Many people wonder why they aren't smart enough. A way to get smarter is to make an effort, practice, and is willing to get up when they fail. Being smart is not that easy, it's a challenge. A challenge is what you need to make you smarter. Many people tend to just give up, are you willing to get smarter?
There has been a lot of research that has been proven that making an effort can change your learning and can make you smarter. As claimed by Carol Dweck, “By practicing you make your brain smarter”. That explains that effort is something we can do to make us smarter. Making effort is what's going to help you, if you don't why would you even try. Effort is what you need to be smarter, it's not just going to be easy. Learning and working hard is making an effort and that is a big part of getting smarter. You don't expect to get smarter just by showing up to class, do you? Well, that is the deal then you're in a hole, you would have to figure your way out. The best way to get out of that hole is making an effort to get. Effort is key, and you know how to use that key.

As Angela Lee Duckworth stated, “That every one of my students could learn the material if they worked hard and long enough.” That is a way of practicing working and learning for it just like making an effort. Practice is very important because most of us fail most of the time. But practicing is what helps us to learn from our fail. Practicing to get something in your head is really going to help. Carol Dweck states, “When babies need to tell their parents what they want, they start practicing talking themselves.” That is a great way to get your message out when you don't know how to get it. If you don't get something, keep practicing for
People can achieve intelligent by learning or by following their passion in whatever they love. If someone loves fixing cars there is a chance he will become a mechanic, so he will be intelligent in that careers. That is how someone becomes intelligent because they learned everything they can about their profession in book or by what they learn on the streets. To become a intelligent person is important in society because that sets a standard for us and we try to learn everything we can to be the best in our jobs and careers, so we can be the best in our field.
A famous quote by Martin Luther King states “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” The two articles “Hidden Intellectualism” and “Blue Collar Brilliance” both emphasis the author's opinion on the qualifications and measurements of someone's intelligence. “Hidden Intellectualism” focuses on students or younger people who have trouble with academic work because, they are not interested in the topic. Today, in schools students are taught academic skills that are not very interesting, the author mentions this is why children are not motivated in schools. The main viewpoint of this article is that schools need to encourage students
can knuckle down, work hard, keep a positive frame of mind and try earnestly to
"Can You Make Yourself Smarter? Written by Dan Hurley first published in 2011 in The New York Times newspaper described ways to increase fluid intelligence, which allows people to manipulate data and solve problems.
Alexa, a junior in college, shares her ideas on Intelligence. Intelligence is determined by motivation to do required tasks. Motivation is necessary to complete basic tasks such as doing homework. Also for completing difficult tasks. Which allows someone to learn new things, (Hietpas). Alexa explains the necessity of motivation to complete simple tasks. For an individual to be intelligent they have to learn new things. To be able to learn new things, one has to have the motivation to learn. In addition, if someone does not have motivation, they will not be able to learn anything new. Therefore, never having the opportunity to become intelligent. A mutual trait between intelligent people is wanting to learn new things. Taylor mentions her father whom she believes is intelligent without a lot of education, “[My father is] motivated to constantly be learning new things. He is not told, he wants to learn,” (Nelson). In the quote Taylor analyzed her father who only had a high school education. She explains that he is someone she considers highly intelligent. Intelligence is determined by motivation to learn new things and the tasks done in one’s free time. Taylor’s father is intelligent because of the motivation to constantly be learning new things. He chooses to learn new things in his free time and has the motivation to do so. Although, he might not have had as much traditional school as
Throughout elementary and middle school, I was usually placed in upper level reading and writing classes and lower level math classes. I never really thought very much about why that might be. I assumed I was naturally good at language arts so I excelled in it, and I assumed that my brain wasn’t mathematically inclined so I just didn’t do as well in that area. However, after revisiting my past experiences with math and my previous approaches to learning, I’ve come to the conclusion that after coming in contact with any sort of roadblock or failure, I gave up. Now I consider myself a believer in the incremental model of intelligence, because it’s been my experience that when I believe that I have room to grow I work harder and I improve. Yes, I still believe that to a degree some people are more inclined to do better at math than others, but succeeding in any subject takes hard work in and out of the classroom, not just natural
Results of students who received praise for intelligence: The students in this category had negative results after receiving praising. When asked afterwards if they wanted to do the same level of problems or try more challenging ones, they chose the task that would allow them to look smart and do well on. Consequently, while telling a child how smart he or she is, we are sending a message to not take risks and just look the part. Afterwards, these children were given a hard task, which they performed poorly on, and they know longer liked the problems and did not want to practice them at home. Children also felt “dumb” and when given the initial task (in which they did well), they performed significantly worse. Lastly, their opinions of intelligence reflected that it was an innate capacity as though you cannot improve.
