(HOOK) What does it take to escape a home country, get out off a remote canyon, and survive being hunted? Determination. (BACKGROUND) Hyeonseo Lee escaped her homeland for a better life, a boulder in a remote canyon trapped Aron Ralston’s arm, and Rainsford was hunted by another human being, named Zaroff on island in the middle of the Caribbean sea. (THESIS) All of them however managed to survive because of the most important survival trait, determination.
(Trans) To begin, one survivor that showed determination was Hyeonseo Lee. For example on page two of the article, "My escape From North Korea," Lee states "...even though adjusting to my new life was not easy, I made a plan. " Lee had already escaped from North Korea to China, but she was still in danger. She was determined to be safe and have freedom, so she decided to risk her life again and escape from China. When Lee arrived in South Korea, she had to start her life over again. This was difficult and took determination

to help her not to give up. Also, on page two Lee informs that she had just settled down when she found out her family was in danger and had to go rescue them. Although Lees new life in South Korea had just begun she had to travel back to China and help her family escape North Korea. She had the determination of bringing her family to freedom. Her and her family faced many obstacles when traveling back to South Korea, but made it safely because of their determination. Another survivor that possessed determination was Aron Ralston.
For instance on page two of the acritical "Trapped", Ralston who was climbing alone explains the many methods he used to get his arm freed. Instead of losing hope, Ralston was determined to free his arm from being trapped under the boulder, he quickly tried using different tools to move the boulder. Even if it didn’t work the first time Ralston kept working and experimenting with new methods because he was determined to survive. Another example is on page five, Ralston explains, "I push the knife into my wrist watching the skin stretch inward, until the point finally pierces and sinks to its hilt." Since Ralston was so determined he went through the pain and suffering of cutting off his own arm to survive. He could of stayed their and waited for the possibility of rescue that was slim or suffered a less painful death, but Ralston was determined to survive no matter how much the pain. This latter paid off making him a
survivor. In addition to Lee and Ralston showing determination to survive so did Rainsford. On page 22 lines 622- 640 the story talks about Rainsford digging a trap to kill his predator Zaroff, even though he was coming quickly Rainsford managed to kill one of his dogs. This is an example of Rainsford's determination because if he wasn't determined to survive he would have given up turned himself in. If Rainsford had done this because of lack of determination instead of fighting to even out the odds he would have been killed. However Rainsford was determined, him killing a dog that would have killed him helped him to survive. Rainsford also shows determination in the following; "Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds . Then he leaped far out into the sea( page 23 lines 681-682)." That showed determination because Rainsford knew he would die if he faced the hounds and Zaroff at the same time and he was determined to live. This lead to Rainsford's jump because he knew he would have a better chance of survival the way. All in all determination is a needed trait to survive. This stands true through Lee’s escape, Ralston’s injury, and Rainsford’s hunting nightmare. Having determination can help overcome obstacles and be a survivor.
One conflict seen in Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption is the conflict between man and nature, which Louie, Phil, and Mac faced while lost at sea. As the men spent countless days at sea their points of view about the situation “were becoming self- fulfilling” (Hillenbrand 155). The
Murder Could you believe or even imagine a charming, handsome and popular high school boy killing his ex-girl-friend? This is the case involving Adnan Syed in the murder of Hae Min Lee in 1999. "On January 13, 1999, a girl named Hae Min Lee, a senior at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County, Maryland, disappeared. A month later, her body turned up in a city park.
In the story, A Long Walk to Waters, written by Linda Sue Park, the readers are introduced to many different individuals that were able to survive challenging environments. Those individuals used those factors, perseverance, cooperation, and independence. Those factors have allowed individuals to make it past through the harsh environments throughout their journey. Perseverance shows how those individuals kept on going without giving up. Meanwhile, cooperation represents how struggling individuals are able to work together in order to achieve their goal. Last but not least independence shows how individuals can conquer a hurdle by him or herself.
