Honors English III taught me many skills that prove to benefit grades within all of my present and possibly future curriculum. I observed how my writing abilities became increasingly easier and less time consuming when completing a strong paragraph. Learning unfamiliar concepts displays the ability to adapt and thrive in new situations, which will be helpful in future career fields. This year I discovered a sense of pride through my accomplishments in the classroom, whether it be note taking or receiving an A on a test. I will miss sophomore English class, but I am excited to move on to junior year and further my skills in order to implement them to the real world. During the second semester of the 2018 school year, the class read an intriguing …show more content…
book by William Shakespeare called The Merchant of Venice. I noticed how my assignments related to this unit improved concerning writing techniques and methods. In order to feature this fact inside of my In-Class Essay, I decided to create an outline before I began writing. I gained the simple skill of organization. Outlines must be written carefully and quickly in order to emphasize certain points in an essay. The Merchant of Venice In-Class Essay taught me how important and useful a premeditated plan is when composing structure for a thesis, body paragraph, and conclusion. My abilities as a writer have improved greatly, such as cohesiveness and revision. During The Merchant of Venice Unit, I grew academically and gained more independence from teachers. Surprisingly, the thoughts of mercy and justice will always linger in my mind since they play a prominent role in my moral code. I plan to apply the practice of mercy and justice to by coinciding it with morality to my life moving forward. Writing about mercy and justice helped my literary and word usage skills. The Merchant of Venice In-Class Essay kept the ball rolling for my future career and strengthened my writing abilities whether it concerns short emails to future clients, or important presentations for a creative board. Allowing my mind to adapt to new situations will open numerous doors in the professional world. Mrs.
Smith’s curriculum introduced multiple unfamiliar projects that I unexpectedly did well on. A prime example of a lesson I learned was shown through my Literary Analysis: Virginia Woolf Biography. It proved hard work and proper grammar will allow high grades and academic growth to occur. While grading my biography of Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Smith noted my lack of strong verbs, and how I needed to correct them in order for my skills to improve. I decided to fix this issue and address my weak points by fixing them and making a note for all future assignments. Unfortunately, I did procrastinate towards the end as we got closer to the due date. This taught me how much anxiety and stress putting off an assignment can cause me to have and I will prepare accordingly to avoid this in the future. As a result of learning how to comprehend negative feedback, I am capable of remembering the steps needed to produce a top notch paper. While I look towards the future, I picture myself in a traveling photography and journalism position. I realized through my literary analysis the importance of being able to acclimate to foreign projects and avoid procrastination. Relationships are another useful way to exercise my enhanced understanding. For example, with a friend, I am completely oblivious to certain situations and by applying problem solving skills, I can aid in a friend’s
predicament. The Macbeth Unit provided me with the perfect opportunity to step up to the plate and show pride in my newfound talent for not taking. Honestly, I have not always know how to compose detailed annotations, as a result, the first semester of English class was tough, and I experienced difficulties when studying for a test or quiz. Luckily I learned how to catch up and improve my skills during Macbeth, even though it proves to uphold a high standard for comprehension. I discovered the ultimate technique when taking notes by paying close attention to characters and their surroundings. The Macbeth Unit laid a stepping stone for my future note taking in my academic career and personal life. I aim to practice superb note taking skills in all of my future classes, including high school and college. Personally, note taking benefits me when I need to remember important tasks or dates, and if I do not take notes I forget and experience the consequences. Through Macbeth, my notes are a masterpiece and I am extremely proud of how thoroughly detailed they have become. I have mastered recognizing literary techniques, specific events, character flaws, and symbols by writing in depth notes. I realized I am a visual student who needs a document or piece of paper in order to recall significant points from a book or lesson. Macbeth allowed me to study more efficiently and expand my note taking abilities. Annotations taught me how to show pride in my work and how I can apply this to life beyond the classroom. For example, I can use this skill in my social life in order to meet to friends and remember the important qualities about a person. Looking towards the future I realize, with the skills I have learned and improved through Honors English III, I can now grasp new ideas, adapt to unfamiliar situations, and handle complicated relationships. Each individual project taught me many lessons about myself and how I am able to going forward. Honestly, sophomore year was challenging, but I powered through and I came out with a greater sense of independence and work ethic, thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Smith.
... the value of organization and planning. The structure provided by the instructor truly helped me break down very large projects into smaller, more approachable assignments. For example, for each essay due, there were smaller deadlines that needed to be met. As I kept up with those smaller assignments, the actual large due date was not intimidating and I was able to handle the stress better. I will definitely use this approach in my future academic writing assignments.
Happy New Year and the second semester of the school year. The first semester was a test on how students would blend into the new academics. Honors English was a great choice I made in middle school and I would recommend it to any incoming freshman. I have learned new ways to create claims and the proper way to set up paragraphs. Learning the way to set up paragraphs has improved my writing skills, even out of the english classroom. English comes in handy in the World Geography classroom as I have learned and may be useful in the future.
The purpose of the English 250 course was to help students like myself realize the importance of all aspects of WOVE in their daily lives and future careers. In addition to writing papers, we practiced slideshow presentations, discussion panels, web design, and professional emails. The assignments and in-class activities for English 250 formed me into a skilled communicator in the WOVE areas of visual and oral communication, and I plan to continue practicing these skills through the communication that is necessary for future leadership opportunities.
Before this quarter started I was fairly confident that I had what it took to ace English 101. After the first paper, I realized I was mistaken. Throughout this quarter I have had numerous problems with my writing that proved I needed to do a little more studying to help take my writing to the college level. Although I did not fail any of my papers, there was plenty of room for improvement. All the areas I needed to improve on are all areas that I think every English 101 student should know. I believe that every student at the college level should know how to cite sources correctly, know how to use good transitions, and know how to properly elaborate their examples.
