As adolescents transition between elementary and middle school they are certain to struggle with making decisions that affect their academic progress and personal life. Outside factors such as peer socialization plays an important role in how adolescents manage time and transition between childhood and adulthood. Middle school students are more likely to challenge authority and value their peer opinions more than adults, which sometimes lead to bad decisions. School counselors play a very important role in teaching students how to be responsible for their actions. Providing students with organization tools and time management strategies will help them to identify productive and unproductive behaviors. School counselors are required to …show more content…
In order for stakeholders and principals to approve programs that promote academic achievement and closing the gap, school counselors must account for the needs of programs. For example, school counselors could review students’ school records from previous years and identify students who fail assessments and meet with them individually to see if they struggle with organization and managing time. “Studies demonstrate that time management skills can be trained. Given the relationship between time management and academic achievement the use of such training programs could feasibly result in improvements in academic achievement, particularly among students who are poor time managers.” (Nadinloyi, 2013) The goal of the lesson is to help students balance time for school as well as have time for after school activities and socializing with …show more content…
Time management skills develop over time and not all methods work for everyone. For instance, some students may need visual methods such as schedules or calendars they can post on their walls or doors to keep track of their time. Others may use computer programs that alert them of tasks and events. The objective is to find a tool that works for students. “Time management includes setting goals, meeting deadlines, using time management aids such as list making, coping with change, making plans, and effectively organizing one's time ( Roberts and et al, 2006).” (Nadinloyi, 2013) When analyzing time spent on activities, students should start by writing down activities and dates. For example, writing down tests dates, homework assignments and project due dates is a great way to keep up on school work. Students who make plans to complete activities are more likely to stay
Scheduling and planning are necessary to be successful as a working student. Setting time aside for school assignments is a priority, but it is also important to build in personal time for you, your family, and friends (Blais & Hayes, 2011). S...

HS 43 Term Paper 4 Core functions of a Substance Abuse Counselor By Roslyn Smith Introduction This paper will discuss the following 4 Core Functions of a Counselor: Case Management, Client Education, Crisis Intervention, Referral and their primary purposes. School counseling has evolved over the years into a significant component of the educational system. School counselors are taking on new roles in schools as leaders, working with “school administration and staff in developing student attitudes and behavior which are necessary to maintain proper control, acceptable standards of self-discipline and a suitable learning environment within the school” (Secondary School Counselor 2012). Counselors work in “diverse community settings designed to provide a variety of counseling, rehabilitation, and support services” (Counselors, 2010). When working in a school district as a counselor, you can either be an elementary school counselor, middle school counselor or a high school counselor. This essays explores a recent interview with a high school counselor.
There are several school-level processes that may affect student outcomes either as direct effects of instructional practice or indirectly through support of students’ social-psychological needs (Rowan, B., Chiang, F.-S., Miller, R. J., 1996).
Counselors have large shoes to fill. They not only administer assessments, but are also involved in group counseling, individual counseling, and have to plan and implement comprehensive school guidance programs. A counselor must know and be competent in all realms of their position. School counselors work with all children, including children with disabilities in various settings within the school (Villalba, Latus, Hamilton, & Kendrick (2005 p 449). As stated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), school counseling services must be made available to all students in special education programs as part of their right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) (Bowen & Glenn, 1998; Clark, 1998). School counselors are to take on this role in the educational and personal-social well being of students in special education programs. Federal law does require that children, who receive special education services, and do not display appropriate behavior have a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) team (Villalba, Latus, Hamilton, & Kendrick (2005) p 449). This team constructs a BIP. Since counselors should be active on the FBA team, there is a need here that must be addressed because this article defines a lack of knowledge present with practicing counselors. With that, counselors do receive relevant training throughout their program. There are only so many classes and hours of instruction that the pre-counselors receive. The curriculum that is generated encompasses what counselors need, but could their be a few gaps and missing pieces? This study was conducted to determine counselors awareness, knowledge, and role in the Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) process (Villalba, Latus, Hamilton, & Ken...
