Everyone is expected to use their writing skills either for homework or note taking. The first week of college and I'm already having up to 3 pages of notes for each class. I would like to be more organized in my writing. Although there are more things I would like to change about my writing, I'm satisfied with the way I write.
In my previous schools, teachers would complain about how my writing was too small to read. After changing my writing, I started to write a bit bigger, the teacher would complain that it was sloppy to read. I was only focusing on the style of my writing instead of the proper way of how to write. Therefore, I feel that my writing skills aren't were there supposed to be right now.
The main thing that I would like to learn
Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
When writing a five paragraph essay, there are five steps one must fallow in order to attain perfection, these steps include understanding the question, brainstorming, writing a rough copy, revising, and creating a final draft. The first and most important step is understanding the topic. The topic of the essay is what the essay will be about and if this is misunderstood, the whole essay will be off course. The second step, brainstorming, will help organize thoughts and ideas so they flow amiably. There are many different ways to brainstorm, some of the most helpful are making a web of ideas, making a list of ideas, or creating a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the conviction. All these ideas will be related to the topic at hand. For example, if the essays topic is about how the earth is affected by global warming, then the brainstorming ideas might include the ozone lair being reduced or how global climate has raised. In the past three months I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the semester comes to an end I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Some how after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into the papers that I wrote this semester, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas, with the attitude of, if I could just become better in those then I would become a better writer. With help from an awesome teacher and a reliable tutor I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.
Throughout my years in high school I have never been the best at writing. I have struggled and failed numerous times and I just didn 't think I would ever get any better when it came down to writing in my English classes. I always had to ask my parents to help me comprehend words, phrases and also how to pronounce certain words. For example my junior year of high school it was time to prepare ourselves for the SAT and ACT testing which are standardized tests that every student must take if they want to further their education in college. When I took the test for the first time I felt like I failed miserable because my score was so low. I received a 14 my very first time taking the ACT, and my lowest score was in reading. I was so embarrassed
Over my career of schooling my writing has changed dramatically at times and very little at others. Through my years of schooling people have determined my main weaknesses and strengths that I should work on with my writing. My biggest weakness is writing introductions and conclusions they must be so complicated and require so much thought to be defined as good. I excel at writing body paragraphs and explaining all the facts that back up your main ideas though.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. I thought I had mastered the ability of becoming an effective and efficient writer when I was in high school, but to my surprise I would later learn that there was much more for me to learn about writing. I did not always consider myself a good writer. In fact, it was something I had to work at in order to improve. As I continued my education in college, I gained more and more knowledge about writing. I learned different forms and styles of writing and a variety of details along with basic fundamentals that accommodated the specific classes had to write for. I always seemed to struggle with sentence structure and clarity. My teachers would often ask me what I was referring to in the paper or what was the main point from my statements. I hope
As a student, I feel that I have many writing weaknesses. I know that on my own, and because teachers have told me so. Some of the complications I face with writing is not using enough body paragraphs, forgetting a thesis statement, lack of word choice, punctuation errors, and etc. I am unaware at times of my mistakes, but I always try to correct them.
My overall writing skills are decent; there is an allowance for improvement. From an early age, I was required to write summarized essays. As children and young adults, my brother and I read an article from the newspaper daily and were required to give a brief report on what we read, and on occasion, it was in written form. Therefore, my critical thinking and writing skills are refined. I was exposed to the APA style of writing in my undergraduate and master degree courses. At times, I still must refer to my manual, although I still consider writing in APA style a strength.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
A mentally disabled but diligent female high school student attends a tutoring session at the learning center to work on a classroom writing assignment. Despite encouragement and prompts from the tutor, the student is unable to write. She states that she hates writing and declares that she will take a zero for the grade rather than complete the assignment.
But practice alone is not enough, another tool that could be significant is constructive feedback. Feedback from a peer, supervisor and course instructor can all offer input about both the style and content of your writing. After having someone examine and correct a piece of your writing, it is time to rewrite. There a few things to be mindful of when rewriting your material, such as someone giving their honest criticism about your writing, and you being able to receive the analysis without getting your feelings hurt.
There are many ways to learn the art of reading and writing. You can learn from people, games, tv shows, and much more. Not only do you learn these skills but you also continue to learn new techniques and methods throughout your entire life. Although I have learned a majority of these skills at an early age, I am still learning new ways on how to read and write today. When I started to develop these skills, I was just learning how to recognize letters and how to hold a pencil.
Writing has always been one of the things that I’m passionate about. Whenever I have something on my mind, I would jot it down or type it in my notes. No matter how small or pathetic it seems, I would always write it down, because you never know when you’re going to go back to it and create something grand, out of inspiration. People would think that a person like me would write down poems or novel ideas. That’s completely true, but I also write down recipes, grocery lists, hate lists and literally anything that comes to my mind. I’m the type of person that does not like to miss anything, forget anything and likes to include everything. People would say I’m a perfectionist or a control freak and as much as I would hate to admit that, it is true. While these traits of mine might hinder my writing process, during this school year I learned how to embrace them.
My overall organization of my writing has improved over the semester. This is evident when looking at my directional draft of Project 1, compared to my later projects. I was able to improve my organization first and foremost creating an outline and getting all my ideas down and them piecing them together. Once I collect all the data and ideas, I break them down into paragraphs where each one has a specific topic I wish to talk about. From there, I create topic and transitional sentences and place the paragraphs in order. I learned from Professor Casey McArdle that the size of a paragraph relates to its importance. If you have a long paragraph, then a short either expand upon the second idea or get rid of it. Organizing your paper properly allows the writing to ultimately “flow” better and will help your reader/audience through the piece.
