Leadership Development Plan Activities Introduction: I have summarized the list of topics I have learned and activities performed based on my leadership development plan for the development of my leadership qualities, characteristics and skills in the areas of time management, self-control and innovating new ideas. I have explained below that how these learning activities will be helpful for my career in the future and also in my personal life as well. Time Management: I learnt that time management acts as a tool to reduce stress at the workplace and in one’s personal life. Effective time management deals with goal setting, prioritization, managing interruptions, procrastination and scheduling. In order to effectively manage the time, I …show more content…
A “to do” list is also helpful in maintaining the tasks marked with priorities and execute those. Personal planning tools like electronic planners freed my mind to focus on my priorities. I kept things organized and scheduled my time appropriately using time log and was committed to the things I want to do. I planned to take most challenging tasks when I had the most energy to be productive. I delegated some of the work that I don’t have the appropriate skills to the person who had the right skill for the task, this freed up some of my time so that I can focus on the task that requires my expertise. If the task requires my expertise and it seems overwhelming, then I broke down the task to small segments that required less time commitment. This helped me stop procrastinating. Managing my interruptions helped me a lot for effective time management, when using telephones, I stay focused on the reason for the call and before attending the meeting I learnt the purpose of the meeting in advance, arrived on time and stick to the agenda during the meeting. Having a specific time assigned for checking email assisted me to use the time …show more content…
I should be flexible and believe in me. I should trust myself that I’m a creative person and can generate ideas and positive reinforcement helps me perform better. I learnt that standard idea-generation techniques concentrate on combining or adapting existing ideas to generate ideas. This can certainly generate results. These approaches push my mind to forge new connections, think differently and consider new perspectives. In order to implement innovative ideas I have to break my thought patterns where sometimes I may get stuck in certain thinking patterns. In order to answer that, I must Challenge assumptions, reword the problem into different questions which will give me new insights. Expressing myself in different media will spark off different thought patterns and these new thought patterns will yield new ideas. Some of the best ideas seem to occur merely by chance. I have to actively seek stimuli from unexpected places and then see if I can use these stimuli to build a connection with my position. Some techniques I could use are Use random input, Mind map, Pick up a picture, Take an
I often feel I am short of time when I have many things to do at one time point and this is very stressful. With effective time management, I discovered many ways in which I can be successful with the management of my time and able to adjust my schedules and to lower time stress. For example, I took time to check my everyday activity and where do I spend most of my time. By careful evaluation, I realize I spent my time browsing the internet which often focus on some of the unproductive things. I started making my time productive by active focusing on important goals which included fitness, scheduling important work to less important tasks every day and slowly I effectively organized myself.
There are few methods listed in the module that helps me to manage my time effectively.
After completing this assignment I realized that my time management is very “mediocre” according to my scores on my time management quiz. I was actually very surprised because I thought that my time management was acceptable not great but at least decent. I scored 41 points on my quiz, meaning that I do need to improve my time management. Though, I am actually very close to being good, the score for good is 45 points. Time management has always been an issue for me. I plan myself on a daily basis to try to accomplish everything I must do. However sometimes even with a schedule there are certain things we have no control of. Just like the book establishes these are obstacles that I must overcome. Some of the best tips I found in the book are
Due to the increased competitive nature of young up and comers I feel that I may be limited for opportunities and advancement. Creating an in-depth leadership development plan will assist me in building upon my leadership skills and abilities. Although this leadership development plan is only a guideline, the real learning process is an ongoing journey. It’s a mark of respect and fairness to include potential leaders in decisions that have a bearing on their work and perhaps on their lives (Axner). Before you can determine how to get somewhere you have to determine where it is that you would like to go. Within my journey of leadership, I believe my mission is to remember where I have been and where I will go, while maintaining positive relationships with family and friends. To build a reputation of being dedicated to every goal I choose to pursue while having successes in both my personal and professional life while having fun in my journey finding laughter, love, and happiness with each
A leadership development plan is something that every organization needs to ensure its continued success. The plan would need to encompass multiple steps in order to cover every aspect needed in the plan. There are seven steps that need to be covered or considered when establishing the plan. These are 1) determining the best leadership style for the organization 2) identifying the current and future key leaders within the organization 3) identifying any and all leadership gaps 4) developing succession plans as people leave the organization or move up the ladder 5) developing goals for future leaders 6) developing a plan to get future leaders where they need to be in the organization 7) developing a retention plan for all leaders inside the organization.
According to Bevines (2013), time scrutiny is getting worse, and it will continue to, unless the problem is addressed as an organization as a whole issue, rather than an individual problem. Having the right system, using a to-do-list, and organizing tasks are all great things to do; however, we live in a time where everything is moving fast, and that interruptions and unforeseen events are inevitable, making it difficult to keep up with everything (Bregman, 2012). According to Bregman (2012), “For that reason, choosing what we are going to ignore may well represent the most important, most strategic time-management decision of all” (para.1). Research suggests that time management behavior is often prevalent due to what we perceive as control of time, job satisfaction, and health, as well as, causes and results of stress (Claessens, Eerde, Christel, & Roe, 2007). The problem is the majority of people do not manage their time properly. While time management training is great for helping to guide use of time, it does not automatically result in better performance. Time management training will not change behavior without practicing: self-management, time management techniques, and setting goals.
In Forsyth (2003), time management is about working actively to create efficiency and effectiveness in a way that makes achieving your target more likely. Good effective time management is a core skill, a differentiating factor which allows you to have an edge over other people (Williams & Cooper 2002). Time management is not optional; it is something that everyone has to acquire in order to work effectively, to achieve work-life balance and most importantly helping us to stay focus. Everyone practices time management to some degree; the only question is how well they do it and how it affects what they do (Hawkins 1996).
Over this summer, I realised that every seconds count and there are moments where it is going to be really hard. Concerning my time management, I plan to classify each of my daily activities into 4 different categories which are the following: “Important and Urgent”, “Important but Not Urgent”, “Not Important and Not Urgent”, “Not Important but Urgent”. I think that if I plan wisely I will be able to actually manage my time in a very nice way.
Time management skills develop over time and not all methods work for everyone. For instance, some students may need visual methods such as schedules or calendars they can post on their walls or doors to keep track of their time. Others may use computer programs that alert them of tasks and events. The objective is to find a tool that works for students. “Time management includes setting goals, meeting deadlines, using time management aids such as list making, coping with change, making plans, and effectively organizing one's time ( Roberts and et al, 2006).” (Nadinloyi, 2013) When analyzing time spent on activities, students should start by writing down activities and dates. For example, writing down tests dates, homework assignments and project due dates is a great way to keep up on school work. Students who make plans to complete activities are more likely to stay
