In Bill George’s book, Discover Your True North, he describes the “Journey to Authentic Leadership” as three phases; Phase I, Preparing for leadership, Phase II, Leading, and Phase III, Generativity (George, 2015). After forty plus years of leadership positions, twenty-five years in the Marine Corps, eight years as a Manager at a nuclear generating station, and ten years as a Law Enforcement Program Manager, I have now reached George’s Phase III where I am ready to pass on my experiences and knowledge to a younger generation. In about a year, I will close out my career in law enforcement and would like to start my next chapter in life teaching or consulting. I can be considered a slow starter when it comes to education. After high school, I entered college, however, due to immaturity and a lack of focus, I soon found myself on probation. Not knowing where I was heading in life, I enlisted in the Marine Corps and quickly learned the value of an education. I now have a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice. Additionally, I have attended numerous military professional schools, such as the U.S. Army’s Advanced Military Police Officer Course, the U.S, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the FBI National Academy. Throughout my career and even today, I have learned that education is continuous no matter the age of the individual. My goal and motivation for seeking a Doctorate in Business Administration are twofold. One, to broaden my education and experience. I have learned no matter what position one holds, to be successful, he or she must understand sound business principles. Due to the reasonable cost of tuition, I will be debt free when I decide to retire from my current job, and I will be able to concentrate on my new endeavors totally. As an instructor or a consultant, I will not encounter any pressures in paying back student loans or any other debts from my educational pursuits. Another benefit that Apollos University provides is that the courses are online. This style of education is important to me because time management in my career is significant. Living in Southern California, it is very difficult to travel back and forth to work with all the traffic. There have been countless books, lectures, and and trainings, and retreats constructed around the idea of cultivating leadership in an individual. However, cultivating individuals’ ability to follow great leadership has received far less attention. Who are these people leading if each person within an organization is being trained to be a leader? The word follower has negative connotations, evoking the images of a weak, uncreative, milquetoast personality. However, Jimmy Collins, in his book, “Creative Followership: In the Shadow of Greatness”, suggests that the ability to be led brings as much creativity, consciousness, and indeed leadership to an organization or team as the leader himself.

Carter also utilized some older leadership style approaches, one being transactional. Transactional leadership focuses on the exchanges that occur between leaders and followers and at various points, his leadership could not be any more blunt at times (Northouse, 2015). Carter exchanged the ability to play with signing and obeying the contract, when the contracts were broken, he took away the ability to play. The assignment for week four is to assess and review results from the Authentic Leadership Self Assessment Questionnaire. The ALQ was created to provide a means to assess the parameters of authentic leadership and to allow for opinion on the behaviors that encompass Authentic Leadership Style (Northouse, 2013). Basically, the questionnaire and the model allows and individual to understand how followers or people perceive leadership authenticity.
Destiny, brought the book True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership into my life and I want to bring it into the lives of others. More specifically those who may believe they weren’t born with the characteristics or traits to become a leader or those who have not found their passion or purpose in life; their “True North.” The book, written by Bill George and co-author Peter Sims, compiles a series of interviews with 125 managers from Howard Schultz of Starbuck’s to Dan Vasella of Novartis. The interviewees guide readers through their journey to become the leaders they are today; discussing their failures, successes, obstacles, personal tragedies and triumphs. The stories of each manager prove the True North’s thesis, which is no one person is born a leader and there isn’t one path to becoming a leader. The book is separated into three sections: 1) Leadership is a Journey 2) Discover Your Authentic Leadership 3) Empowering People to Lead. Before giving overviews of each section, it is important to define an authentic leader.
The book called Spiritual Leadership, by Henry and Richard Blackaby is about the being a leader. That the leader has a challenges that we have to face every day. It is also about being learn how to help other and lead them to the Lord.

Leadership can be shown through any person in any type of situation. In a classroom discussion, on the playing field, or in public a sign of a leader is evident. A person is born a leader. Certain humans know what to do when the time calls for it. Many people in positions can be entitled a leader such as basketball players. Even a famous movie star can be given this title. These people are not true leaders. True leaders are the belaboring teachers and the intellectual speakers. These are the people who show that leadership is an action, not a position.

Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
The old system of management has undergone many changes within the last century. An employee once performed the assigned job duties during the allotted hours and then went home. Now employees are encouraged to grow, give input, and to contribute for the good of the organization. There is a plethora of information for leaders to learn why and how to grow personally thus allowing the organization to grow as well. This new emerging leader is a transformational leader.
