The purpose of this case study was to see if formal project management can be implemented to the functional organization of the Hyten Corporation. This would not be an easy task due to the difficulties that some departments of the Hyten Company would face. A seminar was administered by the new project manager to enlighten the managers and workers with meanings of formal project management, and so he can meet and hear different opinions of every department. This action led to knowing the function of every department, which would help him to execute the formal project management in an effective manner. Based on this case study the Hyten Corporation will benefit from implementing formal project management. Action #1: Training in project management. As stated in the case, these organizations were at different levels of project management maturity, including two of them that were “clueless” about project management. As their goal was to implement an enterprise project management methodology, training in project management represent the first step in this endeavor. It will also help them to create a general and common understanding of what project management is and how it should be implemented, as the other tow companies that knew and implemented project management, exert their implementation in a different way.

The organizational structure refers to the system of distribution of work roles within various employees and management levels and the way the various functions are coordinated within the individuals and departments in order to achieve the organization’s goals . The chapter ‘Project Management in the Automotive Industry’ by Christophe Midler and Christian Navarre from The Wiley Guide to Managing Projects (September 2004) traces the inception and transformation of project management in the automotive industry from the post-war period to the early years of the new millennium. It is an interesting article which categorizes the period into four phases on the basis of organizational structure and strategy pertinent to most of the automotive manufacturers in each era. This classification helps the authors elaborate on the change in corporate structures and relationships within the organization and with their subcontractors over the years. Examples of leading car manufacturers have shown how project management has developed into an essential aspect of managing complex activities, and how the automotive industry has steadily evolved from being function-oriented and bureaucratic to being innovation-oriented and modular.
