Influence of culture on daily life Most people immigrate to United states of America every day for different reasons. People from many different racial and ethnic backgrounds live in a large country like the United States. Because of cultural differences and various prejudices, it can be difficult for individuals from one background to interact with individuals from another background. Fortunately, a line of research, grounded in contact theory and conducted by sociologists and social psychologists, suggests that interaction among individuals from different backgrounds can indeed help overcome tensions arising from their different cultures and any prejudices they may hold ( Sociology Barkan) Culture influences not only language but the gestures we use when we interact, how far apart we stand from each other when we talk, and the values we consider most important for our children to learn, to name just a few. Without culture, we could not have a society. ( Barkan Page-) culture can influence our daily life in different ways.

The place where I grew up reflects a huge gap between gender roles especially when it comes to marriage. For example, most woman stays home and responsible for house hold duties such as cocking, baby sitting, cleaning house, washing clothes etc. on the other hand man is responsible for outside work suck as making money for his family. If man seen cocking or cleaning the house, people considered him as womanish therefore man doesn’t do house hold duties. Due to this cultural influence, When I came here, it was very challenging to me to accept and adopt the new culture because the way I was raised and the way people live as a couples here is different. A few years later, I realized that my wife cannot do both household duties and work 8-16 hours a day outside, I forced myself to learn how to cock, cleaning and doing laundry etc. Now I become an excellent
Justin Matos Reasoning and Analysis Paper When you come from a different country do you have trouble communicating with others? Is it hard to adapt to the new culture or stay within your own culture? Around the world, many people are rewarded for been direct and independent. Been able to take care of yourself and work well with others who are not in your culture can help you achieve great things.
“The Contact Zone”, is defined by Mary Louis Pratt as “the space in which transculturation takes place – where two different cultures meet and inform each other, often in highly asymmetrical ways.” Pratt describes what she calls ‘contact zones’ and elaborates on the pros and cons of these cultural interactions. She sees the contact zone as a place that allows people to exchange cultural ideas and break down the dividing cultural borders. When a contact zone is started, people are able to interact on new levels gaining a new perspective because they are able to collaborate with people from foreign cultures. If you are always with people of the same culture as you, you become used to hearing everything from the same perspective. With a new perspective, you can see your culture from a different point of view and reanalyze the logic behind your cultural traditions. Every ethnic/ religious/ regional/ cultural group has its high and low points, and it is just as important to learn about the low points as it is to learn about the highs. Gloria Anzaldua’s essay, “how to tame a wild tongue”, focuses on the ideas of losing an accent or native language to conform to the dominant culture.
There has been many discussions about how people try to fit in society, whether it is for music, interests in subjects, or even trying to fit in a specific culture. Groups and individuals seems to have a distinction among each other when it comes down to fitting in society and how they differ and have tensions among each other to conform to social norms. In “Making Conversation” and “The Primacy of Practice” by Kwame Anthony Appiah discusses how all cultures have similarities and differences but sometimes those differences are so different that they can not connect to another nation. Manuel Munoz in “Leave Your Name at the Border” argues how immigrants in a city are forced to act more societal and how it typically affects the diversity in
Folklores are stories that have been through many time periods. Folklore include Legends, Myths, and Fairy Tales. Legends are traditional tales handed down from earlier times and believed to have a historical basis. Myths are ancient stories dealing with supernatural beings, ancestors, or heroes. Fairy Tales are fantasy tales with legendary being and creators.
Many immigrants have closer ties to their home country. This affects the people that they talk to in America and how often the talk to people that don't speak their native language. “Dawb was already attending...High School, … early fifty percent of the student body … many of whom were Hmong.”(Yang 56). If you talk a lot with other immigrants from your home country it is most likely that you don't want to go out of your comfort zones and want to with other people that are like you. “… Compared with results from 2002, more immigrants say that they spend time with people from their birth country and have closer ties there.” (Bittle 45). You are also more likely to spend more time with them. “ It is the 1960s … The men are huddled … overhearing. French, English, and Kreyòl commingle. French, I understand. English … is from that of an American child. Kreyòl, the language of my birthplace, is a mystery. Kreyòl predominates…” (Benoit 31). Immigrants also call their family and friends back in their home country a minimum of once a week. This has increased by 12 points, 40% from 28%. It is very difficult for many of the immigrants to get to know other people that aren't from their home country. If the immigrants were to be more comfortable and know these people, than the immigrants would learn the customs.