There are many expectations on the way males and females are suppose to talk. As a baby and toddler one’s parents wants them to talk
Everyone has a different viewpoint on what it is like to go through a hardship in your life. Some people view struggles in life as a strength and that they build character. Others view struggles as a sign of defeat and that they should just give up. For example, the hardest thing that a middle class, 17 year old girl might have had to endure in her life so far is a heart-wrenching breakup with her first boyfriend of three months. While a lower class, 17 year old girl has had to take over the role of mother in her house with 4 young siblings, no father, and a mother who is at work all day, barely breaking even at the end of the month. Both girls are going through a hardship in their lives, but one might view the other as less severe of a struggle
There are lots of examples of this in the book but here is a good example from Mawi when he ran track. “That summer, I would run at least six days a week and lift weights every other day. I did it, working during the day and training at night. Again, my hard work paid big dividends … I earned all-conference honors.” (115). Mawi joined the high school track and field team. During his sophomore and junior years, Mawi only made marginal progress. He wanted to change that. Mawi knew from his father that if you work hard, you will succeed. As you can see by this quote, Mawi did as his father said and no doubt, he succeeded in getting all-conference honors. Persisting is not just in sports, however, Mawi also worked hard at school. He recalls, “I stayed up night after night, rereading the chapters and reviewing my notes. I would get home from sports at 6 p.m., eat, help out around the house, and study until midnight. Then I would get up at 6 a.m. and do it all over again. The hard work paid off. I often got the highest grade in the class.” (112). As you can see, Mawi also worked hard at school. Mawi took an advanced us history class. He knew that by working hard and persisting, he could get the highest grade in the class. Mawi spent 6 hours studying and reviewing his work. He was committed to earning the highest grade in his class and his hard work paid off. Working hard and persisting is a valuable lesson to learn because it produces positive results. Also, it does not matter whether you are running track or studying for a test, if you work hard at anything and set your mind to it, you will achieve your
The author elaborates the confusion that comes about when people think of someone who is smart in the streets but fails to exercise the same in the classroom. In many instances, those who are believed to be capable of maneuvering their ways in the streets are capable of surviving in rough neighborhoods. Alternatively, those who seem to be smart in class may not be capable of effectively doing the same in the event that they find themselves in a task that requires out of class skills. In passing the argument, the author has cited his personal life as an example to explain the misconception regarding the two concepts. In most
Many students believe that doing well on tests and getting good grades is the equivalent to being intelligent and educated. While those attributes coincide with being knowledgeable, they are not the determining factors of whether or not a person is smart. Being “smart” comes from knowing information – information about matters such as science, cars, or cooking. (14) Everyone is smart in his or her own way. The ways by which people obtain information are different, but the same is true for all that they were taught in some way. Teachers all have different styles of teaching, and these differences have been very apparent to me during my education. Several attributes – the rate at which they teach, how they test, their personalities, and how much
Two of the most important study skills are setting goals and taking notes. A student may set a time goal, such as studying a few hours a week; set a general goal, such as trying to study hard and stay on schedule; set a specific performance goal, such as getting at least 80% of the homework problems correct. Another important study skill is taking notes. Students generally make two kinds of mistakes in taking notes. One is to try to write down everything the instructor says, which leads to confusing notes. The other is to copy concepts that they do not understand but hope to learn by memorization. Good notes are compromised of the following: 1) written information summarized in your own words; 2) outline the important concepts; 3) try to associate the lecture notes with the material text; 4) asking yourself questions and making up questions from the notes.
In order to be an effective teacher there needs to be an understanding that we all learn differently, this means that no single teaching strategy is effective for all students/learners all the time. This makes teaching a complex process because you need to understand and meet the requirements of all of your learners. Students learn best when they aren’t asked to simply memorise information but when they form their own understandings of what is being taught. When a student has successfully learnt a new idea they are able to then intergrate this information with their previously learnt information and make sense of it. To be an effective teacher you need to work jointly with students to asses where they are at, be able to give feedback on how the student is going and ensure that they are understanding the lesson (Killen, 2013) According to Lovat and Smith (2003) students learning must result in a change in a student’s understanding of the information being taught. In order to show understanding they must be able to share this information with others and want to learn more (Killen, 2013). In order to have a deeper understanding of what is being taught they need to be aware of the relationship that exists between what they knew previously and the new information that is being learned (Killen, 2013).. Students need to be given goals that they can achieve in order to feel a sense of mastery over their own learning, this gives students motivation that they are able to complete tasks and to keep going.
The Oxford Dictionary defines intelligence as “the ability acquire and apply knowledge and skills.” Many people are born naturally intelligent, able to grasp and understand concepts easily, with little work. In children, it is easy to separate those born with higher intellectual ability from the rest, because they easily excel in learning. This skill is often lost by those born with it, and through a great deal of work others attain it. In order for an individual to have true intelligence into her adult years, she must foster what gifts she is given, and strive to better her self academically. Even as early as elementary school, many who are born with natural talent begin to fall behind intellectually. These students are often not
