Whether or not a student should have to serve detention after acting up in school can be a heated debate. Some may argue that there is no other way to address the student’s behavior, and some may contrast that argument by saying that detention does not correct the student’s misbehavior. Different schools have different detention requirements. Some schools do not allow cellular devices and computers, but some do. That is a major difference that vastly affects if a detention can correct a student’s behavior or not. Although detention may be efficient in some cases, meditation is a better way of correcting the student’s behavior rather than merely punishing them for their wrongful actions. There are a few differences between detention and meditation rooms in schools. Detention has a negative connotation attached to it, but many students do not mind attending it once or twice; it does no harm. Electronics and social media play a huge role in the youth of America today whether one wants to deny it or not. Students spend multiple hours a day staring at their mobile devices on social media or texting their friends. In addition, a lot of schools allow either a computer or a mobile device while their students serve detentions. This is a problem. If a student is required to go to a detention and they are allowed to surf the internet for the duration of the detention, what behavioral actions are being corrected? Detention should be a time where the student is allowed to think about their actions and why they were given a detention.
