This semester I had the opportunity to intern for Rockhill Elementary school through the Spectrum Education program. I was the first student to intern at this location therefore, I did not know what to expect from this internship site. After meeting with the school principal for the first time, I learned that Rockhill had some big dreams to recreate a sensory room that would benefit all children at the school. As an intern, it became my job to create a plan of action for this sensory room. Once the work in this space was completed, I would instruct teachers on how to use the sensory room and work with Rockhill students in the space. The purpose of this sensory room was to create a calming space for Rockhill students so that they may stimulate …show more content…
This sensory room was tied to a large financial cost, and as a public school, Rockhill did not have the funds or manpower to make it happen. This financial burden became the biggest obstacle in the timeline of creating a sensory room at Rockhill. It soon became clear that the first project I would have to accomplish as an intern was to raise money for the materials that were needed to upgrade the room. In an attempt to raise money, I created a GoFundMe page and set up a fundraiser night at Chipotle. After fundraising attempts which took a few months, I was able to raise $500 for the sensory room from a donation and the fundraising night at Chipotle. Next, I began attempting to transform the room first by requesting a change of wall paint color to a calming blue. I also planned to cover the fluorescent lighting in the room with light covers and add curtains to the windows to create a better atmosphere. Another goal I had for this sensory room was to separate the room into sections where each section focused on a specific sense. For example, a relaxation corner, and space which focused only on touch, etc. Before I could make any of these changes, it was necessary to declutter and rearrange the
“The environment you grow up in shapes who you are” asserted Genie Pedagogos. It was a brisk winters morning at the Methodist Ladies College, as Genie reflected on the life that one friend described as “More than amazing”. Pedagogos, from a very young age, began to understand that the environment someone grew up in shaped the person they became. After coming from an immigrant family of Greek background and being a single child, life was not always easy for her, but the environment she was provided with is the sole reason for her success in many facets of her life today. As a qualified doctor, mother, and wife, the truth behind Genie Pedagogos is that she believes in creating the right environment for all those around her regardless of their
Your final report should be a complete report of your internship experiences under the title “How I Evaluate Myself as a Future Criminal Justice Worker,” and may not exceed five typed pages. Describe the extent to which the theoretical knowledge included your course work at the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University contributed to your field practice experience during your internship. Cite at least two SHSU courses. Show what you have learned, indicate how your ideas have changed or been supported, and why. List your strengths and weaknesses and grade yourself on job performance.
Sometimes, as educators, we think that we are doing a great job with the environment we are putting children in, but it is important that we take things from the child’s perspective as well. Children need a space that conforms to their needs and can be adjusted at any time. They need to understand how to make adjustments themselves, like pulling a curtain across to create a quiet space. Educators need to put materials that have multiple uses and different areas as well. This will help their imagination to think outside the box. Keeping creativity alive will also boost child’s development. When they are given time and a space to work quietly with others, with the help of a room divider, children are learning cooperating skills that benefit everyone. But I believe the most important point in this article is to keep educators thinking about children when they design a child’s environment. Don’t forget that the most important thing that can be done to help foster the child is not set unbendable restrictions on their environment. The more flexible and adjustable an educators views may be will provide a more positive environment for the children
They have failed to appropriately arrange the room and don’t allow enough creative freedom for the children to properly and adequately express themselves. Though this centre has a good foundation for success they still have a lot of work ahead to make it a responsive environment. It is important for the environment to promote healthy learning and inclusiveness for each of the children. Incorporating more play accessories, natural light, pathways, and more private quiet places they would do much better in succeeding in having a responsive
When I first started to think about what I’m going to do for my service learning project, I wanted to learn more about deaf people and the education they are taught. I soon realized that this wasn’t broad enough and made it broader to just plain education. With this is mind it led me to Mars Hill Elementary school working with the children on math. The children were glad to have me there and loved the new perspective on the problems then what they already have. When I was working there I was focusing on how the teachers were constructing their class rooms and how the kids were responding. The teachers were teaching their children in one big group and all the kids were sitting in a circle and were shouting out the answers. I could tell these children were receiving th...
