The Author Edith Hamilton was born on August 12, 1867 in Dresden, Germany while her mother was visiting relatives. Hamilton started to study Latin at the age of seven, memorized passages from the Bible and could also recite poetry. Even as a young girl, she was a "natural storyteller." She was determined to get a good education. After receiving her B.A. and M.A. from Bryn Mawr College in 1894 she studied the classics in Germany. From 1896 to 1922 she was the headmistress of the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore. Among some of her works are The Greek Way (1930), The Roman Way (1932), Mythology (1942), and The Echo of Greece (1957). Her books are so revered that Mythology remains the foremost introductory textbook about its subject. The Theme The Roman Way is essentially a collection of letters, poems and essays from some of the most famous literary minds of the ancient Roman culture. Edith Hamilton is attempting to show us a side of Rome that was previously unseen. She uses these stories to try and explain what the ideas, attitudes and beliefs are that make up the “Roman Way.” Summary The Roman Way is basically an informal history of Roman civilization as Edith Hamilton interprets the writings of the greatest literary figures from around the time of 200 B.C. to 100 A.D. Some of these writers include Cicero, with his vast assortment of letters; Catullus, the romantic poet; and Horace, the storyteller of an unkind and greedy Rome. They are three affluent white men from around the same period of time, although each of them had very different styles of writings and ideologies. In my opinion this book is not the evaluation of how approximately fifty million people from two thousand years ago thought about the world that they lived in at the time, but about how a few dozen men wrote about it, in a viewpoint illustrative of only a few thousand. In order to support her view, Edith Hamilton tries to bring these people together, threading together their common thoughts and ideologies. Save for the fact that this book only represents a handful of Roman citizens and the way that they saw the world in which they lived, I do feel like I got a better understanding of the “Roman Way” and the way that life was back then. Livy is a Roman historian who wrote the “Ab Urbe Condita Libri” during the reign of Augustus. Augusts had hundreds of writer’s record stories about the greatness and virtue of the Romans. Note that the Romans create stories about their generals, such as Scipio and Cincinnatus, to set an example of how further generations of general sand statesman should act. In the first sixteen books Livy describes the origin of the Roman people, while conveying humility and greatness of the founders from Aeneas to Romulus.
Tacitus is considered by many to be the greatest Roman historians to ever live. Clearly his knowledge and skills are fully demonstrated in his writings Agricola and Germania. Tacitus captures his readers attention witnessing different ethnic groups and there various customs from each other. Agricola focusses on Tacitus father in-law Julius Agricola. Because of Agricola Tacitus saw ethnography on the many people of the ancient Britain. In Germania Tacitus writes about the different Germanic groups of the time. Tacitus in both of his writings portrays the cultures, traditions, and establishments of many different ethnic groups. Cornelius Tacitus was born 56 AD in southern Gaul which is now modern Providence. In 75 AD he moved to Rome and became an orator. A year later he married the daughter of the consul Cn. Julius Agricola. Tacitus is best known writings included Agricola (97-98), Germania (98), The Histories (110), and The Annals. Harold Mattingly (1884-1964) translated Agricola and Germania. J.B. The Roman Republic (Res Pvblica Romana) was a form of republican government that was established in 509 BCE to replace the monarchy government that had reigned over Rome since the founding in 753BCE (Steele, 2012). The Failure of the Roman Republic was inevitable as it was an unjust system of government and it was left vulnerable after the attempted changes instigated by the Gracchi, as the Gracchi exposed the weaknesses in the political structure allowing future politicians to manipulate the system. The sources used throughout the essay, which include Plutarch, Appian, Florus and Velleius, will need to be examined closely as each source will demonstrate different views on the Gracchi, as the authors purpose of writing will differ. The Gracchi had set out to change Rome for the better, however in the process; they exposed the internal flaws of the government which resulted in the beginning of the decline of the Roman Republic.
Livy’s The Rise of Rome serves as the ultimate catalogue of Roman history, elaborating on the accomplishments of each king and set of consuls through the ages of its vast empire. In the first five books, Livy lays the groundwork for the history of Rome and sets forth a model for all of Rome to follow. For him, the “special and salutary benefit of the study of history is to behold evidence of every sort of behaviour set forth as on a splendid memorial; from it you may select for yourself and for your country what to emulate, from it what to avoid, whether basely begun or basely concluded.” (Livy 4). Livy, however, denies the general populace the right to make the same sort of conclusions that he made in constructing his histories. His biased representation of Romulus and Tarquin Superbus, two icons of Roman history, give the readers a definite model of what a Roman should be, instead of allowing them to come to their own conclusion.

Tacitus’ Agricola, though it traverses a significant part of Rome’s conquest of Britain, is primarily about the man from whom the book takes it title. Tacitus used British conquest to show the reader Agricola’s many virtues, and he explained why Romans should strive to follow Agricola’s example. At the same time, however, Tacitus echoed Agricola’s virtues to Rome, which, before and during the writing of his book, endured several tyrannical emperors. Tacitus’ book, besides praising an individual, suggested hope for an improved future to many troubled Romans when the virtues of the empire had decayed, and freedom that they once loved had largely disappeared.