Mental strength can change the perspective of a survival situation, making it very valuable in the psychology of surviving. Mental strength, as seen in Caroline Alexander’s “The Voyage of the James Caird,” can seem as the only way the crew of the James Caird truly made it to their destination. When the crew found reassurance of nearby land they felt more at ease,“Cape Pigeons such as they had admired so many months before at Grytviken […] whose presence hinted at land.” (Alexander 187). The crew of the James Caird may have not been as optimistic if they did not spot these birds and used them as a symbol of survival. In “The Value of a Sherpa Life” many accounts of Sherpa mistreatment and endangerment is recalled. Sherpas are described as “Everest’s
During the Ming and Qing Dynasty, under the circumstance of which the absolute monarchy reached its peak progressively, two trends of thoughts appeared in China:
Just like these two World War II survivors, Louie Zamperini from Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand demonstrates the will power and determination it takes to survive and overcome life-threatening obstacles. Louie’s life was a constant battle; he endured 47 days stranded on a raft and endless nights as a prisoner in Japanese camps (Laura Hillenbrand). He had every reason to break down, but with all those challenges, he rose to the occasion. Hillenbrand states that “without dignity, identity is erased” meaning that without all the battles that Louie went through, he wouldn’t be the person he is today (Hillenbrand 182). All the hardships throughout someone’s life build them into a stronger person, not defining them, but impacting them to do better. It is safe to say that many Americans have faced countless number of problems and inspire everyday people like myself to keep
Award-Winning author Laura Hillenbrand writes of the invigorating survival story of Louie Zamperini in her best selling book, Unbroken. Louie Zamperini was an ambitious, record-breaking Olympic runner when he was drafted into the American army as an airman during World War II. On the mission that led him to embark on a journey of dire straits, Louie’s plain crashed into the Pacific Ocean, leaving only him and two other crewmen as survivors. Stranded on a raft in shark infested waters, without any resources or food, and drifting toward enemy Japanese territory, the men now have to face their ultimate capture by Japanese, if they survive that long. Louie responded to his desperation with dexterity, undergoing his plight with optimism and confidence, rather than losing hope. In this memorable novel, Hillenbrand uses a vivid narrative voice to divulge Louie’s tale of endurance, and proves that the resilience of the human mind can triumph through adversity.
The protagonist, Rainsford, in the short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, by Richard Connell is characterized to make an effective protagonist. The characteristics that make Rainsford an effective protagonist are how he is brave, intelligent, and a resourceful character. Rainsford is a brave character as he never lets his panic consume him and he learns to calm himself. Rainsford ponders, ‘“I will not lose my nerve. I will not.” He slid down from the tree, and struck off again into the woods. His face was set and he forced the machinery of his mind to function”’. When Rainsford is on the first day of the hunt he calms himself down and sets his mind on the task at hand, demonstrating his bravery to not give up, a benefit to being an effective

For example in the story “Rogue Wave” by Theodore Taylor is stated that”Four times Scoot needed to dive, once for each dog; and working underwater was at least five times as difficult as trying to turn them in usual circumstances. She’d aim the light and rest it to illuminate the windows. Finally, all the dogs were loose and she rose once again. This time, after filling her lungs to bursting, she went down and pushed on the starboard window. It cracked a little, but the outside sea pressure resisted and she had to surface again. Sully sat down, almost giving up hope. How long the air pocket would hold up was anybody’s guess. The boat had settled at least six inches in the last two hours. It might not last into the night. On her sixth dive Scoot found a way to brace her feet against the ceiling ribs. She pushed with all her strength, and this time the window opened. Almost out of breath, she quickly pushed her body through and the Old Sea Dog released her.”. This means that Scott took a bold action so she would escape the “OLD SEA DOG” even though she could have died from drowning. This matters because she accomplished surviving underwater with only a air pocket to keep her alive reunited with scully which was trying to help scoot escape but failed miserably because he didn’t have the courage to break one of the window to help her escape. It is
H) In the jungle, under an enormous tree log made of oak wood that smells like old newspaper, and you’re looking at a night so full of stars that the darkness seems transparent. Soon you hear the sound of an old 90’s stereo playing the Beastie Boys’ greatest hits with the music so loud that your ears pop and they start aching as funky beat the inches closer and closer. Then you hear the noisy voices modern American family calling an ambulance and you know that you’ve survived. B) Being a survivor takes a lot of heart and soul of you. Just ask Hyeonseo Lee, Aron Ralston, and Alison Dilaurentis and Cece Drake off of Pretty Little Liars. Lee had to survive without her family, Ralston had to survive being trapped under a rock, and Alison and Cece had to survive mental and physical pain. T) Lee’s courage, Ralston’s clever, and Alison and Cece’s endurance made them survivors.
Her spry, Timberland-clad foot planted itself upon a jagged boulder, motionless, until her calf muscles tightened and catapulted her small frame into the next stride. Then Sara's dance continued, her feet playing effortlessly with the difficult terrain. As her foot lifted from the ground, compressed mint-colored lichen would spring back into position, only to be crushed by my immense boot, struggling to step where hers had been. My eyes fixated on the forest floor, as fallen trees, swollen roots, and unsteady rocks posed constant threats for my exhausted body. Without glancing up I knew what was ahead: the same dense, impenetrable green that had surrounded us for hours. My throat prickled with unfathomable thirst, as my long-empty Nalgene bottle slapped mockingly at my side. Gnarled branches snared at my clothes and tore at my hair, and I blindly hurled myself after Sara. The portage had become a battle, and the ominously darkening sky raised the potential for casualties. Gritting my teeth with gumption, I refused to stop; I would march on until I could no longer stand.
A determination is a driving force that helps people through rough times in their lives. Without determination, people would no longer strive for their goals. Throughout the short story, ‘Then Later, His Ghost,’ Sarah Hall shows how strength and determination can get you through these tough times. This theme is made clear through the severe setting the characters are faced with and her use of symbolism.
...determination by not giving up even if she was faced with defeat or rejection, a proof on how she is the image of resilient women.
