The purpose of the English 250 course was to help students like myself realize the importance of all aspects of WOVE in their daily lives and future careers. In addition to writing papers, we practiced slideshow presentations, discussion panels, web design, and professional emails. The assignments and in-class activities for English 250 formed me into a skilled communicator in the WOVE areas of visual and oral communication, and I plan to continue practicing these skills through the communication that is necessary for future leadership opportunities. I have improved most in the WOVE area of visual communication this semester. Beginning the course, I did not know the correct way to create a powerpoint presentation that supports the speaker without being a distraction. This semester, I learned that only minimal wording is required on the slides to deliver the main points. The majority of the slideshow can be pictures, charts, or graphs, so long as it remains relevant to the topic. I specifically remember using this new technique for my part of the visual analysis presentation, keeping my bullet points to under five words, if possible. superiors over email. Since electronic communication will continue to be a major part of my life, and hopefully career, it is important that I know how to communicate with my professor or boss. This semester, I learned how to be professional, polite, and clear while communicating over email; I put these skills into practice whenever I had an immediate question for my professor about the English 250 course. I plan to continue improving my communication skills in the future by attaining leadership positions on campus, which will give me more opportunities to communicate in the WOVE areas.
More specifically, I plan on becoming a First-Year Honors Program class leader next fall. This summer, I will send each of my twelve students a written letter introducing myself and explaining how the class will flow. Then, twice a week during the semester, I will conduct group discussions, make announcements to the class, and answer questions; all of which will be valuable oral communication practice. Finally, I will be updating my class on important events through the GroupMe app, a convenient way to communicate electronically to a large
group. This course has sharpened my skills the most as a WOVE communicator in the oral and visual aspects, and I will continue to improve my communication abilities through future leadership positions. Over the span of this semester, the class covered a myriad of forms of communication, leaving very few WOVE aspects untouched. I know that when the time comes to write an email to my superior, present a design to a panel of critics, or hold group discussions in meetings, I will be prepared, because English 250 has placed me on the best track to succeed as a communicator.
During the English 160 course, I improved my approach to writing and developing papers, build on critical reading and grammatical skills, and exceed my previous abilities to write a strong paper as I took into consideration different genre based audiences. If my improvement does not exemplify my determination to learn and prepare for English 161, then I politely request you review my portfolio.
My biggest improvement in this English 111 class was my writing. Writing tasks that were assigned greatly strengthened my overall performance throughout the course, preparing me for the future classes. Before this quarter started I was fairly confident that I had what it took to ace English 101. After the first paper, I realized I was mistaken. Throughout this quarter I have had numerous problems with my writing that proved I needed to do a little more studying to help take my writing to the college level. Although I did not fail any of my papers, there was plenty of room for improvement. All the areas I needed to improve on are all areas that I think every English 101 student should know. I believe that every student at the college level should know how to cite sources correctly, know how to use good transitions, and know how to properly elaborate their examples.

Each of us has a different foundation from which to start, but as we teach this art we will see the minds of our students expand as they develop more interest and take a more active role in their learning. These students will invariably have a richer, more fulfilling life as well as be more productive contributors in our world.
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. My ideas are now more involved because I have learned through English 102 how to develop my writing skills in different formats, for example, in an annotated bibliography and a research paper. I did this by making sure that I added clear pictures, had a legible font, and nice colors to catch their attention. I wanted to make sure that my slides had the right amount words for the students to read. I knew that they would lose interest in my presentation if I added large paragraphs or had too many words to my presentation. I had a total of twelve slides. I read over my slides multiple times to make sure that everything was correct. Finally, the delivery and overall communication while presenting the PowerPoint presentation Brianna maintained eye contact, talked in appropriate volume and rate of speech, and preserved clarity while speaking. The use of media and visual aids were properly used to help maintenance her supporting topics interesting and informative. I did notice Brianna was well-prepared because she had notes to refer to while presenting just in case she had forgotten something.
As you progress throughout the semesters you should improve in the 5 ESLRS Effective Communicator, Intellectually developed Person, Problem Solver, Self-directed Life-Long Learner, and Responsible Community Member. As an individual I have improved my ability as an Effective Communicator, Self-directed Life-long Learner and a Responsible Community Member. The first one that I have improved is being an Effective Communicator. An effective communicator demonstrates purpose and they are aware of the audience when communicating orally and in writing. They employ a variety of Strategies and technologies in order to communicate effectively. In my English class when we did group projects I had to communicate with my group so we could understand our PowerPoint project and what we were doing so we could help each other out and get stuff done for the project. It’s been a long journey for me, but it must end with the cycle beginning anew with you. Throughout this course, the most difficult challenges were dealing with presentation nerves and writing numerous thoughtful essays past midnight. Yet it always felt so rewarding afterward. The applause that came with presenting and feeling as if I wrote something special felt satisfying. Although, I would not recommend procrastinating, because of the abundance of homework. Also, Ms. Goodrum seems to have designed this course around preparing us for the future, not only academically, but to discover who we are as a person as we turn to adults. The books we read such as Frankenstein, Jane Eyre, Hamlet, Beloved, all follow the growth of a character and deals with the theme of independence. In addition, it becomes more apparent at the end when we watched The Dead Poet’s Society and did Show and Tell. The NCSL (2017) Lists seven deadly sins of PowerPoints and include too many effects, uncreative clipart, use of prepackaged templates, and text heavy slides. The power point presentation will be created with simplified slides with a limited number of words per each screen. Slides will limit punctuation and avoid capital letters unless necessary. Upon reflection of the UNIV 100 course, I realize there are three primary areas that I learned that will assist me in attaining my degree. They are: time management; software and online tools; and critical thinking. First, time management must play a part to be successful. During the course of this class, I have had the opportunity to read literature from authors who come from different backgrounds and places in the world. Some of the stories and poetry we read were straight forward while others were confusing and sometimes required a second look. But one thing is clear, it changed the way I think about literature in a few ways that I wasn’t expecting. Three works in particular stand out in my mind. “ I Wont Let You Go” by Rabindranath Tagore, “To New York” by Leopold Senghor, and Pedro Peramo by Juan Rulfo all had an impact on my thinking for similar yet different reasons. They all incorporate their cultural backgrounds into their work through the setting of their pieces. They also compose their pieces in a way that makes you want to research their history to find the deeper meaning. Finally, a couple of the authors write about things they are emotionally connected to. Some of the examples we will look at, really opened my eyes to going beyond a superficial understanding of literature.