There are two type of friendship: homophilic, friends because of same identity, or heterophilic, friends because of interest or proximity (Maxwell, 2002, p 268). Because of an influx of immigrants, Millennials are surrounded by immigrants. Along with Millennials being more optimist and open minded, the presence of a different culture sparks interest, helping form a heterophilic friendship. Because of immigration and Millennials attitudes, friendship between two different culture is plausible and doable, promoting the development of tolerant and acceptance in
Traditionally men had more power and control in the home than women. Women stay in the home to care for children and the home, while men leave the house to work for money. Education was not encouraged for females because men did not find an educated girl appealing. My grandmother, who was my primary caretaker, ensured that I learned how to cook, clean, sew, and how to accept commands in hope that one day I would become a good housewife. However, living in a land where gender roles are equal made it difficult to accept the role my grandmother hoped I would take. I learned to embrace the American culture and conform to be able to fit in with friends around me. Although initially my life decisions created a lot of conflict between my family and me, I learned to conform to society by accepting society’s norms and rejecting the norms that my family
According to Webster’s Dictionary, culture is defined as tradition or a way of life. It is also a defining principle in how we live our life and the type of people we become. The Salish Indians of the Montana and Celie, the main character of the book The Color Purple, are two examples of cultures that made them who they are. Celie is a poor, black, woman growing up in Memphis, Tennessee in the mid-twentieth century. The men have constantly put her down, through beatings and rape, for being a woman with no talent at all. Her husband’s lover comes to town and gives Celie a chance to see a culture where a woman can stand up for herself and teaches her that love is possible. The Salish on the other hand have a culture that has gone on through the ages and still is a part of each person today despite the obstacles they have had to face. Culture does shape us because from birth it is what tells us our ideals, laws, and morals that we live by each day.
According to report “The Lewis Model Explains Every Culture In The World” written by Gus Lubin, the culture is divided into three categories in terms of their behavior and the way to interact with other people. The three categories are Linear-actives, Multi-actives and Reactives. In his view, the categorization of national norms does not change significantly over time due to governments and multinational conglomerates pressure even though the development of global integration . He also tells us that it is very important to focus on the cultural roots of national behavior and divide culture into three categories. The aim of the survey is to understand how to interact with people from different cultures.
When individuals or groups from different cultures communicate, this process is called intercultural communication. The transaction process of listening and responding to people from different cultural backgrounds can be challenging. The greater the difference in culture between two people, the greater the potential of misunderstanding and mistrust. Misunderstanding and miscommunication occur between people from different cultures because of different coding rules and cultural norms, which play a major role in shaping the patterns of interaction (Jandt, 2012).
Communication, as part of an aspect in acculturation research will be examined. Studies and research of acculturation which trace back to as early as the 1930s, evidently show that acculturation is not a new concept born out of the increasing rate of immigration in recent decades, but instead, has been widely researched, though lacking in depth. It was found that there were a number of scholars who paid attention to the communication approach of acculturation, and that the choice of acculturation strategy raised little attention of the immigrants until in recent years. Communication is an essential skill for immigrants to assimilate into a new culture.
Cultural sensitivity occurs when people recognize and are aware that each country or various ethnic groups of people have their own set of experiences, beliefs, values, and language that affect their perceptions toward life. Addressing Cultural sensitivity permits people to comprehend that there are differences between cultures. Furthermore, having awareness in the differences between cultures permits a culturally competent person to communicate effectively with others that are outside of one’s realm. Some of the differences of Cultural sensitivity can be discovered while traveling outside of the country, such as through Cross-cultural sensitivity experiences. Likewise, a culture has its own norms and beliefs to how one should dress; how one should greet others, such as by referring to a significant individual by his or her first name or surname (comprehending which name should be stated first in foreign names); and/or what foods are permitted to eat or forbidden to eat or understanding what may offend a person (e.g. not accepting a home cooked meal). There are norms, taboos, cultural cues, and cultural etiquette standards that are significant to learning about one’s culture before exploring another country or while working with people who are from your country but who are part of another racial group. It takes time and patience to build a high level of Cultural sensitivity. Educating oneself with a culture’s psychology and its norms is significant toward achieving an increasing awareness toward Cultural sensitivity.
According to Hofstede’s (1980), ‘culture is the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one human group from another… culture in the sense, includes systems of values: and values are among the building blocks of culture.’ It is necessary to determine how culture impacts our communication behavior as culture directly influences our perception and understanding of the message that is transmitted from one party to another. People from different cultures encode and decode messages differently; this therefore increases the chances of misunderstanding. Intercultural communication refers to interactions between people whose cultural assumptions are so different that the communication between them is altered. Verderber, Verderber, & Sellnow, (2010).
Communities can significantly impact older individuals and their experiences of aging. The manner in which older individuals are treated throughout the world is an excellent example of this. No one culture is the same, but they all have a unique way of impacting the aging individuals that are a part of them. These ways of acting and interacting with older adults are influenced by society’s beliefs towards these aging individuals in regards to isolation, which in reality, can be quite similar cross-culturally. The Jewish community in The Center, the Tuareg in Niger and Mali, and the New England older individuals each form their own communities to combat isolation in order to have a sense of belonging and importance.
Humans have been communicating since four million years. On the other hand, the birth of culture is estimated to have taken place about 35,000 years ago. Today, both culture and communication have evolved considerably and have become interdependent of one another, to the point that communication is considered to be a product of culture. Thus, our own culture has a deep impact on our thoughts and behaviors. Since each culture has its distinct aspects, intercultural communication can be the cause of conflict and disorder. There are three main issues which are at the root of the problem of intercultural miscommunication : language as a barrier, cultural diversity and ethnocentrism. I will analyze these three notions in situations in which intercultural communication is frequent such as : the workplace, the classroom and vacation trips.