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
I am Stuart Keith from your B-day third block AP English 12 class, and I am looking forward to a great senior year in your class. This year, I am planning on dual enrolling in AP English in addition to taking the AP exam in May. My goals for this school year include maintaining straight A's as I have throughout my entire high school career, get into college, and fix my studying and procrastinating problems. After high school, I want to attend college and intend on majoring in civil or mechanical engineering. In school my strongest subject is math. Meanwhile, I have found that I struggle the most in English because I procrastinate when reading books and need to improve my writing. The one thing that worries me the most about this year is the
In one semester of English 101 I have learned so many things about writing. I used to believe that writing was just putting words on paper, but have since learned that writing is much more than that, I now understand that writing is a way of exploring my mind and of making connections with other writers and readers. Over the course of the semester I have been learning to write in a way that uses the skills of reflection, critical thinking, and much more. I have used these skills to compose two academic essays that I am submitting in a portfolio to determine my final grade in English 101. In order to have a passing final grade my essays need to display skills I have learned in the course that are required by the Portfolio Assessment Rubric or
As a future educator, I am willing to learn and improve. Although there were assignments that I found challenging, I was willing to ask for assistance and work my best in overcoming and completing those assignments. An assignment that I found challenging this semester was having to write a book review on “Inside Mrs. B’s Classroom”, by Leslie Baldacci. Although the reading itself was not difficult, what I found challenging was having to time manage when I would read the book, and having to write my first essay in APA style. However, I knew that assignment would benefit me in the future in the manner of learning how to write a paper in APA style and practicing my time management skills. Considering the qualities of a leader, I believe I succeeded in my field experience and my collaboration skills. In my field experience I was able to learn the importance of listening to every student and the teaching of procedures. Furthermore, this semester I was able to work in collaboration with my peers. For instance, in my seminar class we had a group presentation, and we were able to excel in organizing and presenting. Additionally, I was also able to work in collaboration to create and present the micro-teaching lesson. These assignments were able to be completed not only by my peer’s collaboration, but my input and effort as well. Lastly, as a person of
Freshman year is where the foundation of a long lasting education begins. With english as a core class, the subjects we’ve covered have given a great base to build off of, especially as honors students. However, things weren’t always easy: critical thinking and extra effort was needed to accommodate for challenging concepts. Through it all we prevailed and have learned a multitude of new topics. We covered an expanse of different types of literature and dabbled into the world of grammar. Here’s my rendition and perspective on what I’ve learned in honors English 9.
A challenge I was facing in first semester was completing my assignments on time. This was a challenge for me because I always tried to complete the homework at the last minute, like assigned chapters we had to read from the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, and I wouldn’t make enough time to complete the work. This was a challenge for me because I don’t normally read in my free time. Another confrontation I had was completing final drafts on the computer. I had trouble finishing these assignments also because I wouldn’t make enough time for the work, like the final draft we had to complete from the novel To Kill A Mockingbird.
In summary, I had an enjoyable time in my first college English class. I pushed myself as diligently as I could and learned much more than I thought I would. In addition to, my strengths grew stronger and my weaknesses improved as well. I acknowledge I still have some techniques and skills to work on; however, I am willing to put the time in and cannot wait to take English in the future. Writing is an everlasting skill that will be an enormous asset to me; in addition to my future classes, and my career as
During the course of this class, I have had the opportunity to read literature from authors who come from different backgrounds and places in the world. Some of the stories and poetry we read were straight forward while others were confusing and sometimes required a second look. But one thing is clear, it changed the way I think about literature in a few ways that I wasn’t expecting. Three works in particular stand out in my mind. “ I Wont Let You Go” by Rabindranath Tagore, “To New York” by Leopold Senghor, and Pedro Peramo by Juan Rulfo all had an impact on my thinking for similar yet different reasons. They all incorporate their cultural backgrounds into their work through the setting of their pieces. They also compose their pieces in a way that makes you want to research their history to find the deeper meaning. Finally, a couple of the authors write about things they are emotionally connected to. Some of the examples we will look at, really opened my eyes to going beyond a superficial understanding of literature.
Taking a course in linguistics and studying the features of language has changed my perception of language and sparked my interest in some of major topics of linguistics. This class has affected me because it has increased my knowledge of many of the aspects of language which I previously had little to no knowledge. Origination of language, human language and animals, and second language acquisition are just a few of the major topics I learned about. Some other topics I found interesting and would like to learn more about are the different types of linguistics and how they are used and the experiments done involving teaching animals human language. Overall, this course challenged me and help me gain a better understanding of language and its
The importance is to get an understanding of classes by which I am able to adopt principals in life. Partially this finding made me start doing a lot more research for my individual assignments. I believe that I am now heading into the right direction to use the knowledge I can get from class and from the textbooks effectively. I am also improving in managing my time and activities – which as I had discussed – is the most difficult thing in my life as a student. Because of pursuing my extracurricular passions I had a tendency to procrastinate the tasks given during the courses. I was in a logical fallacy with myself: I decided to not like my assignments for they take too much time before getting to know them. To some extent, however, procrastination had a stimulating effect on me. To quote one of my favourite cartoons, Calvin and Hobbes “Do you have any idea of your story yet? / No, I am waiting for inspiration. You can’t just turn on creativity like a faucet. You have to be in the right mood. / What mood is that? / Last minute panic.” Now this illustrates how I worked for a period of time, before I realised that it won’t pay up in the long run. So I took effort and try to discipline myself to prepare well before my assignments and I hope to be awarded for it. But now, as I reflect on my performance during this semester I see that I am capable of working under
