“Hidden Talents” by David Lubar is about kids who have powers. Some of those powers include telepathy, finding lost objects, and the power to light fire. One of the themes in the book “Hidden Talents” is powers can be a bad thing when you don't know how to use them. The second theme from the book “Hidden Talents” is do not judge people on who the are right now, judge people on who you think the can become. The first theme is shown when the powers have flaws to them. The second theme is shown when people decide to put away other people's differences. The first theme is shown in the beginning when they don’t know how to control their powers, and at the end when the powers show their flaws. Powers really can be a bad thing sometimes and many don't realise that. Some powers can cause you to get in trouble. ”Phillip, if you keep denying you have a problem you'll never make any progress. ”This was because Phillip looked like he was lying when he wasn't. Phillips powers are really what started the fire not the lighters in his pockets. ”(55) Lost objects, mostly. sometimes hidden things too. They whisper to me.if i pick them up,the voices stop. if I dont, they get louder,”(175)This has shown that although powers may be great but sometimes they can cause issues. It causes trouble internally because the voices will yell at him if he ignores them. These show that powers really aren't all that they are worked up to be. The second theme is also shown throughout the book .Many people throughout the book have learned or need to learn not to judge people on who they are.
Many of these people need to learn to judge people on who they can be.”(84) Kids in the streets got quiet when we went past.” This is an example of someone who need to learn that just because someone is like something now they won’t be like that later in life.” Maybe adults are wrong about you.” (107)This shows that even teachers can set aside differences and look beyond where they are at that point. These quotes show many people have or will need to learn how to not judge people on who the are right now, but judge people on who you think the can
become. The author David Lubar is and amazing writer. Lubar also has an amazing mindset. One of lubars many skills is he is amazing at creating an image in peoples heads. Lubar also can really make the reader feel the pain and or suffering of the students who have been sent away to the alternative school. These are some of the many ways Lubar shows his creativeness. This shows Lubar is a very creative and talented writer. In conclusion,The two themes are shown in his book “Hidden Talents”. One of these themes being powers can be a bad thing when you don't know how to use them. The second theme being do not judge people on who the are right now, judge people on who you think the can become. Many of the characters learned not to judge their friends on who they are but on what they think they can be. The students also learned that their powers are harder to control and deal with then they think. Many of the characters have improved at edgewood alternative school and that is because they learned how to handle and take care of themselves.
1) The story takes place in Pinedale, Florida. Where a HIV-positive Pinedale High School student named Alejandro Crusan or Alex for short, was attacked while in his car. A witness named Daria Bickell says that she was a student from the same school, name Clinton Cole at the crime scene.
In the short story “Sucker,” Carson McCullers conveys the message about how a loss of innocence can change not only one’s behavior, but also one’s relationships with others. This message is shown in the story through Carson’s portrayal of Pete and Sucker’s relationship. Throughout the beginning, Pete, the narrator, has been depicted as a role model to Sucker, his younger cousin. However, Sucker has no idea about how Pete views him. At one point, Pete realizes that in his relationship with Sucker, “the funny thing was that no matter how many times he got fooled he would still believe me. Not that he was dumb in other ways…”(26). Carson reveals the innocence of Sucker through this description; words such as “fooled” and “dumb” are used to describe someone who is clueless and thoughtless. This
In Ain’t No Making It, Jay Macleod explains his theories and findings on social reproduction of inequality. He begins by telling us more about some authors and their theories. This helped me have a better understanding on what this book is really trying to portray. One author I found interesting was Bernstein who focused on language patterns and social reproduction. By bringing up issues like this one that most people usually don’t think about, I was able to look at the problems that the Brothers and Hallway Hangers faced from a whole new perspective. I would not have noticed this throughout the book if these issues were not mentioned right away. I come from a very traditional family that believes that success depends on how much work you
“Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”
In Daniel Coyle’s, The Talent Code he studies talent and tries to explain how people become talented by going to several “talent hotspots”(12). In the chapter, “The Sweet Spot”, Coyle explains that people who struggle to do something “increase their learning velocity” (5-16). By struggling to do something you are more likely to learn faster. Coyle calls this method of training “deep practice” (16). Coyle tries to explain this deep practice by giving many examples of people who have unknowingly used this method before. For example, Coyle visited Brazilian soccer players to learn about how they became talented playing soccer. He finds out that they play a unique Minigame called futebol de Salao which is like soccer, but in a confined area where
Children grow up with the ideas that the child’s parents influence on them. this may sometimes led to a misunderstanding. In To Kill a Mockingbird Scout and Jem also have misunderstandings. Atticus, Scout and Jem’s father, has taught and educated them well, but people like Cecil Jacobs don’t understand what Atticus is doing for Tom. In the world people have been taught to judge someone who is different. Racism is very common, and people are judged by religion, sexuality and skin
The first quote I have chose is a quote by Aarnold Nicolson, “We are all inclined to judge ourselves by our ideas; others by their acts.” Nicolson bluntly stated the truth. We know our stories and our past experiences. We know every reason behind every action we perform, and the emotions behind the reason. Whereas with others we tend to only see the action performed. My personal experience with this has to do with my siblings. I have a younger brother and a younger sister. I’ve always seen them act quite childish, and I often get irritated by their
Those that write are usually also able read. These two skills are tied together very closely, as one without the other can never stand long under any amount of true scrutiny. History is told by those that can write, then, directed towards those that can read. It only makes sense, following this rather obvious train of thought, that when a beaten down people wish to preserve their struggling voices for a following group to hear, they write about them so they can be heard. As the many different written voices of a trampled Asian American community can attest to, there was quite a bit of struggling going on and quite a bit of power put into written words. The multitude of poems etched into the very walls of Angel Island, the immigration detention center in the San Fransisco Bay, highlight just how powerful written words can be in the ability to capture moments in history. In addition, the optimistic and yet depressing “The Real Me” by Viet Mike Ngo also brings to the light how without these writings the memories themselves of the many struggles would
As you can see, many people live by this quote. Don't let go of who you want to be just because someone else doesn't approve. How you live your life is not up to anyone but yourself. All that matters is that you are happy, because you’re going to be the one who is living your life. Be who you choose to

Shortcomings in society lead to instances of discrimination, prejudice, and coerciveness. Barbara Jordan says that, “We as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves."
"Don't mind criticism. If it is untrue, disregard it. If it is unfair, keep from irritation. It if is ignorant, smile. If it is justified, learn from it."
...what we want to be when we grow up. We never thought of how hard it would be to be accepted by one another. Sometimes you may not like someone, but they may help you reach the top. When we see people with less, it is hard not to help them because you feel responsible. Some people may seem nice and innocent, but everyone has a part in peer cruelty. No one is innocent of bullying. Some people may say that adolescence is about fitting in, but if you try to be your own person, then some people may except you and others may not.
These lessons and traits I have taught myself, have helped me become a better person with a dependable future. Forgive all who wrong you, love your family and friends, but love your enemies more. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Remember that obtaining perfection is impossible in your life on earth and remember that you show who you are through your actions, not what you look like. Be grateful of your current state; you are alive and can change the world and all who inhabit it through your actions and words. Help, give, and pray for the less fortunate. “If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.”-Jesus Christ.
