odd jobs every week. Roman presents her message by incorporating the use of hyperbole, repetition, and pathos to help her audience to interpret her message. Roman presents extensive amount of hyperbole to create pathos within her memoir to illuminate her message of dedicating yourself to your goals in order to succeed. Roman exaggerates by stating, “you gotta go your way, I gotta go my way” (816). Here, Roman was not only speaking about her boyfriend, but also to herself. When she was about to get married, she noticed that her boyfriend was changing, he not only started drinking, but also getting violent and physical. Even though she still loves her boyfriend, she did not want her kids to grow up witnessing abuse, or even worse becoming the victims. After reading between the lines, you noticed how Roman was also figuratively speaking about herself. She wanted to let go of her past self, the one that gives up and breaks down without ever having the intention to stand back up again. Rather than breaking down, she wants to be able to face a challenging problem and working even harder to succeed. Another hyperbole included by Roman was, “When I first opened, I knew this was a serious job, something that I had devote myself a 100 percent, 110 percent” (820). It is not easy to start your own business, after working odd jobs, going to community college, and getting her GED while taking care of children by herself, she finally made it. Roman advised, “I’ve never been afraid to ask questions because I’ve always wanted to know- I’ve always wanted to learn. Even when you are old and gray, keep learning” (819). She exaggerates the importance of learning in order to convey her message. Not only does she mean the learning in school but also the everyday life lessons. Even when you are old and gray, you should learn something new. She emphasizes the importance of learning because knowledge is something no one can take away from you. All in all, you can easily see Roman’s connection back to her message using hyperbole, your life is in your hands, even though you started out on the wrong road, you can always turn around and persevere in life. To further convey his message, Roman included repetition throughout her memoir.
Through repetition Roman emphasized her desire to become better,“I want my children to see what I saw in my father: work, work, work. I want to b my kids’ idol” (820). By including repetition, she lets her audience understand the significance of putting in hard work and doing everything to the best of your abilities to better yourself. Roman declared, “I wanted to work there, but I wanted the education more. I didn't want to stay there forever, there’s more in the world than just one place” (816). For humans, there is nothing more comfortable than routine. Roman wanted her audience to know that it is okay to break your routine and try something new. Her use of repetition emphasized on the different phrasing of “want” is used to dramatizes our emotional appeal towards the situation. Humans have their basic needs, but Roman let’s us know that it is alright to want to experience something new. She used repetition and emphasized over and over again the importance of self preservation and the ability to give not only your family the best but also yourself. Roman also added, “But I wised up. I don’t want to mess up in life again. I don’t want to let myself down. I don’t want to let my children down. I don’t want to let my father down” (820). The effectiveness of these sentences structures are outstanding. Not only does it bring forth the emotional appeal of your audience, but many audience can also easily relate. Letting people who you care about down might be the worst feeling in the world. Using repetition can help Roman reinforce her ideas to the audience and also persuade or convince the audience on the message of dedicating your time to your
goal. Additionally, Roman also displayed a significant amount of pathos within her memoir. Roman admits that, “I was seventeen when I had my first boy, nineteen the second one and twenty-one my daughter. I lived with my boyfriend - we weren’t legally married, but we were like married” (814). Having and taking care of a child is a strenuous and tiring job, even more if you triple the amount of children in the household. Even though Roman lived with her ex boyfriend during that time, he did not have a job so the financial support was solely her responsibility. Roman wanted her audience to realize at the tender age of twenty she had so much responsibilities placed upon her should, yet she was still able to succeed and build herself up, so what is stopping other people from doing so? Roman reasoned that, “I’ve learned that sometimes friends and business don’t mix. I hired two friends, and they took advantage of me - to them it was like I was not a boss; I was their friend. Like this is easy money; it is not easy money, it’s a responsibility” (818). Imagine being betrayed by a close friend of yours, recovering from that is not always easy. Friends are suppose to help you through difficult situations and giving you a hand when need it the most. Roman was betrayed and taken advantage by some of her closest friend. By including this, it can affect the audience’s overall mood and many might sympathize or relate to her. Roman adds on, “My family we’re a minority and we’ve proved many people wrong - we don’t fit their stereotypes” (820). Roman was a minority in the majority without a stable income while taking care of three children. Not only does she push herself to become better, but also her kids, she does not want them to become “deadbeats” or to join gains, that is a waste in society. This tends to trigger the emotional appeal of certain audience groups. Minorities, single mothers, or even just people without a stable income and going through a hard time could relate to Roman’s writing. But not only does Roman relate to her audience base, she also encourages them to do better and become dependent on themselves rather than completely shutting down when facing a difficult time. Essentially, Roman reinforces her message that dedication and self-discipline can go a long ways towards achieving your goal. Not everyone can have a perfect beginning, if you took the wrong path in your life, just reroute your roads, but never change your destination. Roman incorporates the message to her audience by using hyperbole, repetition, and pathos. When facing a demanding and exhausting situation, it is okay to break down or take a break. But it is never okay to completely give up. If it means restarting everything then so be it, if everything was so easy there would not be things such as dream goals. If you’re stuck in a difficult moment, do not stop, continue to look for solutions and bring out the best of yourself.
