Starting off this semester, I had an idea on what I wanted to accomplish in this class. With the goals I’d set for myself, I believe I had made a huge step in the right direction. My fitness goals were, to walk or ride my bike 3-5 miles every day and to lose 2-3 pounds every week by the end of the semester. For my nutrition goals, I wanted to only eat fast food on the weekend and to drink eight glasses of water every day by the end of the semester. Finally my stress management goals were to write down all the thoughts that caused worry or stress and after a stressful situation listen to ASMR videos to help relax. However, as the semester went on I noticed that several of these goals were not being met. Drinking eight glasses of water a day was not a hard goal for me to achieve at all. To help fulfill this goal, I carried around a 74.4 ounce water jug with me. I would take small sips from it every so often, and by night time I had consumed the entire jug. On occasions where I did not have my jug, I would drink four 16.9 ounce water bottles. I stayed strong with this goal throughout the semester. Despite my success with that goal, I had a very hard time only eating out on the weekend. To help combat this issue, I tried to change the goal to eating out only two days of the week. This plan however fell through immediately. My family often time ate out during the week and it was hard to say no when I was offered (especially since I was not paying!). I also spent a lot of time with my fast food eating boyfriend; because of this I tried looking at the ‘healthier’ options that were offered by the restaurants. The healthier choices were just as bad, if not worst then what I would usually get. This was mainly a result of experiencing sudden freedom, going from a nurturing private school environment to a college environment. I had to adapt to the situation and although at the time I maybe didn’t do as well in the first year, I have grown as an individual and improved my focus and determination within the second year. I now set myself weekly targets and pride myself in doing my work to a very high standard. I also set myself personal targets and enjoy going to the gym daily which has helped me maintain a positive mental attitude.
The SMART goal I set for myself was to eat healthier by the end of the semester. In the early part of this semester, I was successful. I gathered information on foods that would be good for me to eat and snack on throughout the day and I had my grocery list written before I went into the store to not get sidetracked. However, as the semester progressed my eating habits lacked and no longer went to get groceries and often forgot to eat if I did not set a reminder or my grandmother brought food. My anticipated time to graduation is five years with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. In Document one and two in chapter 11 of American Appetites we can see the United States government continuing to improve and spread knowledge about developing a proper diet. Looking especially at document two, the USDA changes from a pyramid to a plate helping to better convey how much of each food group someone should be eating. I have always known about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle as I was born and raised in the Philippines where the food is fresh and healthy. However, when I moved to the United Kingdom, there is a lot of processed food which is unhealthy for the body. I realised after a few months moving here that my skin became worse and also gained a lot of weight. There are a lot of people who are suffering from different health conditions due to unhealthy eating such as obesity, high cholesterol, heart problems, diabetes, high blood pressure and many more. Food is one of the necessities of life in order to survive. Everyone has different views on what to eat and different eating habits. People are so busy in their everyday life that they don’t keep track of what they eat on a daily basis. However, it is important to understand the role of nutrition. Nutrition and exercise are vital to maintain physical health. Proper nutrition is required by our body for energy, growth, maintenance, and repair (Grodner, Roth, & Walkingshw, 2012). Even the brain requires nutrients in order for a person to be intellectually healthy. Along with nutrition, exercise can be controlled by an individual. Exercise helps to strengthen bones and muscles, control weight, improves mental health and mood, reduces risk for cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, and some cancers, and overall increases the chances of living longer (CDC). For this assignment, I kept a food journal by tracking what I ate and the amount of exercise on a daily basis on a food tracker for three weeks. The purpose of that was to analyze my diet and exercise in more depth in order to determine the amount of vitamins, minerals, fat, protein, carbohydrates, and calories I am eating daily. Based on the results, I made some modifications.
Living up to my resolution, I joined several clubs, both in and out of school and academic and recreational. I also met some of my very best friends in high school. Achieving all of this, friends, memberships to academic clubs and good grades, made up my first successful experience in high school. I was driven by the years in middle school and the promise that I made to myself at the end of eighth grade. Throughout my under classmen years I exceled in all subjects and thoroughly enjoyed the clubs I had joined. I think my downfall for the last two years of school was that I took for granted my good grades and as my classes got more rigorous I didn’t change the way I learned the material, but continued on the same path that I had been following my entire academic career, even when my grades were slipping slightly. Halfway through my senior year, I realized I needed to change the way I was learning the curriculum my instructors were teaching. I’ve always been the type of student to take good notes or listen to a lecture and understand everything the first time around, as was the case in elementary school and middle school. But my more rigorous classes proved to be a challenge for me and I did not know the proper way of learning the material on my own.
