A leadership development plan is something that every organization needs to ensure its continued success. The plan would need to encompass multiple steps in order to cover every aspect needed in the plan. There are seven steps that need to be covered or considered when establishing the plan. These are 1) determining the best leadership style for the organization 2) identifying the current and future key leaders within the organization 3) identifying any and all leadership gaps 4) developing succession plans as people leave the organization or move up the ladder 5) developing goals for future leaders 6) developing a plan to get future leaders where they need to be in the organization 7) developing a retention plan for all leaders inside the organization.
Following the steps only goes so far and defining the elements of the plan is essential for success as well. These elements would include: 1) recruitment to find talent 2) assessments to evaluate how the leadership is doing in their jobs 3) performance management to make changes as necessary to the plan 4) succession planning to eliminate gaps 5) career planning to help develop the leader for their next position 6) development of leaders to fill the gaps.

Once they see that they are not just a number but a valued member of the team, they will become motivated to work harder and put their best foot forward to ensure the organizations success. The elements are a key part of making them feel wanted and needed, which creates a positive work environment. People want to work for this type of organization. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. In the Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner found similar patterns and actions of leadership that created the essentials to achieve success. As Schermerhorn states in Management planning, organizing, leading, and controlling are the tools needed by managers to accomplish performance goals. It is crucial that managers be able to recognize and act upon problems or opportunities as they arise. Planning is perhaps the cornerstone of the four processes. All good processes were at some point given great detail so as to anticipate possible problems and solutions to those problems. When the Honda Motor Company decided it needed to refine its inventory they didn't just jump at the first idea that was proposed; they first set their objectives and discussed ways to meet those objectives. After giving careful consideration to processes and the streamlining of those processes human error rose as the top need for change. Sounds simple you might respond; in reality it is much more complicated.

If the organization succeeds then the employees also succeeds. Employees must see the bigger picture and must feel that they are part of the organization and not just a one man show.
The leadership challenge is all about how leaders mobilize others to make great things happen in an organization (Kouzes &Posner, 2012). It is based off the leader’s practices and how they work together as a team to innovate, challenge and reward others in any given situation. It’s about getting others to follow the leader and tag along on the leadership journey. There are five practices that Kouzes and Posner discuss in the book and they are as follows: model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encouraging the heart. These five practices are what happens when leaders engage with their team and great things happen (Kouzes & Posner, 2012). A leader is known for what they do within an organization.
Leadership is one of the most important facets in organizations. In most cases, leaders act with respect to organizational culture as well as the codes of conduct that determine the manner in which leaders relate with subordinates. Leadership entails the use of effective communication skills to get activities done in the workplace and to ensure that employees shelve their individual interests for the sake of their organizations’ shared targets. It is the role of leaders to ensure that consumers attain high quality products and services by making certain that members of their firms’ workforce are fully motivated to work effectively and utilize resources in an efficient manner (Bass, 22). With the increasingly sophisticated nature of the corporate world, leadership should not be based solely on the desire to control and coordinate affairs within the workplace, but leaders should also exhibit positive examples and continually monitor the changing trends in corporate governance to initiate the most relevant guidelines. Competitiveness can only be attained when leaders are in a position to set the right standards in their firms and coordinate affairs appropriately by understanding consumer and employee needs.
