“I am Malala” by Malala Yousafzai is a beautiful and hard breaking book at the same time. This book is an autobiography that describes the author childhood and her support on the right for girls to have an education. Through this autobiography, Malala describes the restrictions that are imposed on females in her country. There are many that believe that woman of Pakistan should not be educated in the other hands there are a few that oppose this idea. Malala’s support on education for girls almost cost her life, since she was shot by the Taliban. From a multicultural perspective Malala’s story touches on topics such; culture shock, discrimination within your own culture, oppression, religion, family and woman’s right. It was not until later in her life that fear started to become part of her life. In the book, she describes how first she fears for the life of her father due to his outspoken belief on the girl’s right for an education. She mentions several times that even thought she was unconsciously afraid she would tell herself that the Taliban would not go after little girls. Malala reveals in her book that she always thought that the Taliban would come after her father, not her. In her autobiography, Malala shows her admiration for her father. Malala’s father was a school teacher that works very and hard to fulfill his dream of building a school. His focus shifted once his first-born child was a girl. Ziauddin Yousafzai Malala’s father thinks that girls should have the same opportunity as boys to get educated and selected any professional field desired. Bringing this information to the classroom from a counselor perspective would be done in the developmental lesson and classroom activity. One activity can be, selecting one section of the book “I Am Malala” and asking the students to write their feeling in a form of a poem. These are examples of my own reactions to certain sections of the book. It would be an opportunity to bring awareness to students on how things are different and similar in other parts of the world.