On any given day, my time regardless of how planned it is by making lists can be thrown off track due to usually a sick child/pet. No matter how hard I try, I know my kids will get sick and they will expect me to take care of. Since I cannot usually control when that will happen, it’s important that I take advantage of what I can control, such looking ahead at assignments that will need my attention to plan adequate time to complete assignments a head of time, instead of waiting till the last minute. When I know what to expect I can make plans. Another
This letter seeks to give an overview of the problem of time management among college students who are the target audience in this paper. The paper also highlights on the probable solutions ascribed to it. It also seeks to identify a simple three part model that capsulate a viable solution to this problem if followed to the latter.
Young adolescents can be described as ages 10-15 years old, but it is also considered that adolescence continues until the age of 25. During this time in an adolescent’s life there are many internal and external factors that affect the development of each individual. The influence that an adolescent’s peers, parents, and community have on them can be conflicting and therefore cause stress. Trying to meet the expectations of others during a time where one is going through so many forms of physical, psychological, and cognitive development can be trying for a middle school aged student. They are expected to focus on their education and the expectation of other outside influences while their bodies are growing and developing into an adult body. When development happens differently for these kids it can affect their psychological development if they focus too much on how fast, or slow they are developing in comparison to their peers. Some adolescents may let their peers influence their behaviors creating a problem with how they interact with others, or how they view themselves as a person. The middle school is a place where students are guided through these developmental experiences with the help of their peers, teachers, administrators, parents and community.
Another struggle that teens face in their first year of high school is time management. Teens might struggle with this because they are probably doing a school sport or other things that distracts them from doing their homework or study for tests. Teens can really start to fail school because they are so tied up in other activities and not doing their school work. It is important for teens to limit how long they do things for fun and how long they do a sport for. One way for them to
There are many different parts to time management, such as procrastination, strategy, organization, expectations and being prepared. All of them contribute equally in many ways. All of the things that we have spoken about in this paper are highly recommended. The best thing to do when it comes to time management is to set a strategy, become organized and do your best to avoid procrastination. When you manage your time make sure you include the following; studying, sleeping, eating, relaxing and other necessary things. No matter what our circumstances are, we can all use some time management skills in our lives.
At the beginning of the school year, the counselors had a scope and sequence they followed with the areas of; transitions, character and diversity, personal safety/wellness, and careers. The scope and sequence is modeled after the WCSCM’s Academic Standards for School Counseling covering the three domains of academic, personal/social, and career development. The standards help answer the question, “How are students different as a result of the school counseling program.” After each description of a lessons plans, was an explanation of each content standard which correlated with the lesson. While at my internships, I assisted with lesson planning and facilitating guidance lessons on careers, transitions or Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), as well as, groups on character development, new student groups, and diversity. The WCSCM is completely embedded in the counseling programs at both of the districts I worked
Time management is not a new idea and many methods have been proposed regarding the best way to handle time management issues for business students. These suggestions can often be quite simple, such as writing down lists of things to do in order to support people in making good use of their time for work or recreational purposes. When time pressures are high, planning tasks and actions does not always lead to the completion of the work. It is in recognition of this that time management training programs have been designed, aiming to give an insight into the time required for activities, ways to make time plans, and increasing the efficiency of people by teaching them how to plan properly, how to prioritize tasks, and how to handle unexpected tasks. This is increasingly easy, particularly for students, as “books, articles, and time management training programs that were initially developed for managers have been made available to everyone”.(Claessens, Brigitte J.C. 2004).
Guidance counseling, also called school counseling, has evolved over the years into an important part of the education system. Counselors are now taking on new roles in schools as leaders so much so that the ways in which counseling is being implemented has become a much talked about topic in schools. The effectiveness of counseling in schools is looked at by the education system more frequently than it was in the past. Though all school counselors must follow a national model for counseling, the roles and functions of counselors at various levels in the school system are different, however, school counselors at all levels of education before college are generally effective despite implications.
