Individuals rarely recall the instant their passion became all consuming; however, that unmistakable juncture is more prominent than any other life event I experienced. While camping in Pine Creek Gorge, history captivated me with a fervent and an intrinsic obligation to immerse myself within it. Upon cycling the Pine Creek Rail Trail, I stopped for a moment to absorb a magnificent site. A river flowed before me, and I was instantaneously transported two hundred years through time. A canoe slowly made its way towards me, two Native Americans, its passengers. I became transfixed in that moment where the past intermingled with the present. As a result of this moment I understood my obligation to research and preserve Pennsylvania’s abundant history. In realizing this, I recognized that pursuing an internship at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission as the only feasible approach. I believe an internship with the Keystone Summer Internship Program will complement my passion and enhance my ability to bring Pennsylvania’s history to the public. As my interest in public history developed, I understood the significance of the service your organization provides to the residents of Pennsylvania, and demonstrates the prominence of history outside of the classroom sphere. This is perhaps the most important aspect of history due to its time sensitive nature. I take pleasure in sharing my love for history with others and if the past were no longer available for others to experience, history would simply be stories collected from a past generation and subject to forgetfulness. Conducting my internship at the State Historic Preservation Office offers me the opportunity to preserve Pennsylvania’s history.
