Sofia Pennia Ela-1 11/16/16 Immigration- Language,Communication, False Hopes Imagine moving to America and dreaming about riches, an easy life, no worries, safety and freedom. I hate to break it to you but… that is not that easy. To make the transition easier, it would be beneficial to learn English. This can be accomplished by forcing oneself to communicate with other Americans in English. Another way is to embrace the American culture. Finally, lose the false hopes. The streets are not lined in gold and money doesn't grow on trees. Most immigrants have to learn a new language and a new way of life. The jobs they must take are often hard, with long hours.”(Maestro 15). For many immigrants they imagine an amazing country with no problems and low work hours. “‘There’s the assumption that when you come here you will become wealthy very fast and very easily. I have to work 12, 16 hours a day to make a living. [In my birth country] . ..they work, like, from nine until two and then go home.’” (Bittle 44) As you can tell this is not that case at all. For most immigrants it is very difficult, it's like they are starting over on a clean slate. But, to be successful you will have to start out at the bottom and live in a small cramped apartment with many people, work long hours with little pay. The internet is growing and always improving in the world. So more and more people everyday get to experience movies, but these movies and the internet are feeding them false aspirations. So when people come here they believe that they will have an easy life, even though it is the complete opposite. “‘When I came here, the first thing I imagined … the great life. When I recently arrived here, I wound up … in a two-bedroom apartment where 12 people were living… I said, ‘What have I gotten myself into?’ With time, I wound up renting another apartment. You understand that you should learn English and communicate not just with immigrants from your home country but other people from America too. Would you still want to come here? Even after hearing all of that? Many immigrants come to America not knowing this, leaving them unprepared for the difficulties that they will face. So as you can see and imagine if immigrants came over and knew these simple three things; learn the language (English), communicate with all Americans including fellow immigrants in English and get rid of all false hopes and face reality.
