In order for me to obtain the ability and knowledge to take care of my future self and family, it is important to my current self that I graduate from college with a degree in my hand. Whether it be a bachelor’s degree or even a certificate of attendance, I will stand mighty and proud of all of my accomplishments that I will achieve during my academic journey to a better life. There will be obstacles I must overcome and there are skills that I must possess in order to make my goals a reality, such as setting academic goals, managing time and stress, taking risks, and remaining financially stable. Setting academic goals can be rather a difficult challenge for those who do not have a clear vision of what they want to become after graduating. I believe that envisioning what must be done in order to reach my final destination is a major motivational aspect of completing my academic journey. One of my goals that I have set for myself is for me to learn the skills needed to prioritize multiple assets in my life. Another goal I have set for myself is finding a way to set myself from others in the career field I am after. In order to do this, I must overcome myself as an obstacle, and continue to remain determined. “Although goal-setting theory is …show more content…

During high school, whether it is by a teacher, parent or classmate a student will be advised to go to college. “College is where you find yourself,” they will say. College is made to seem as the place where students will attain a brilliant education, thus making them feel as though once they are done with the schooling, a dependable job of high pay will appear for them. In our society, college is not a scarce option, but rather, an expectation. For many graduating high schoolers, college is the next step. Attaining a college degree is not necessary for creating a life for us as our civilization makes it out to be.
Goals give you something to measure yourself against and give you direction. Currently, my main goal is to graduate from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree of science in engineering with a concentration in biomedical engineering. My anticipated time to graduation is five years with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Beyond getting my bachelor’s degree at East Carolina University, I would like to go to medical school and become a doctor focusing on prosthetics. In order to make my goals a reality, I will have to work diligently to remain on track throughout my schooling. Additional goals that I have set for myself are to complete homework assignments by the time they are due, reading assigned material before it is discussed in class, doing well in each of my courses this semester, successfully participating in extracurricular activities, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, getting a position as an engineer, and becoming a leader within both the engineering community and the general community. “Never underestimate your own strength. You were born for a purpose and are blessed with the power to achieve it” (Leon Brown). I have this quote printed out and on the wall next to my door so I can see it every day as a reminder to myself. I believe that we all have a purpose on this earth and that everything we go through on the journey there has a reason whether to teach a lesson or set an example. We have places where we want to end up and goals we want to achieve. We set these goals and dreams to help us fulfill the purpose we see for ourselves. I believe my purpose is to help people in their times of need. To fulfill my purpose, I will need to use my personal, academic and career goals to create a pathway to get to where I want to be
The necessity of my education is immense. I will be the first of my family for many generations to graduate college. I almost suffered the same fate as my current and past family members in not realizing my dreams. I regret the time that it took me to realize that I longed for more out of life but somehow it put my determination into overdrive. I have both the want and the need to achieve a higher education. As I have mentioned before, even though earning my desired degrees and desired grade point average will take me a while I have the drive to do so. During college I will not only help myself but I will also have the opportunity to help others through volunteer work. I am so excited with every new class I take and I am going to continue to be excited about my career and every job leading up to it well after my degrees have been earned.
