How efficient time management practices as a business student can help lead to a successful business career Introduction Time management is not a new idea and many methods have been proposed regarding the best way to handle time management issues for business students. These suggestions can often be quite simple, such as writing down lists of things to do in order to support people in making good use of their time for work or recreational purposes. When time pressures are high, planning tasks and actions does not always lead to the completion of the work. It is in recognition of this that time management training programs have been designed, aiming to give an insight into the time required for activities, ways to make time plans, and increasing the efficiency of people by teaching them how to plan properly, how to prioritize tasks, and how to handle unexpected tasks. This is increasingly easy, particularly for students, as “books, articles, and time management training programs that were initially developed for managers have been made available to everyone”.(Claessens, Brigitte J.C. 2004). (Claessens, Brigitte J.C.2004). adds that time “cannot be managed, because time is an invariable factor. Only the way a person deals with time can be”. During this time, students learn that without time management skills that they learn within the academic structure it would be very difficult for them to be able to proceed into the working world without basic found skills having penitent consequences if not adhered to. During many classes and lectures within the academic world, lecturers and class leaders explain and maintain morals and practises that they developed and mastered during their time of entering the world of work, and ensure their aptitude and competence is inflicted and understood by their students. By ensuring these skills are shown by members of a higher rank, they are influencing and encouraging people to have the grounds to suceed in a pressurising enviroment.

What do we know about time management? As adults we should know a lot about time management. We all strive to become the best that we can be. This alone should encourage us to learn about time management. Every aspect of our lives depends on it. If we try to plan, organize, and execute our ideas most of the time we can manage it well, but when we go the other route, and jump out there feet first, most of the time we do not do as well. This is not the case in every light, but usually it is the norm. Even as we sit in class trying to better ourselves by improving on our education, we learn that we must manage time to the best of our abilities. This is not done only for school, but for our families for those of us that have children and spouses. A lot of the time, we manage to get everything done and leave ourselves out in the cold when it comes to making time for ourselves. If it is not our job or school we are trying to meet someone else's needs.

PMBOK guide defines TM as the “Use of available time and your own productivity along with the appropriate planning and management of the project schedule” highlighting the link between Time Management and productivity and its closely knit relationship to scope and cost areas. Max Wideman presents a wider definition for TM as the “function required to maintain appropriate allocation of time to the overall conduct of the project through the successive stages of its natural life-cycle, by means of the processes of time planning, time estimating, time scheduling, and schedule control.” Ultimately at it’s core however, TM is about time, its planning and control during all stages of the project. A further look into Wideman’s definition of TM by means of identifying its importance throughout the entire project life-cycle (Initiation, planning, execution, controlling and close-out) is required. It is hoped that by analysing how TM tools and techniques can positively and negatively effect the different stages of the Project life cycle a better understanding of productivity, TM and project success will result.
