Year after year the value of homework is a highly disputed topic. With more academic assignments to be completed at home, it is debated whether homework is good or bad. The National PTA (Parent Teachers Association) recommends only 10-20 minutes of homework per night in the first grade and then an extra 10 mins for every grade after that. For middle schoolers, it seems as if math homework would be the only subject a student could truly benefit from. Math homework reinforces the skill taught in class and time would be wasted in class solving similar problems just to practice what is taught. According to literacy expert, Professor Harvey Daniels, most of what homework is doing is driving kids from learning.
Through my research I have found some students feel forced or obligated to choose homework over developing talents or skills. Stanford Graduate School of Education researchers have found 56 percent of the students primary source of stress is homework. Children typically spend most of the day in school and are then given assignments be completed at home. According to an article written by Alfie Kohn, there are three facts that few people stop to think about. One fact is the negative effects of homework are well know and the fact that it negatively impacts parents relationship with their children and parents worry about being criticized for not being involved enough or involved too much. (Kohn, 2007)The second fact is the positive effects of homework are mythical. Assigning homework in elementary or middle school has no evidence of any academic benefit. On top of that, nothing has ever been substantiated that homework build character or teaches children good study habits. Elementary aged kids should not have the burden of doing homework like high school or middle school aged kids. Three reasons for this include the fact that homework gets done by the parents, it causes mental and physical health issues and it causes lack of social ability skills. These three things are just a few possibilities of what can happen when an elementary kid has homework.
When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework. Homework is not beneficial and it should be banned for students Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
Many parents are also bothered over the force of homework on the connection between their kids and teens.... ... middle of paper ... ... Touching multiple subjects, they discuss whether assigning homework is beneficial to a child when it comes to retaining information and working on academic work afterschool hours. Would a child benefit more if they spent their time after school doing extracurricular activities or time with their families? Although homework may seem like drudgery, the hard work that is put into homework may pay off in the long run. In the article, “Does homework really work for students?” Jacqueline Carey, the mother of seventh grade student Micah Carey, stated that “homework gives [students] a good foundation for when they move on further in school” (Johnson). Not only that but according to Donyall Dickey, principle at Murray Hill Middle School, “if students do not acquire things in class, they will acquire them through homework” (Johnson). As we can see homework helps and prepares us for higher grade levels while in primary school that can possibly prepare us for college. 4: Clearly, high schoolers should not get homework because it of the issues it causes. 5: One issue it causes is a great deal of stress. Less than 1% of students said homework was not a stressor and 56% of students said homework was the main source of stress. As a teenager, you are already dealing with many stressful things in life, so adding homework on top of that as a main stress point causes too much stress, resulting in poorer health. Which leads me to my next point.
Thirdly, is that excessive amounts of homework can take many hours to do and make students deprived of sleep. To start off, homework does not impact students’ academic performances and instead gives stress to students and parents. If homework does not help out students then what reason is there to do it. When students are given homework they shouldn’t be given too much but should be given the right amount or it can cause various types of problems such as stress and sleep deprivation. The average student can handle 2 hours of homework but passing the 3 hour mark can cause high stress levels. Less than 1% of students have said that homework is not a source of stress. Only some kids can handle a bog load of homework. Students who get good grades spend too much time on homework and this causes high stress levels. Homework offers multiple benefits for real life. One benefit of homework is that it helps the student develop essential skills. While homework may seem like a tedious task, it can help a student comprehend the material. Homework is necessary for more than just a grade; it is an assignment that teaches you valuable life skills. We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning.
