It is often said that some people are born leaders. However, this may not hold true for me. My first notes on leadership were taken during my childhood days. I grew up observing my best friend’s mother multi task her role of a CEO, a wife, a daughter-in-law and a mother. I looked for characteristics that facilitated her to perform these tasks with an unconditional ease. In this process, I learned valuable lessons which helped overcome my own personal setbacks that I faced during my academic years and much later; when I was managing my father’s travel company at a young age.
My career as a travel professional had only just begun; when I discovered that working for the environment was in fact, a natural calling that I was destined to follow. I took what many called a professional risk, but it paid off eventually and I was offered the position of Project Manager at Mountain Cleaners; a waste management NGO based in Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh). This has been one of the best decisions of my life, but also one, where my true leadership skills were put to test.
Soon after I joined Mountain Cleaners, our team decided to scale up and an urban waste management model in Dehradun (the capital of Uttarakhand) was in the pipeline. However, without warning, the challenges of working in a male dominated society started presenting itself. Jodie Underhill, the founder and I faced constant gender bias by a partner of the NGO. It began to hinder even the day to day operations and ultimately it was evident that we could no longer continue.

My work experience has provided an enriching “on the job” training on important management topics like project management, finance, human resource and marketing. Nevertheless, these skills have not reached their highest potential and need structure. I sincerely believe that the IMRE MBA Program will provide insight on a wide range of management topics, which in turn will influence my leadership skills.
After working non-stop for over six years, I understand the value of academics much more today. I like taking initiatives and foresee myself as a pro-active student who is not hesitant to ask questions and is prepared to go the extra mile. My prime motivation is not simply to excel in academics, but to make the most of the learning experience offered by the IMRE MBA program at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.
Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
A leadership theory is a clarification of some features of leadership; theories have practical importance as they are being used for better understanding, anticipating, and controlling successful leadership. Hence, the main principle of any theory is to inform practice(Lussier and Achua 2009). Leadership theories could be classified into eight main categories: Great man, trait, behavioral, contingency, Situational, Participative, Relationship , management (Cherry 2010).
Leadership is strength. Though it is strength, what makes a leader? Is a leader someone who is in front of the line in the game ‘follow the leader’? Technically yes because that is their name in the game, but this essay isn’t about a game. It is about reality. Is a leader made up of a variety of skills, talents, morals, and values? Or perhaps a leader is someone who tells people what to do? Or maybe a leader is someone who can make a difference? To an extent, a leader is built up of all of those possibilities. The idea of what’s morally right and wrong changes within each culture whether an organizational culture or between individuals. However, the best leaders are the ones who do what’s right and best for the organization. During this research paper I will attempt to define the term leadership style and its concept. Moreover, I will attempt to describe three leadership styles, the development and the process one would follow to modify their leadership style. When pertaining to myself, I never saw myself as a leader but I will attempt to describe my leadership style and the advantages and disadvantage I would have in a business environment.
Since elementary school I have been in Celina's Boy Scout Troop 69. Starting as a Tiger cub and after many years eventually becoming a Boy Scout. 10 years later it is my last year of being a Boy Scout and I will be aging out in April. Destiny, brought the book True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership into my life and I want to bring it into the lives of others. More specifically those who may believe they weren’t born with the characteristics or traits to become a leader or those who have not found their passion or purpose in life; their “True North.” The book, written by Bill George and co-author Peter Sims, compiles a series of interviews with 125 managers from Howard Schultz of Starbuck’s to Dan Vasella of Novartis. The interviewees guide readers through their journey to become the leaders they are today; discussing their failures, successes, obstacles, personal tragedies and triumphs. The stories of each manager prove the True North’s thesis, which is no one person is born a leader and there isn’t one path to becoming a leader. The book is separated into three sections: 1) Leadership is a Journey 2) Discover Your Authentic Leadership 3) Empowering People to Lead. Before giving overviews of each section, it is important to define an authentic leader.
Leadership is not defined by position. Leadership is an extraordinary responsibility given only to those willing to exude selflessness, decisiveness, and wisdom. CSM William R. Hambrick, Jr is an accomplished leader that embodies the values, attributes, and competencies that I aspire to convey to my subordinates. The impact that CSM Hambrick has had on my career and leadership philosophy is immeasurable. His far-reaching legacy is one of confidence, sound judgment, and empathy.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.

Leadership is an art of influencing thoughts and activities of followers for the achievement of established goals and standards. A good leader influences the followers in such a way that they put more effort for the accomplishment of organizational goals and objectives. The impact of transactional and transformational leadership styles on job satisfaction and job commitment of education sector of Pakistan is observed. The result of study has shown that both leadership styles have effect on job satisfaction and job commitment. Transactional and transformational leadership styles play a vital role in every organization with respect to job satisfaction and commitment. What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
When we work together in a team, or in a broader sense as a society, the leader takes on the most important role. It is the leader that helps prioritize activities and direct people’s thought process in the right direction. They are the ones who have the ability to bring the group together as a whole. Because of this, not anyone can be a leader. Only people with certain qualities and abilities are able to fill this role. So what makes a good leader? There is a defined path and specific characteristics that makes someone a good leader.
One of the biggest problems for Americans right now is the direction in which our country is headed due to poor leadership from our government. This problem has been affecting the American people deeply over the last few years and is only going to get worse. The effects of this poor leadership are the the growing debt in our country, poor health care regulations causing high premiums and forcing punishments upon people who self pay, illegal immigrants at an all time high, not enough money spent for education, and terrorist groups causing fear to Americans. These problems have been caused by the recent politicians we have elected for not only president but all of the branches of government. The best solutions to fix these problems are electing new government officials and a new president that will make changes and fix the problems that need fixing. The other alternative solutions would be the American people taking action and making the government realize that we want change. These problems have to be addressed now because the longer they are put on hold the worse the problems could be become.
When in a leadership role, it is important to consider both the task and relationship aspects of a situation. Both of these aspects are essential in order to achieve the goal successfully. Task aspects are more or less directly related to achieving the end goal. It incorporates the actions required from a leader’s followers in order to achieve the desired results. It is much more geared towards performance than the relationship aspects are. Looking at the relationship side of leadership, it focuses more so on the followers and their well-being. A leader who is more relationship oriented will spend more time talking to their followers and trying to understand how to motivate them. They try to make more of a personal connection than task-oriented leaders do.
Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions. This paper states my points in which I duly believe, justifies the importance of an outstanding leader in any organization.