( http://www.academia.edu/). The feeling of knowing that everything we do in class will build on each child’s academic skills makes me have a deeper understanding of why my jobs so important. I always knew it was but now I have a bigger picture. We need to be flexible and look at the child what they need and how we are going integrate it into our lesson plans and being able to see how the room being set up can help the child to explore so much more and have more curiosity in how things work and how they work and why they work. There should be so much put into the centers in each part of your room that way it will increase the child’s curiosity and they will start talking more so they can continue to learn. Children are always wanting to know more. The room needs to be inviting so the children are able to see that if you are interested in the things the child is learning than the child will want more from you and they want more understanding. Knowing that play allows the child to be repetitive with new skills they have learned in the classroom they will keep on doing the same thing till they learn that they can accomplish more. Every day I work with children seeing the way the interact and play and see who is playing with others and who is not playing with
During, the observation the teacher’s science lesson was amazing with the different units of studies that the teacher added to this unit. The teacher did a thematic unit on the state of Arizona because of Arizona’s celebrating it entrance to statehood on February 14. The school that the teacher works for does an Arizona Enrichment day with different activities. This unit that the teacher taught gave the students an introduction to what they would be learning on Thursday for their Enrichment activity along with learning science at the same time. I thought this was very creative. The teacher incorporated very little technology in this lesson, she had math, reading, social studies, and writing in this lesson on living and nonliving things in Arizna0. For th...
The stimulations were really eye opening. I was able to see through the eyes of a child with a learning disability in different areas. I always understood that children who have learning disabilities learned differently, but I didn’t imagine how extreme the difference could be. The problems were hard for me and became frustrating. I now know firsthand how frustrating it can be for students who have learning disabilities in different areas. It’s amazing what extra time or shorter questions can do to help increase understanding. I realize that some things that come naturally to me may be extremely difficult for someone who learns differently. As a new teacher, I will make sure to teach children strategies and develop assignments that increase student understanding.
By looking at the video we can observe how various children and parents and some caregivers are interacting with each other. The whole environment was appropriately constructed and secure for all the children. The materials and the infrastructure of the school covered the necessities to be able to care for all the children present inside the classroom. We can also notice how this environment encourages and expands the feeling of helping each and every student to develop various skills. The connection between children, parents, and caretakers are essential for the appropriate education each child needs.
As an early childhood educator my job is not to simple play with children. I must plan, provide and supervise all while “playing” with my students. The classroom serves as the physical environment for the children for most of their waking hours. These classrooms need to be attractive and function effectively. Concerns for any early childhood educator should always include space, equipment and materials used, outdoor space and the daily schedule to ensure that all students are provided ample opportunities to learn and grow within a safe and secure environment.
This experience just makes more truth that there is science behind everything. Labs helped me grasp material more fully, as I manipulated it and saw its connections to my world and my life. It confirmed for me that science was anything but arbitrary. On returning back to the Elementary School setting, I am excited to hear about science kits being used, full of models and hands-on experiments for the students.
When I was a little girl, my grandma use to take care. Our schedule was simple. I’d come over before my mom went to work, we’d get a bowl of corn flakes (extra sugar), and turn on Sesame Street at 11am on PBS23. I was so amazed by all the colors and characters that I didn’t even realize that I had an extensive vocabulary for a child that hadn’t been to school yet. Cornflakes and Sesame became our thing.
The quarter has finally come to an end, and with that, I close out my internship and this class that went along with it. It was a great experience and I leave equipped with a new set of skills that are preparing me for the world ahead. As I write this reflection paper, I think back to the very first week when I set up two goals for myself to focus on and hope to achieve throughout the following weeks. My first goal was to develop a better understanding of myself within the work place, and my second was to develop a strong network to jumpstart my career. Both of my goals were achieved, however, I don’t feel that either of my goals will ever be complete. I believe that you can always formulate a better understanding of yourself, and you can always network to develop a stronger tree of connections. I know for a fact, however, that I reached satisfaction with both of my goals at this internship at MKI and know whole-heartedly that I did everything in my power to exhaust my resources in
It has been a while since I started at the internship and I am really glad I decided to work here. I think the experience in this area is a good preview of my career and future. I am learning some important skills and finding out some things about myself and the tough skin I will need in order to stay in the area of juvenile support.
During the course of time, I’ve learned many useful things that have led me to be the person I want to be today. From college classes to work experiences, I now have the ability to exceed upon internship experiences that can shape my perspective on life. The purpose of this paper is to summarize, reflect, analyze, and synthesize on my internship experience at the Children’s Home of Reading-Acute Partial Hospitalization Program.
