In my opinion it is very valuable to improve knowledge and practice continually. Everything changes with time so our knowledge and practice have to be kept up to date and also we must keep expanding our awareness. For example, learning new skills will help us improve our performance. Personal development benefits me in a way that I am able to provide high quality care to the residents I look after. As a manager, it helps me to act in an effective way to lead the team. Our residents receive care services must be confident that they can trust those who deliver care not only know what to do, but also to know how to do it well. Leaders recognize improving clinical quality will have many benefits for both, residents and the organization. For example, it will benefit residents by improving satisfaction, reducing complications, and improving their quality of life. It will benefit NCH by reducing turnover, improving occupancy rates, attracting top talent, and enhance employee satisfaction (Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes, n.d.). Increasing professional development opportunities will be key for improving clinical quality. Through the utilisation of the accompanying text, I aim to discuss and reflect upon one person’s care, to which I have had previous involvement. Using the perspectives set out by Chapelhow et al (2005), I aim to gain a broader outlook on what is expected of me as a Student Nurse. Chapelhow et al (2005) has identified six skills that they feel are required of every Health Care Practitioner. These skills are defined as ‘enablers’ as they are fundamental skills that provide the means for expert professional practice (Chapelhow et al 2005). Although there are six skills outlined, I will only be using two of them to analyse the care I provided. I have chosen to use communication and risk management as my two enablers.
Good teamwork is important in a patient centred care. It is a team of health professionals who actively participate, cooperate, interact, communicate expertise, respect, trust and its main focus is to improve patient’s health (Miller, 2008, p.14). Also, the team includes the family of the client and the patient itself (Miller, 2008, p. 15). Therefore, all members have a role to play. For instance, in the nursing practice it involves health promotion and maintenance regarding patient’s health in order to decrease the impacts of negative outcomes (NMBA, 2010). Nevertheless, this can be maintained under the national competency standard (NMBA, 2010). Part of the national competency standard promotes professional responsibility, multidisciplinary approach, critical thinking and client care delivery (NMBA, 2010).
Profession care workers are trained to apply the values of care in their work. They are also helped in this, because they are expected to follow a code of practice.
Nurses are able to reflect upon their past experiences of work and build and improve this ensuring their level of competence and skills is in line with NMC guidelines. Improving the quality of care provided to patients is an ongoing process and requires practitioners to contently reflect and improve their practice. (Howatson-Jones, 2013) One way in which reflection can improve the quality of care is through the use of professional supervision, as stated by (Daly, Speedy and Jackson, 2014) a focus for supervision should be enhancing a nurse’s skills and ability to reflect on practice. It should reflect on the standard of care provided and highlight areas for improvement such as further training. This, in turn, leads to a greater self-awareness of practitioners’ own abilities. The process is not about finding faults, but to improve and learn to ensure the quality of care is high and professional for all patients. Professional development is a subject about understanding and using those effectively from my prospective. Besides it enhances a vital skill called “critically thinking”. Since the course started my expectations were always at the higher level. After the long run with my team and my teacher, I personally believe that I have successfully met my expectations from this course.
Therefore, I strive every day to be that professional, that health care provider that has a positive and long lasting impact on patient’s health and wellbeing. I always strive to be that professional that my patients and colleagues trust, respect and admire. As a registered nurse, I have accomplished that. I know it because I am asked to precept new nurses and students, because my colleagues come to me frequently to ask me questions when they are in doubt, because when there is a difficult or complicated patient, my supervisor trust me with his care, because at the end of a long busy shift with seven to eight patients under my care, my patients praise me and thank me for the great and unique care I provided them.
According to the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) continuing professional development is defined as “the way professionals continue to learn and develop throughout their careers so they keep their skills and knowledge up to date and are able to work safely, legally and effectively.” (HCPC, 2012). Continuing professional development (CPD) is an important factor of health care professionals work and practice as it ensures that they are up to date with relevant policies and procedures, that their quality of work is of a high degree and also to benefit the service users.
Assessing the interactions that I observed over the last several days, I ascertained the professional development delivery chosen, suitable for this group of educators. Moreover, respect and camaraderie are present in the Willingboro School. Those that are in a leadership role are demonstrating nurturing guidance towards their fellow colleague, teacher, or the maturing students in their care. Thus, as I assess and examine the preliminary draft of the professional development session that I am going to deliver, I believe that I have determined the correct delivery format the lesson study. Continued Professional Development is now an important part of ongoing registration with the NMC and is essential in maintaining professional standards. In order to revalidate, nurses must write 5 reflective accounts within a 3 year period and each reflective account must explain what the nurse has learnt from the CPD activity and explain how it relates to the Code of Conduct and in particular the 4 themes of Prioritising People, Practicing Effectively, Preserving Safety and Promoting Professionalism and Trust.. Nurses also have to discuss the written reflective accounts with another NMC registered nurse coving the 5 reflective accounts Section 9.2 of the NMC code of conduct asks nurses to “gather and reflect on feedback from a variety of sources, using it to improve your practice and performance” (NMC, 2015) This is why the NMC promotes reflective practice as it ensures the nurse is practicing within their competency and in a safe manner while identifying any areas for improvement in their practice Reflective practice also makes the nurses more accountable for their actions.. (NMC, 2015) Reflective writing is an important feature of professional practice. Nurses have to keep a record of their continued professional development. At annual reviews nurses are able to present evidence of their development through a portfolio which should contain reflective accounts of their practice. These reflective accounts will help them identify strengths and weaknesses, highlight their performance, improve their skills and highlight any area that could be
The professional nurse is a role that is always changing and dynamic. The nurse providing medicine cannot become complacent and make assumptions about their clients. When a nurse does this, they are at risk for making errors, losing patient respect, or even death in some instances. I think it is important that I clarify my own values to ensure that my care is client-centered.
