At some point in each individual persons life they attend some type of school, class or learning facility. Whether it is at school, home or any other place that one would be taught a subject or lesson. While attending a class or lecture each person that is their to learn will grasp the concept of the lesson in a different way and gain a different amount of knowledge and understanding on the topic no matter what. This reason being is every one has a different way of learning. Just as each individual is different in their own way they also have a different way of gaining information from a source. The way people are able to grasp information that is being given to them is called a learning style. Below you will identify the different types of styles and theories on how they apply to education.
One of the ways Pritchard (2008) defines learning styles is “A particular way in which an individual learns” (p. 41). This is the most basic way to describe what learning style is. Since each and every person is different in their own way, they each have a particular way of learning. Luckily the different styles of learning have been identified and can help aid anyone seeking knowledge in advancing their learning style. The 7 learning styles identified today are visual, auditory, kinesthetic, verbal, logical, social and solitary (advanogy.com. 2004). The most common of these 7 styles, that people identify with is visual style. Visual learners learn best by seeing information versus verbally receiving it. If information can be displayed in a picture or diagram the visual learner is more likely to absorb and understand the information in that way. Over the years there have been multiple theories suggested about human intelligence. Howard Gardner’s theory seems to be argued by some, while others embrace it and use it. Applying Gardner’s theory of the eight intelligences- interpersonal, intrapersonal, spatial, bodily, linguistic, musical, naturalistic, and logical- to the education system could help more students learn and understand where their strengths are and where their weaknesses are in order to be able to improve their intellgence abilities.

Howard Gardner is the “John H. and Elisabeth A. Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Adjunct Professor of Neurology at the Boston University School of Medicine, and Senior Director of Harvard Project Zero” (Gardner bio, Multiple Intelligences and Education, MI Theory, and Project Zero). As director of Project Zero, it provided and environment that Gardner could begin the exploration of human cognition (Multiple Intelligences and Education). Project Zero colleagues have been designing assessment and the use of multiple intelligences (MI) to realize more personalized curriculum, instruction, and teaching methods; and the quality of crossing traditional boundaries between academic disciplines or schools of thought in education (Gardner bio). MI theories offer tools to educators that will allow more people to master learning in an effective way and to help people “achieve their potential at the workplace, in occupations, and in the service of the wider world” (Gardner papers).
Learning styles are how individuals approach learning new concepts based on their strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Acquiring and being aware of your learning styles is beneficial to accurately processing information that could be used for intellectual growth. Furthermore, learning styles are a part of how humans function and receive information from their world, so not being properly informed about this concept could bloom confusion, dysfunction, and chaos in society. Each learning style has a different goal and approach in interpreting information based on each individual’s abilities and should be regarded as being such. The objective of learning is to understand information intended to be learned. According to Brown (2000) learning styles is defined as the manner in which individuals perceive and process information in learning situations" (Journal of Studies in Education, 2012). Depending on one 's perspective, preferred learning styles help defined in multiple ways to get the most out of any learning or teaching experience. There are several ways to evaluate a person’s learning style, preference, and strategies that may be different from one person to the next. This paper will review the learning styles and strategies, and compare them to the identified preferred learning style and strategies by using the Vark Analysis.
“A learning style is a way of learning and refers to the way that you learn new information” (2). Most people have one preferred learning style and perform to a lesser standard when learning in a different style than what they’re used to. Nowadays, children are told to take a quiz in school to determine what their preferred learning style is, but after a few years, not many of these children remember what their preferred learning style is, or even if they do, they don’t apply it to their learning.

Everybody learns in a different way and their learning styles do not always align with their teacher’s teaching style. The best way to vary how you learn and absorb information is to take many different classes. This will ensure variety among the teaching styles that you experience because no one teacher will teach in the same way as another one. Knowing your learning style is important to your success as a student regardless of the learning environment you are in.
Each person has his or her own style of learning. Learning styles include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. In the questionnaire, I learned that I am very much a visual learner. This reflection will show what I have learned about my unique learning style and how understanding learning styles of the children I teach will be helpful as I become a teacher.

Everyone has different learning styles. Learning styles are important because they help you better understand materials in classes. They are there to guide you and become a better student. That is why there is many different learning styles to suit every person. There is three different types of learning styles categorized. The first learning style is auditory. Auditory is meant for individuals that enjoy asking questions, talking and listening, as well as like to read out loud. Visual learners are more interested in charts, graphs, neat surroundings, seeing rather than hearing, and are pictured to be timid as they read to themselves rather than out loud. Finally there is the kinesthetic learning style. Kinesthetic is to touch, to feel, and usually learn by doing.
Although it is important to know one’s preferred learning style but it is not necessary. Students can perform well without knowing their preferred learning style, if they are active learners and use metacognition. Though most students have a preferred learning style, it is also true that most can adjust their learning practices to accommodate different teaching styles (Soiferman 2014).
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
