The characters in the movie ,”I’m Alive” showed unimaginable amounts of resiliency, strength, and leadership. When one wanted to give up the others pushed him on. A quick breakdown on the story is a rugby team was flying to Chile, they crashed in the Andes mountains. Some of the people in the plane died off impact and others survived the crash. Nando Parrado the man who led the expeditions showed many leadership qualities, he showed sacrifice, commitment, and confidence throughout the 70 days he was in the mountains. One of the first things we find out about Nando is that he is the rugby team captain, so we already know that many of the other players respect and look up to him, he was elected as leader of the expeditions and also elected leader of the main trek down the mountain that would lead to the rest of the group getting found. Nando showed confidence when he expressed to the rest of the group that he wanted to go out and explore the area to try and discover where they were at and to scout ways to get down the mountain to find help. When he doesn't find it he tries again. He is willing to commit his time and effort and persistently tries until the goal is reached. Nando also shows commitment when he decides to hike all the way out of the mountains into the nearby village, doing the task that no one thought was possible. The man on the horse that finds him is amazed that they are alive, the mountaineering expert is amazing at the impressive descent down the mountain. The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Furthermore, a leader must be supportive of and willing to help their peers build their own strengths. The attributes listed above represent only a small subset of what makes an outstanding leader. Yet,
What is a key attribute of a strong leader? Would he be strong, bold, courageous, fearless? Magellan, a portuguese captain during the fifteen hundreds crossed the world through the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. Ferdinand Magellan did not deserve defense. He would treat his crewmen unfairly, put himself first, and was distracted from his goal. (Document A, B, C, D, E)
Many people possess leadership qualities although they don’t rule a country. Meriwether Lewis, the official leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition has been called “undoubtedly the greatest pathfinder this country has ever known.” Just like Hazel, Meriwether Lewis led a group of followers into unknown territory. The two guides faced many difficult situations that they were able to overcome since they had the qualities of a notable leader. Both of the journeys were rough, but because of the brave leaders both expeditions were successful.
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
This discussion will focus on leadership as described by Robert Dees in The Resilience Trilogy, Resilient Leaders text. The points made in the book can be personally related. The three most important concepts learned from chapter 1 and 2 are tribulation, risk management, and selflessness. It is crucial for anyone is seeking to delve into leadership that everything will not happen as planned all the time. After a leader experience failure, knowing the avenues to take to regain a solid footing is also key to successful leadership. Often leaders who are unaware of available resources fold and give up. In the military profession, when someone gets knock down they get up brush themselves off and get back in the fight.
...ntrast to the stereotypical “hero” stories where a reactive call to action is committed even though they previously failed to show leadership skills. Also I discovered that the parties involved shared similar leadership traits and each movie character can be easily traced and tied to multiple theories or skills. This shows the success of the group was almost predetermined before the accident occurred due to the experience, knowledge, and skill sets these men offered. Finally I learned that recreations of true events often correlate to actual leadership traits, which evokes me to revisit other films based on real occurrences and observe them in a deeper manner; provoking further insight and expansion into my mind about how these events parallel through leadership and quantify the importance the traits and theories presented above can maintain in all aspects of life.
Leaders are made, not born. Whether you lead on the field, in a classroom, within a family, or at work you must build a solid foundation of skills that you can use to lead others to achieve phenomenal results. Emerging trends in the United States alone have a significant impact on what we expect from others. As we, experience a fast-paced ever-changing world there is one character that has remained consistent and necessary. Leadership. Herman Boone, one of the main characters in the movie, “Remember the Titans” said, "Without character, we have no legacy." (http://www.umich.edu/~urecord/0405/Jan24_05/15.shtml) “Remember the Titans” a story about the racial integration of two coaches, a team, and a community. During the course of the
According to Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristics and Skills Assessment, the interpretation of scores for perception of what makes a good leader gave me the following results: good perception of a good leader and the scores for perception of your own ability to lead resulted in low perceived leadership ability for myself (Grossman and Valiga, 2013). With these results, I have concluded that I have low confidence in my leadership skills and ability. This would be an area of improvement needing work on my part. Part of being a good leader is being confident in one’s abilities and skills. Who would want to follow a leader who has n...
An extreme environment takes strength, both emotional and physical, but even so the odds are not in a survivor's favor. With that said, there are those who rise to the occasion. Nando Parrado and his crew, from "I Will Survive", and Aron Ralston , from "127 Hours", are evidence. Nando and his crew had survived a plane crash, and continued to survive in the bitter, cold Andes for 72 days. While, Aron survived a 800 boulder crushing his arm, trapping him in an isolated slot canyon, alone, and without resources for five and have days. Struggling to make decisions, that challenge their beliefs and goes against their instincts, and having to survive in an extreme environment in their particular situation are the two major challenges Nando and Aron face as they stretch themselves to adapt, surviving only by clinging to their will to survive.

I do have to admit that sometimes this can be extremely difficult and may leave one feeling a bit vulnerable. Commitment is the ability to take a risk and to accept the possibility of disappointment or pain. Again, I have to agree that commitment can be demanding, but to look on the bright side, it can also be rewarding. To be able to stay in ...
Commitment is the “‘the extent to which each partner intends to persist in the relationship, feels psychologically attached to it, and exhibits long-term orientation toward it”’ (Kelley, 129). –Work for my good and our good.
Self-confidence is one of the most important qualities that determine a good leader. Self-confidence is the belief in oneself and of one’s powers and abilities. It is the attitude that people possess that allows them to have positive views and to trust their own abilities. Self-confidence is an extremely important attribute to have. Leadership is all about having the confidence to make decisions. If they are afraid to make and commit to their decisions, all of the communication and authority they have will make no difference. They need to guts to motivate others, and if they waver even slightly, their followers will start to doubt them. An example of leaders having self-confidence is the students at school who organized their own clubs. They have the courage to pitch new ideas, and are not afraid to talk to other students about it. Teachers are natural born leaders. Everyday, they have to face hundreds of students to lead them onto the correct path through learning. Without self-confidence, they will not be able to do their job.
There is nothing better than having good characteristics. Everyone has different kinds of characteristics. Understanding our characteristics is extremely useful. It helps us to avoid the bad ones and to develop the good ones. We can take active steps to become the person we want to be, and we can make positive changes in our characteristics. Most of characteristics can be learned with practice. Because nobody likes to be around a person who has bad characteristics, it can affect our daily life and friendships. Likewise, lack of good characteristics such as self-confidence can hinder us from achieving our goals. To become effective in our life, we need to develop some good personal characteristics. I know some
Characteristics a feature or quality belonging to a person, place or thing and serving to identify it. There are many personal characteristics that can define a person as an individual; some characteristics determined if a person is nice, disrespectful, intelligent, or not intelligent but it determines how a person interprets you. I believe that every individual has integrity as one of their characteristics, but my top three characteristics are Integrity, Compassion, and hard-working and for the person who carried me throughout my whole life “my brother” his characteristics would be his responsibility.
