Internships may be paid or unpaid positions with menial or skilled responsibilities. When looking at internships it is important to be involved with a successful internship program. What are the best practices used by a business to create a positive internship program and who benefits from these internship programs? The opportunities a student can encounter during an internship can teach you numerous beneficial skills and expose you to opportunities you would not receive during the university experience. Low pay, menial task assignments, and wasting the majority of your workday should not be what you expect or accept in an internship that you want to be an effective tool in your educational process.
The majority of organizations that offer internship programs desire to have successful programs that benefit both the organization and the student. In the article “10 Best Practices for Business Student Internships” found in the academic journal, Strategic Finance, authors Kurt Reding and David O’Bryan discuss 10 practices that organizations should follow in order to have successful internships and the benefits to those involved in the program. Reding and O’Bryan evaluated feedback from previous students involved in internship programs and these organizations themselves to decide the most important factors that companies should implement in order to benefit the company and the student during the process. These practices create a strong foundation for companies to follow and for students to look for when searching for a program.
The first practice is to establish a program with a defined purpose. The companies purpose may be to find prospective, full-time employees once they graduate, temporary employees to fill a company’s immediate ne...

All of the practices are believed to be the steps that allow an organization to have a successful internship program. When a program is successful the organization, the intern, the university, and the community will all benefit. “High quality programs enable bright students to gain practical knowledge and skills that universities can’t provide and thus contribute greatly to the professional development of future business leaders (Reding & O’Bryan, p. 48). At the end of the experience the intern should be better prepared for a career with an organization in their filed. The internship should be a positive experience that validates the choices the student has made in their education to this point.

Apart from the experience I have gained at LT Security Inc., my various internship positions have also exposed me to eye-opening responsibilities. For example, as a marketing intern at MySelf New York, I engaged in organized discussions with customers as well as colleagues in the pursuit of better promotional and marketing strategies. I have also gained experience with other matters such as employee coaching and assistance, employee relations, communication and implementation of policies and procedures during my time at Stony Brook University as intern in arts management and at Yunnan Changji Real Estate Co. Ltd where I served as an administrative
But as my internship grew closer to the end date in early September, I began to reflect on my experiences with a “Big Four” accounting firm. After only three months, I had gained exposure to a handful of very different, and very large client work and worked with some very intelligent individuals throughout. I had made some good friends and several acquaintances while interning at KPMG and had spent some very rewarding time helping out the local community volunteering. I had found a passion working with partnerships and forming client relationships.
Internships completed by students in certain degree programs are quite popular in most colleges and universities. An internship is used so classroom based learning in a degree program can be applied to practical situations in the real world (Jordan, Burns, Bedard & Barringer, 2007). When students are placed with an agency, there is a real possibility that a portion of students will witness actions they believe is unethical or illegal. During a study conducted within four universities, many students that participated in an internship program within the criminal justice system reported that they had observed behavior they suspected to be illegal behavior for a law enforcement agency. (Jordan et al. 2007). Due to this ongoing problem, colleges
A pre-practicum internship can be an extremely beneficial off campus endeavor that one can experience prior to the actual internship. The central rationale of pre-practicum is to add meaning to the educational undertakings of the student. Consequently, it facilitates tangible practices that embolden the association of theory and method. Pre-practicum affords an experiential gathering opportunity for students to relate ideas, information, and services gained in real situations to classroom discussion. It also allows students to assess the personal suitability of a prospective career choice and to develop an awareness of community services, economic underpinnings,
Some of the limitations that I felt myself come across is that as an intern I was not able to follow up with my case load as much as I would have wanted. For one, my program is outpatient community based, meaning most of my interactions were at his home with a social worker because we are not allowed to use government vehicles to make home visits. This was difficult because I was not able to gain full rapport with my client because there was always an extra set of eyes that was also interfering with the process of rapport building. My other limitation was that I was only available two days a week which made it hard for me to be there as his case manager given the fact that he was in crisis a couple of times.

These benefits combined prove to be very useful and significant to the intern because it’s a differentiator from those individuals who did not have an internship.
