Should student spend another 4-6 hours doing homework after attending school for 8 hours? People from working in the education field, should discuss the pros and cons of homework. Some educators favor homework because it allows the student to improve their skills. However other educators think it interferes with other activities. Making the student have homework everyday has some negative impact on them such as not attending to mandatory activities, being stressed, and staying up late.
Many high school and middle school students participate in other activities after school, which causes complications with doing their homework. Some students participate in sports and other students may have to attend to other mandatory places. Theses activities normally take most of their evening time, and as a result the students do not have the

However most teacher assign excessive homework for the students which causes problems in their everyday life. When teacher assign homework to students it can raise their grade or lower it. There are many cases whether students aren't able to do homework or aren't capable of doing. Both of these situations punish the student for either trying or not being able to accomplish it due to the lack of time or resources. Some teachers say the have enough time to had finished it the day before, but teachers do not know what goes on in their students life. A student may have a part time job, attend to a place where they are obligated to go, or they may have to baby sit their siblings. If the student decides to do homework, they are not being responsible either way because they are not attending anymore even if it was an obligation. The purpose of assigning homework was to be responsible, but how can a student be responsible if they have to choose between to
79% of American middle school and high school students take part regularly in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Many students participate in sports that can take up to 4 hours of their time, daily. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school students will be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste.
Many students who feel the pressure to succeed at the high school level have an unhealthy amount of stress. Students who feel this have been cheating, pulling all nighters, becoming depressed, and seeking relief in drug use, and self mutilation. On average in a recent study at Illinois high school students spend 3.07 hours of homework each night on just homework not including extra curricular activities(Jerushapope,2). Also in this high school students reported getting 6.8 hours of sleep each night, but 34.6% reported getting 6 or fewer hours of sleep(Jerushapope,2). Most high school students spend 2 hours of extra curricular activity each night thats not including homework so after those activities you have to come home and do homework and then you will not have a lot of time to sleep. Also most kids do not get a lot of time to spend with their parents during the weeknights. Some kids cannot even make it to the dinner table because they have so much homework and that is not healthy for the parents and their childs relationship. In ...
There have been so many studies recently that talk about how homework has started to become more burdensome for more students. The United States has gone from teaching to shoving homework in kids’ faces to keep them on the idea that school is always there. Classes have been extended from 45 minutes each day to an hour and a half. This was supposed to allow students work time at the end of classes and get help when needed. Instead, teachers lecture from beginning to end. This gives no time for students to get the help they need when can’t come in any other time. The rationale has changed in America that doing more, always means doing better. This, however, can be the downfall to anything. There can’t be homework assigned just for busy work, that becomes a waste of time. The homework needs to be assigned as a thoughtful way to engage students, so they know what is being
Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is a waste and kids and teens should choose whether they want to do their homework for extra credit and practice or not.
The second article I looked into was “Homework Research and Policy: A Review of the Literature” written by Harris Cooper goes over what he has researched over the issues that homework brings up. In this article he discusses how in over 60 years of research homework has been a rollercoaster of an issue. In some periods it is viewed as helpful and that more should be assigned. In other periods it is viewed as too much and that students should be assigned more meaningful tasks. “Elementary students' performance did not improve when they spent more time on homework.
Homework all around the world causes stress and problems to all students, know matter the lifestyles they live. Homework in the long run is just bad for all students. Most students are busy and listening to their school about how students should join an after school activity. “We recommend to students to join an after school activity, it is the best for any student.” So we followed what they said and we joined, but not knowing it would put so much stress on
Research shows that being in school for seven hours a day is enough and homework does not have an extremely noticeable impact besides in stress and obesity. Students being stuck behind a desk for seven hours then being stuck behind a table for a few more is not healthy. Stress is a leading factor to getting depression, and depression can be a lifelong battle. Overwhelming students with homework now could have a bad impact on the rest of their lives. Students spend enough time in school and don’t need the unnecessary stress added on when they get out of school for the day.
Teachers and schools say 60 minutes a day is good, but how is all that possible with all the homework. So with all the homework kids can get really bad habits because of all the stress they have. Kids can get stressed from hard math and science problems and from not enough work done. Those kids rather stay inside because of their projects and homework, this can lead to staying up late. Schools say 8 hours of sleep is good, but often kids only get 6 or 5 hours of sleep because of projects.
High school students have an average of 3.1 hours of homework each night (qtd. in Parker). Homework takes up a big chunk of high school students’ time every night, therefore, the big question is, does homework help? Many educational researchers have studied this topic for over seventy years; however, there is still a huge debate over the value of homework (Cooper et al. 4). Nevertheless, there are many studies that have been done with high school homework and plenty of growing evidence that homework is useful when used properly (Marzano and Pickering 74). While homework may be a timing problem, homework benefits high school students because homework improves in-school achievement and teaches many life skills out of school.
Students are bombarded with hours of homework every night and it interferes with their lives. They are tired of staying up late at night to finish their homework or a paper that is due the next day. They should not have this workload that they have every night because they also have to live their childhood. Life is too short to be staying up until 11:00 because of schoolwork. Homework is unhealthy for students and it is not academically beneficial for them.
When a student takes his work home, he can easily become distracted and forget about his homework. A student does not have to worry about the distractions at home, if he was able to complete his homework at school by joining an afterschool homework club. A student can have so many distractions when he leaves school, which in return makes it difficult to focus and complete his homework on time. Therefore, an afterschool homework club can be perfect to help him complete his homework on time and without any
Are students given too much homework? In the article, “The American Journey of Family Therapy,” a researcher discovered that some teachers assign more homework than students are legally assigned. This poses a problem because it is unfair to give hardworking students more homework than they should be accountable for. Teachers need to be aware of this. If they are than that is unfair and they should stop!
Seven hours of homework per week are too much for a student to handle, considering that students are supposed to sleep eight hours a day, go to school, and have things to do outside of school. Too much homework is known to give students stress. Also, too much homework has been found to stop a student’s motivation to learn because a student may become overwhelmed. Many people believe homework is a positive exercise to practice, but in my opinion homework has more negative effects than positive effects.
With going to school for seven hours, then doing homework for two more hours, we would most likely be inside for almost nine hours. Then by the time we are completed with homework we have to eat supper, then it is starting to get dark outside. With all time we spend at night doing homework we could play outside, or maybe socialize with our family or if you do homework in the morning you would have time for extra rest to be energized for the day. “In their open-ended answers, many students said their homework load led to sleep deprivation and other health problems. ”(Stanford Research Shows Pitfalls of Homework)
Students have been doing homework for centuries, and still continue, ranging to different subjects. Homework are the assignments given by teachers and are expected for the student to complete after school. Reason being because the teacher wants to understand content, practice, or its to give out busy work to the student. Yet people are two sided about this topic, arguing that homework needs to be given out to students or not. Parents and teachers need to comprehend the principle of homework and how it supposed to function in addition to comprehend how the work is affecting the students; this controversial topics need to be considered more in order to adjust the situation that is occurring now.
