The following chapter will define music practise and its importance. A student is constantly instructed to practise in order to develop overall musical ability and to advance and maintain the proficiency in their instrument. However, how many students really understand what practise is? Are they ever taught about the overall benefits of practise and most importantly, the general approaches they ought to be implementing into their practise session? It is important to communicate to students why they should practise, what they will gain from it and how it is of valuable to them. If they are more aware of the overall benefits and the correct approach they will be more driven to use the time more efficiently. Students that approach practise …show more content…
A student that is unaware of the correct approach and plays something over and over again thinking they will eventually be able to play the piece will less likely gain proficiency to a high standard. ‘Repetition, though, is not in itself a sufficient or necessary condition for continuing development, requiring a direction and purpose if it is to address the specifc problems that face instrumental learners at different stages.’ (Pitts, S & Davidson, J, 2000). In addition, it is an important skill to be aware of the purposes of practise and how it is beneficial to us short term and more valuable to us in the long term. (Pitts, S & Davidson, J, 2000). Before discussing why we practise and the approach we should take we should define practise itself. How can we as educators define practise? Music practise is when a student exercises regularly to improve, maintain and acquire technical proficiency in their chosen instrument. Practise defines a series of techniques learnt over a period of time that lead to the proficiency of being able to play an instrument well and to a high …show more content…
Team skills are crucial in life and in order to play music as part of an ensemble it is necessary to learn how to co-operate with people. In order to produce a musical sound and deliver a performance as a group everyone must listen to each other. Committing to long tedious hours of group rehearsals and to be dedicated to that particular band not only boosts your musical ability but it also teaches you the valuable aspect of teamwork. Practise not only leads to achieving music proficiency it also teaches life long skills. It prepares us to commit to something long term. It enhances time management and organisational skills. If a student can commit to attending music lessons every week and maintain that proficiency throughout the week by scheduling their own individual rehearsal time then, in turn, they are practising subconsciously these life long skills. It is teaching them to organise in advance the challenges they should work on in order to use their time more efficiently. Practising an instrument also teaches us about perseverance as it takes time and effort to learn a piece while maintaining a level of concentration and patience
Not to be short-sided this method book does have redeeming qualities that the band instructor could take advantage of. As mentioned before, the variety of music used in this text is quite extensive. Music of all different styles from the United States is used, as is music from other countries in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Within these different musical styles, the variety of musical forms incorporated is also good, as ethnic styles, such as polka, as well as other standard musical forms like waltzes and ballads are used. In addition, many of the exercises – such as the “Listen and play” tunes – throughout the book encourage students to use the accompanying CD, which contains quality sound models for the students to hear, reinforcing ideas for good tone production. Other helpful elements included towards the beginning of the book include a simple practice journal and illustrations and instructions on developing the basics of proper embouchure, posture, and hand position. As an added bonus, the represen...

As a musician you are exposed to many different types of terminology, ideas, debates and concepts most people are not. There are Interest and topics that we find appealing like the different language that we use to communicate with each other, are very different from someone that is heavily invested in other activities likes sports or even knitting . With these differences we have formed our own social group. The definition of an music educator is a field that touches on all domains of learning, including the psychomotor domain, the cognitive domain, and, in particular and significant ways, the affective domain, including music appreciation and sensitivity In our community we strive to achieve the goals set in this definition and also to move forward in our advancement of music in the world
Doing that involves an increasing mastery of skills, knowledge, and ideas." (Robinson, p. 119) The mentioned idea can be used to motivate students to participate in the learning process. The same way young children learn playing with others, the older child can do it experimenting and prove their theories. As a teacher is easy to noticed the difference between a lesson that is pure theory, and the lesson that incorporates creative factors. Students present a better behavior during the lesson, participate, interact, formulate questions and get the answers working together without
middle of paper ... ... Music was not taught in the high school I was in. To satisfy my interest in learning about music and how to play musical instruments, I had to find a source of education other than school; a great depiction in agreement with Graff’s claim that students are being limited by not considering their interests when creating curricula (Graff 197). In conclusion, education is broader than just falling into what the contemporary school system has to offer. Both Gatto and Graff proved this by explaining how conforming students to certain perspectives of education limits their potential in other educational branches that interest the students.
Many public schools offer music education as part of their curriculum. Although these classes are required, many schools choose not to allocate enough money into the music programs in favor of better scores on standard tests. Recently there have been many strides to strengthen the importance of music education.
Investigating these theories the focus must be on the implication they have on my practice. These are only useful in so far as they can help the learners achieve the lesson aims and objectives. (Wallace 2007:93)
Music is the third most important thing to me in life outside of god and my mom. Music keeps me balanced. Every since I was a baby music was played around me. Jazz was always played around me to soothe me. There would be times when I would be really hyper acting like I couldn't sleep, my mom would put on some jazz and I would be fine. A lot of times I can have a long chore and I say to my self how can I accomplish this, Knowing it will take me forever. So I'll put on some jazz music and in twenty-five minutes I'm finished.
In my opinion it is very valuable to improve knowledge and practice continually. Everything changes with time so our knowledge and practice have to be kept up to date and also we must keep expanding our awareness. For example, learning new skills will help us improve our performance.
In order to be an effective teacher there needs to be an understanding that we all learn differently, this means that no single teaching strategy is effective for all students/learners all the time. This makes teaching a complex process because you need to understand and meet the requirements of all of your learners. Students learn best when they aren’t asked to simply memorise information but when they form their own understandings of what is being taught. When a student has successfully learnt a new idea they are able to then intergrate this information with their previously learnt information and make sense of it. To be an effective teacher you need to work jointly with students to asses where they are at, be able to give feedback on how the student is going and ensure that they are understanding the lesson (Killen, 2013) According to Lovat and Smith (2003) students learning must result in a change in a student’s understanding of the information being taught. In order to show understanding they must be able to share this information with others and want to learn more (Killen, 2013). In order to have a deeper understanding of what is being taught they need to be aware of the relationship that exists between what they knew previously and the new information that is being learned (Killen, 2013).. Students need to be given goals that they can achieve in order to feel a sense of mastery over their own learning, this gives students motivation that they are able to complete tasks and to keep going.
Educators are set in place to guide us through a thorough understanding of a subject, and give us enough information to suffice without their immediate guidance. In piano class, our Professors have been taught to use specific methods on breaking down the skills to becoming a pianist. From scales to score reading, all of the lessons are used to gain a sustainable amount of self knowledge to plunk out notes for our future choirs or assist our own rehearsals in a practice room. Guido of Arezzo, musical therapist, pedagogue and author of Micrologus suggested a lack of common knowledge is one of the main causes for an individual to not put forth the appropriate efforts to achieve a perfect understanding of the task.
As Angela Lee Duckworth stated, “That every one of my students could learn the material if they worked hard and long enough.” That is a way of practicing working and learning for it just like making an effort. Practice is very important because most of us fail most of the time. But practicing is what helps us to learn from our fail. Practicing to get something in your head is really going to help.
