Happy New Year and the second semester of the school year. The first semester was a test on how students would blend into the new academics. Honors English was a great choice I made in middle school and I would recommend it to any incoming freshman. I have learned new ways to create claims and the proper way to set up paragraphs. Learning the way to set up paragraphs has improved my writing skills, even out of the english classroom. English comes in handy in the World Geography classroom as I have learned and may be useful in the future. In Honors English, I have strengthened by writing ethnic over the first semester. I have improved my arguments in essays and have made them sturdier. From the beginning of the year to the Lord of the Flies essay, I have created way better arguments. Also, I have made better claims that are not vague but can be argued about. The improved claims can be shown in the Lord of the Flies essay. One of the biggest weaknesses I have is not being able to transition from paragraphs effectively. In the Lord of the Flies and Asher Lev essays, I did not create a good flow through the essay, making it sort of choppy. I can improve this by increasing my knowledge of transition words and not expanding ideas too much. Also I have to work on slowing down my pace with writing and watch out for grammar mistakes. A way I could improve this is learning the placement of quotations in sentences, that they should be after a period in some cases. Another idea that I have to improve on is choosing the best evidence for my claim. In the Lord of the Flies essay, I had not chose the best evidences and it did not effectively show examples of the claim. I have to learn how to pick evidence that best suits my point of the argument and that I can tie in with my
Use transitions and make connections not only between paragraphs, but among sentences, too. Play with different types of sentence structures (some long, some short, etc.) and more vivid, descriptive word choice to make the essay engaging to the reader.
Over my career of schooling my writing has changed dramatically at times and very little at others. Through my years of schooling people have determined my main weaknesses and strengths that I should work on with my writing. My biggest weakness is writing introductions and conclusions they must be so complicated and require so much thought to be defined as good. I excel at writing body paragraphs and explaining all the facts that back up your main ideas though.
I know I was never good at writing in English, but attending this class I have learn how edit and organize my own work. Also, I have a better understanding of how to express linguistic diversity while still communicating clearly and effectively with a chosen audience. In my fourth project, it shows my improvement in grammar and organization. I learned how to conduct research for a paper, make a claim, and form a counter argument. For example in my fourth paper, I collected five research documents to support my paper. I annotated and highlighted main reasons in each documents. My claim had been redrafted several times with my peers. I valued the times with my peers and the thoughtful suggestion about my paper. More importantly, my writing skill improved significantly. Even though I still make mistakes in my papers, I believe that I am qualified to move on to English
One strength I had was the organization of the essay. My sentences I wrote were not all over the place each paragraph talks about one topic. One weakness I had with writing this essay was my writing style. I noticed that in this essay my writing style was a bit choppy. I should have read my essay out loud to see if it had a good flow between my ideas.
As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned many new things that have improved my abilities as a writer. I have learned some new techniques that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved writing skills are shown within each essay.
Freshman year is where the foundation of a long lasting education begins. With english as a core class, the subjects we’ve covered have given a great base to build off of, especially as honors students. However, things weren’t always easy: critical thinking and extra effort was needed to accommodate for challenging concepts. Through it all we prevailed and have learned a multitude of new topics. This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
In summary, I had an enjoyable time in my first college English class. I pushed myself as diligently as I could and learned much more than I thought I would. In addition to, my strengths grew stronger and my weaknesses improved as well. I acknowledge I still have some techniques and skills to work on; however, I am willing to put the time in and cannot wait to take English in the future. Throughout the semester, I’ve written several essays and other writing assignments that demonstrate competent writing in all three student learning outcomes of English 1. According to my portfolio, I am excellent in the first learning outcome, which is content, argument, and insights of this portfolio. Furthermore, I show competence in the second learning outcome which is the development, evidence, and organization of my writing. I am also competent in the third learning outcome which is the grammar, mechanics, as well as the formatting of my writing. Overall, I am competent in all the student learning outcomes of this course because my portfolio is composed of two well thought out argumentative essays which incorporate adequate credible evidence to support my stance on a subject. I also show competence in grammar and mechanics because I made sure to proofread my paragraphs However, I struggled quite a bit with these, but I managed to correct my errors after proofreading. I am also competent at properly formatting my essays as I correctly cite and reference evidence in my works cited page.
Some of my terrible essays were, To Kill a Mockingbird and Characteristics of Brother, First, I will explain my weaknesses when it comes to writing essays, then my strengths, and my growth as a writer this year. Weaknesses make my writing confusing or unclear. One of my weaknesses is the ideas and content. When I look at my rubric, I realized most of the time my ideas and content is the lowest out of all the other ones.
but I would have no clue on they mean in an essay. Another weakness of mine was that I did not use any transition words or phrases and If I did I did not even notice it. My abilities at the beginning of the semester were very simple, that were based on the material that I have taken in the bridge program and writing 101. They were mainly about the skills on how to start an academic essay. One of the challenges that I faced at the beginning of the semester was the fact that last essay I wrote was a year ago (fall 2015). Another issue was when I faced an argumentative essay I realized that my brainstorming were good, but I lacked in delivering it to build up my draft. To illustrate, choosing the topic (postmodern architecture) was not a problem, however, due to the fact that the topic was too narrow and I didn’t have enough background about it. To find a way to support my ideas I have done a lot of researches.
By writing multiple memos and assignments this semester, I was able to grow accustomed to the strengths and weaknesses of my writing. Some of these I realized on my own but others were realized through the comments of others. Strengths One of my strong writing skills is my ability to complete all parts of the assignment. To ensure that I have not missed any requirements, I create an outline for all of my assignments.
At the start of the semester, I struggled mostly with using summarizations of the book as evidence, rather than elaborating on my own ideas. My second paper, for example, can be considered more of a summary of the book Frankenstein, rather than an argumentative essay on the dangers of the acquisition of knowledge. By the third paper, I was aware of my struggle with summarizing the text, rather than arguing my point, so I did a better job at making an argument. Along with starting off the semester by mainly summarizing the text, I struggled with using topic sentences. In my second paper, my paragraphs had no definite beginning and ending sentences; they were simply continuations of the following paragraph. My third and fourth essays had stronger topic and conclusion sentences, allowing me to stick more closely with my thesis, rather than drifting away from what was asked. Though I feel that I could greatly improve in providing evidence and having stronger topic sentences, I believe that I have greatly improved throughout this semester. I had started this semester very weak in my abilities of elaborating on a topic and providing strong topic and conclusion sentences, and though I still have more room to develop these skills, I have become a stronger writer after developing these
