LSRW skills are the four main components of language. Speaking skill always take the forefront whereas written English is always given the back stage in importance. From students’ point of view, written English is often a perfect collocation with homework, assignments and exams. Hence students tend to have a lethargic attitude towards any writing activity. The lack of competency to express ideas in written format makes them poor performers in exam. The lack of clarity in linking words in written form makes them stand with lack of precision regarding furnishing their Resume. The students never come on terms with the exact differentiation between formal writing and informal writing and hence are not able to impress the recruiters with a commendable written performance .Writing for a special purpose lacks among students that leaves them incapable at drafting content in a professional link that disappoints their performance The most important issue that hinders excellence in writing skill is the mother tongue influence which happens to be the reason for a complex feel among limited proficient learners to attempt to any personal writing that expresses their view and opinion. Academic writing and professional writing are very important in an engineering student’s life. Students fail in their career because of limited proficiency in writing skills. It is very important for an engineering student to express what he knows in his exam paper to prove his technical knowledge and expertise. Students miss on good abroad chances for career and higher studies because of lack of written communication skill. Engineering English course which is in the first year for students, is based on the LSRW concept. Even though the engineering English gives equal scope for all the four components, still student’s attitude towards writing skills is lethargic and taciturn. It is wrongly etched in the minds of L2 learners that speaking in English alone could help them in their professional life and they can avoid other components of English. “We do not write in order to be understood, we write in order to understand” (Lewis, cited by Scardamalia & Bereiter 1987). As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. In this paper I will discuss and analyze my own writing, reflecting on the ways that my writing has improved throughout the semester.
Writing has been part of my life ever since I learned how to spell my first words. As I use the writing process I had to evolve and learn grammar, orthodoxy, and punctuation. I learned all this in my language which is Spanish. The writing rules are very different in different languages and after having an idea on how to write in English, I always refer back to what I learned in my early years. As I write in English I have faced many challenges to include learning to think in English before I write. I am use to think in Spanish and therefore the words flow as a river with minimum effort on my part. I have tried to think in Spanish, translate my thoughts and then writing in English but has proven to be the most difficult process to follow. As I wrestled with the idea of writing in English and learning to think in English, my writing has become better with each assignment. As I reflect on how my writing has evolved, it is my intention to compare how the different tools and genres of writing had helped me write academically papers and how I expect to continue to better myself for mu future, even after I graduate from college.

Growing up learning and speaking English has been something that was difficult for me at first but then came easy, but that was not the case for my mother. She spent her whole life speaking Spanish, so when she decided to take English learning classes it was challenging. However, she had me to help her throughout her struggle. I helped her complete her homework and assignments. We would also go to the library to check out easy level reading books to have her read to me. If I had to chose the most important moment of my literacy development I would easily say it was my sophomore year of high school. I was in Honors World Literature class taught by high school teacher Amy Shaw. The second semester of the year we spent reading and discussing The Iliad. The way Mrs.Shaw taught this book and made us think about it combined with my love of Greek mythology gave me an immediate interest in this unit. However the many epics and epithets took away most of my enthusiasm. Later in the semester, we were each assigned a chapter, or “books” as they were called, to teach to the class. The significance of communication can be found within the context of a human existing as a social being. As a human being manages his or her life in the course of the interaction between other members of the entire society, communication is inevitable. Communication occurs through the medium of a language and it is presented in two different forms which are written and spoken (Brown & Yule, 1983: 1-10). The importance of spoken performance of a language is becoming more prominent over the written performance capability. It is because the ability to speak a language reflects a person’s personality, self image, knowledge of the world, ability to reason, skill to express thoughts in real-time (Luoma, 2004: ix). These days, due to the global trend of internationalisation, the ability to communicate in English is needed as an essential skill. Whenever the international exchange happens, the use of spoken English entails. However, it is not always an easy task for people who use English as a second language to be able to speak to the level of a native speaker. They have to perfectly understand the sound system of English, have almost instant access to proper vocabulary and be able to place words together intelligibly without hesitation. Moreover, they also have to perceive what is being said to them and need to be able to respond appropriately to acquire amiable relations or to accomplish their communicative goals (Luoma, 2004: ix). Therefore, non-native English speakers encounter these barriers and they are subject to make mistakes often. In relation to this matter, this essay argues that there are socio-cultural factors as well as linguistic factors that affect non-native speakers’ communication in English. It provides analysis of several different situations when the use of spoken English has generated miscommunication problems in regards to author’s personal experience.