It is safe to say that work comes in many different forms. Whether it be a fast food or a corporate, the people that surround an individual make a great impact on the way he or she may work. Singapore, by Mary Oliver, is about a young woman working as a custodian in an airport who although works alone, enjoys her work and the people she meets. Dorianne Laux’s What I Wouldn’t Do, introduces another young woman reviewing the jobs she has had throughout time and reflects on those that she liked and disliked. Hard Work, by Stephen Dunn, exemplifies a young boy working in a soda factory during his summer break. Searching for happiness in life and work is just what these individuals are doing.

Iliana Roman was a self-made woman. She wrote the essay “First Job”. She was a young single mother when she started working. She tells us how she valued hard work, of how she used work experience as a way of education. She then went to cosmetology school to learn fashion. Afterwards she used past experiences -from both work and school- to open her own hair salon. She now is planning on going back to school for real-estate, and she sees herself as a role model to her sons and the young girls living around her.
In William Shakespeare's, Julius Caesar, rhetorical devices are used throughout Decius Brutus’s speech to Caesar to persuade him to attend the senate, and ultimately meet his demise. Decius Brutus uses repetition to directly play into Caesar’s ego and convince him to show at an event he was previously very unsure of. Decius first uses repetition to make Caesar feel as if he were an irreplaceable addition to the senate. He addresses Caesar as, “most mighty Caesar…” (2.2.74) multiple times throughout his oration. The repetition of “mighty” draws Caesar’s attention away from the fact that he really must not go to the senate and instead focuses on why he must. Caesar is known to be easily persuaded by the promise of attention or rewards. Decius
Studs Terkel published a nonfiction Working which consists many interviews among different people’s descriptions of their jobs. Through this book, Terkel demonstrates the meaning of work to different people and how their work experiences shape their attitudes about their lives. Among these interviewers, Maggie Holmes is a domestic while Dave Bender is a factory owner. Although their wages are different, Maggie Holmes and Dave Bender’s attitudes about their works are contradictory. Throughout ancient civilizations, women were lower than men. In some civilizations like Mesopotamia society, women were below slaves. It is not shocking that they would still not be equal to men. In Roman society, women had more independence and people were more encouraging of women being educated in philosophy. In the Hans society, women did not have any freedom. They were required to follow what the men told them. By examining Gaius Musonius Rufus’ essay and Ban Zhao’s essay, the views of women were different. Woman in Roman society had more freedom and women in the Han’s society were required to fulfill her responsibilities.
In Titus Livius’, The Early History of Rome, Livy takes on the task of documenting Rome’s early history and some of the famous individuals who help contribute to the ‘greatness’ of Rome. Livy dedicates an entire portion of his writing to describe the reigns of the first seven kings of Rome; all who influence the formation and governance of Rome in some way. However, of the seven kings in early Roman history, King Romulus and King Numa Pompilius achieved godlike worship and high esteem from their fellow Romans. While both highly important and respected figures in Rome’s history, the personalities and achievements of King Romulus and King Numa Pompilius are complete opposites of one another. Despite the differences found in each king and of their rule over Rome, both Romulus and Numa Pompilius have a tremendous influence in the prosperity and expansion of Rome in its early days.

Motivation can cause people to work hard and win a state championship, but it can also cause people to kill. Motivation can be defined as an internal state of a person that drives them to action for the purpose of reaching a target goal. William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is a tragic drama that shows a huge variety of the different motives that fuel each character. Readers see what motivates each character, and how far that motivation takes them. Whether they are motivated by malice, jealousy, revenge, or loyalty, each character has their own incentives for their actions. Whatever motives they may have, readers see how these motives drive Cassius, Brutus, and Antony to extreme measures, and how this leads to tragic deaths in the end.
I thought about it for months, sleepless nights, draining my energy, do I quit my job and go back to school or do I continue to work? My family has begun to suffer; my oldest child is now first grade, my youngest is four. To continue to work means working only for family insurance and to pay the daycare to raise my children. Will they ever know the joy of summer breaks before it’s too late? Are their tiny brains being overloaded with school work and not enough play and imaginative exercise? All these thoughts run, trample and muttle my initiative to get up each morning and drag myself to a job that I’m not happy with. The tempting, aroma of fresh ground coffee beans, the hot water of the mornings shower just don’t have the same effect on my alertness and desire to go to work. Money is going to be sparse we will need to get use to a new life style. The day has come; I can’t take this yo-yoing effect of dread and despair. I have to, there isn’t another way, we’ll have to make do, I’m going to quit today. The sudden realization of a decision that’s long overdue has my stomach in knots, I feel the bile rising, going to be sick, and yet my head and shoulders feel fifty pounds lighter. There is a light at the end of this long drab tunnel.
living people are in to gain success. It’s also something our economy thrives off of. You wouldn’t think so, but it’s true. That’s why I chose it to be my essay topic. It’s that need to get to work in the morning to spend yet another day kissing butt and working like a dog so maybe just maybe you’ll be able to have enough money to live on. Until of course you’re on your way home and see the cutest little thing in the store window and that little voice in your head says, “oh darling it’s simply perfect, you’ve just got to have it”. That voice gets everyone into trouble doesn’t it?
