1. The importance of the study of world history to me personally as an American is very significant because I hope to find a career where I will work with many diverse people and I not only want to know them, but I want to have an understanding of where they came from in order to associate with them better. Another reason is that an American can be from any culture from around the world. Americans aren’t any certain race or religion, so we have to understand our fellow citizens just as they need to understand us. I was in definite need of a course like this because before I started taking this class I had no idea of the simple concept of the different beliefs between Hinduism and Judaism. I had heard of the different religions vaguely in high school, but was never actually taught about them. I didn’t even know that Jews did not eat pig because they thought it was a descendant of the devil. If I weren’t to know that, somewhere down the road I might have offered one of my Jewish friends a ham sandwich and that would have been a very embarrassing situation. I now believe that I am a better informed American about fellow man in other parts of the world, but I still hope to learn more about them because I feel that we have only scratched the surface in class. I now know about many different religions such as: Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, and even more about my own religion Christianity. Although I know what they believe and how they came about their religious freedom, I hope to learn about how they celebrate and worship their religions and maybe to see how their cultures are influenced by them. Such as if there are certain holidays where they might get out of work, or how the people of different religions react towards each other and their holidays. I now realize that because I am an American and my country is a super power, that I do not have a right to think that my religion or culture is more important than anyone else’s. I must respect their beliefs just as they respect mine. I bet if you were to ask anyone from any culture what Christmas was, they would know automatically that it is a Christian holiday. And because of this I think that I should know what Hanukkah is, or who the Buddha was and what he represented.
Nathaniel Hawthorne has always been [caracterizado] for using symbols and ambiguity on all of his stories. This is the case in “The Minister’s Black Veil” where he introduces the story of Minister Hooper, a religious man that starts wearing a black veil on his face until the day he dies. While re reading the Ministers Black Veil it is impossible just to come up with one conclusion of the motives why Minister Hooper puts on the veil. Since Hawthorne uses the act of ambiguity in this parable for the reader to come to their own conclusion, there are a significant amount of interpretations of the Minister’s black veil. The reader becomes acquainted with the protagonist at the crucial moment of his life, the moment in which he decides to wear a black veil on his face. But every reader encounters the same question, why did Minister Hooper put on the veil?
I would have never thought a person would wear a veil to try and cover their face because they are ashamed of what they did. I found it really interesting how he did not share why he had the veil, he made it sound mysterious which made the story much more interesting. However, Spain lost the territory to French setters, who called the area New France. After the 7 Year’s War Spain regained Louisiana. During this time, the port city of New Orleans grew to become a major trade center in North America. Through Pinckney’s Treaty in 1795, the United States gained permission to use New Orleans for trade as well as navigate the Mississppi River, which was crucial to westward expansion. By the year 1800, America’s South and frontier fairly depended on the use of New Orleans for successful trade. Changes came about with The Treaty of San Idelfonso in 1800, in which Spain transferred the Louisiana Territory back to France. Napoleon, in 1801, sent troops to secure New Orleans, which sent a slight panic into the U.S.. President Jefferson already knew the need for America to secure New Orleans as its own and saw his opportunity to not only ensure American trade but also to establish his dream of an Empire of Liberty, essentially an expanding America.
Have you ever wondered why there are minister’s that wear veils? Especially black veils! In my essay I will be arguing about why I conjecture Mr. Hooper wears the black veil. Mr. Hooper is a character from the story ‘’The Ministers Black Veil’’. I’ll be explaining all of my observations on why he wears the veil, and what precipitated Mr. Hooper to convey everyone’s sins.
In the beginning of the story the veil received a lot of controversy and negative feedback from the townspeople; however, when the veiled minister goes to a funeral only brief and neutral conversations pass between the mourners. Positive references toward the veil came only from the ministers optimistic fiancee. Instead of gossiping with townspeople, his fiancee went to the source of the controversy.
In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Minister’s Black Veil, the veil poses as a cover up for the sins that the minister has done in his life. For the minister, wearing the veil seems to be the right thing to do because he is ashamed of the sins that he have committed, and wants to let the world know that he has done a terrible deed. To the minister, everyone in the church should be wearing a black veil, but they don’t instead the put on a mask which covers up what they are hiding. The veil that Mr. Hooper is wearing frightens everyone and caused uneasiness. This could be a sign of guilty, and hypocrisy that kicks in on the congregation. First, we have the question of why the minister wore the veil and what it meant. In the doctrine of Original Sin, it states that every single person is born a sinner, and the only way to salvation is by acknowledging that sin. "I look around me, and, lo! The theme in this story is that people should be less concerned of others sins and attend to redemption for their own sins. The black veil symbolized sin including that no one is perfect. Additionally , each of us hide behind a symbolic veil to hide our sins. It was not until the end of the story when Mr.Hooper dies and he then sees that the people are all wearing black veils to cover their secret sin or sorrow. As Mr. Hooper goes on to preach about “secret sins” and that humans try to hide there’s from one another, each member of the congregation from “the most innocent girl” to “the man of hardened breasts” begins to feel “as if the preacher had crept upon them, behind his awful veil, and discovered their hoarded iniquity of deed or thought.” It upset the towns’ people that he wears this black cloth without any explanation for it, even though no one actually asks him. The community is not afraid of this piece of cloth itself, but that they are afraid of what the cloth must symbolizes. Mr. Hooper chooses to wear the veil to signify the sins and secrets that we try to hide from one another, as well as ourselves. We hide this sin from the people that we love and refuse to share it to the people were closes to. Going to school with many different cultures is exciting. I get to learn about cultures I have no clue about, such as Buddhism, Chinese, even Japanese. Going to a school that is very diverse makes me able to talk to others and learn about their cultures, and maybe even make friends with people I thought I would never make friends with. It also goes to show that everyone was not born the same, and no matter what a person’s differences are we should respect them and have no problem conversing with them. As with me, I consider myself a diverse person. My mom is Irish/American and my dad is Lebanese, so coming from a family where two cultures come together is really interesting. We celebrate Ramadan which is the fasting during the holy month for Islam, and we also celebrate Christmas, the birth of Christ in Christianity. Getting the best of both worlds is really intriguing, because I can celebrate two totally different holidays from two different religions and now how to respect both. I know for a fact that I do bring diversity to University of Toledo because not most people know an American-Lebanese.
Also, how other cultures have had a phenomenal impact on how I view everyday situations and how I draw conclusions, whether it’s about an ethnic group, my own and others or about hot topics in the news. Before this class I did not realize cultural relativism. I really was ethnocentric because I never took the time to evaluate other people’s cultures independently of my own. While I think it is normal for people to judge their peers, coworkers, etc. based on their experiences I also feel it would be beneficial for all of us to take the time to try and understand the sociological point of view of others that are not familiar to us or view things very different from us. The tools I have learned in this class seems to have made me a better listener and emphasizer because I have caught myself listening to people just to hear them and not just to respond. The change in my outlook about being intertwined in society has improved my communication skills at work and at
