it. For example, the chair of educational administration for Penn state, Gerald Letendre, said that even thirty minutes of homework a night can have a very big negative effect. Including sleep disruption, stress, and bad physical effects on the body. Which is detrimental to students well being and health. Also,according to the case for and against homework marzano says that homework has a big negative effect on a families overall happiness. Including but not limited to, less time spent together, more stress with parents trying to help, and family communication. This all shows that homework has very detrimental effect on a students physical and mental health, and teachers should start contemplating whether homework is actually good.

When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? In today’s era, students are faced with the tug-of-war situation of too much stress. Should students really be subject to this kind of stress due to tremendous homework hours? Students go to school between six and seven hours a day. Should they really be given homework that takes them all night to finish? Dr. Michael Nagel says that too much stimulation can be bad for a student’s brain. If the brain doesn’t fully mature until the third decade of life, then do we really want put the amount of stress and stimulation on the brain that homework causes? Do we really want to potentially harm our brain?

Kralovec, author of The End of Homework argues that doing homework during high school has little or no effect on successful study skills of students in college. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. In addition, the average adult does not return home from the office with three or more hours of work to complete (Kralovec). When "busy work" assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment. Homework has been around since the establishment of the first schools located in the original thirteen colonies. Every student understands what it means when a teacher assigns homework; it usually means hours of the student’s free time spent on school work and not enough time to spend with their friends or even with their families. Many teachers have the mind set that homework allows students to practice the subject they learned in class. Recently, researchers have found evidence to show that homework has caused more trouble than help to students.
